Why does the calculator use drywall area instead of seam length?
Drywall area is easier for most users because board takeoff tools and room measurements already produce square footage. Manufacturer guidance often expresses practical joint compound coverage in square feet of gypsum wallboard. A seam-length model can be more precise for professional estimators, but it requires board layout, orientation, opening placement, corner count, bead count, and finish level. The calculator should use area for the base workflow and allow future advanced seam inputs if Quanta expands the tool. That keeps the first release usable without hiding the estimating assumption.
Does a Level 5 finish need more mud?
Usually yes. GA-214 defines a skim coat as a thin coat of joint compound or a material manufactured for that purpose applied over the entire surface.
