Background.

Universal Transverse Mercator, or UTM, turns a WGS 84 latitude and longitude into metric grid coordinates. Instead of angular degrees, a UTM position has an easting, a northing, a numbered six-degree-wide zone and a hemisphere. That makes local distance and layout work more convenient, provided every point is in the same appropriate zone and the datum is known.

This calculator works in both directions. Forward mode accepts WGS 84 decimal latitude and longitude, chooses the standard UTM zone—including the Norway and Svalbard exceptions—and returns metres. Reverse mode accepts zone, hemisphere, easting and northing and recovers WGS 84 decimal degrees.

The datum label is not optional. WGS 84 defines the ellipsoid used here: semi-major axis 6,378,137 metres and inverse flattening 298.257223563. Coordinates from Arc 1960, NAD27 or another datum can use similar-looking latitude and longitude while identifying a different physical point. This page never silently transforms a foreign datum.

UTM divides most of the world between 80°S and 84°N into zones 1 through 60. Each ordinary zone spans six degrees of longitude and has a central meridian. The transverse-Mercator projection is scaled by 0.9996 along that meridian, then shifted by a false easting of 500,000 metres so normal eastings remain positive. Southern coordinates add a false northing of 10,000,000 metres.

At the equator on a zone's central meridian, the construction is easy to inspect. Longitude 3°E is the central meridian of zone 31, so latitude 0°, longitude 3°E becomes exactly 31N, 500,000 m E, 0 m N. Its WGS 84 projected coordinate reference system is EPSG:32631. Southern WGS 84 UTM codes use 32700 plus the zone instead.

The projection uses a transverse-Mercator series derived from the Krüger method. Decimal.js runs with fifty significant digits, and easting, northing and recovered angles round only once at the output boundary. Forward and inverse tests cover both hemispheres, four continents and the special northern zones.

A numerical round trip does not certify survey accuracy. Source GPS uncertainty, antenna setup, epoch, datum realisation and local control can dominate the displayed millimetres. The page formats a compact UTM string to three decimals for readability, but the extra digits are calculation output, not evidence about the field measurement.

UTM is not defined for the polar caps. Locations north of 84°N or south of 80°S use Universal Polar Stereographic instead and are rejected here. Points near a zone boundary also need care: coordinates from adjacent zones cannot be subtracted as though they shared one Cartesian grid.

This is not an MGRS converter. MGRS adds latitude bands, 100 km grid letters and precision digits on top of UTM/UPS. It is also not a geodetic datum transformer. Use it only when the source or target is explicitly WGS 84 / UTM and retain the zone and hemisphere with every easting and northing.

What is latitude/longitude to utm calculator?

UTM is a zoned transverse-Mercator projection. It represents a WGS 84 geographic point as metre-based easting and northing coordinates within one of sixty longitude zones, plus a northern or southern hemisphere. The false coordinates keep normal values positive, while the zone confines projection distortion.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Confirm that the geographic or projected coordinates are WGS 84.
  2. Choose the forward or reverse conversion direction.
  3. For forward mode, enter latitude from 80°S to 84°N and longitude from −180° to 180°.
  4. For reverse mode, enter the full zone, hemisphere, easting and northing together.
  5. Keep zone and hemisphere attached to the result and do not mix neighbouring-zone coordinates in planar arithmetic.

The formula.

UTM = transverseMercator(WGS84, k₀=0.9996) + false coordinates

The standard zone determines a central meridian at zone×6−183 degrees. The Krüger/Snyder series evaluates meridional arc and transverse terms from the WGS 84 eccentricity, latitude and longitude offset. Easting receives 500,000 metres; southern northing receives ten million metres. The inverse removes those offsets, recovers footpoint latitude, then evaluates the inverse series.

For 0°, 3°E, zone=floor((3+180)/6)+1=31 and the central meridian is 3°. The longitude offset is zero, so every transverse term vanishes: easting is exactly 500,000 m and northing is zero. Reverse mode returns the starting angles. Values are held in fifty-digit Decimal arithmetic and rounded once to ten decimals.

A worked example.

Example

At the equator and 3°E, the standard zone is 31 and 3°E is its central meridian. With no transverse offset, the result is exactly 31N 500000.000 E 0.000 N and EPSG:32631. Reversing those UTM fields returns latitude 0° and longitude 3°.
