Is a board foot the same as a linear foot?
No. A linear foot measures length only. A board foot measures volume. A 10-foot-long board can contain many different board-foot amounts depending on thickness and width. For example, a 1 by 6 by 10 foot board has fewer board feet than a 2 by 12 by 10 foot board. The calculator uses thickness, width, length, and quantity because board-foot pricing reflects lumber volume, not just length.
Why does the formula divide by 12?
