What the size cannot capture is hand shape. The size from hand length is a nearest-neighbour lookup against the standard's tabulated lengths — 160 mm for size 6, 171 for 7, 182 for 8, 192 for 9, 204 for 10 and 215 for 11 — with ties resolving upward to the larger glove, because being marginally roomy is a better failure than being short in the fingers. The midpoints are therefore 165.5, 176.5, 187, 198 and 209.5 mm, and each is tested at, below and above. Outside 160 to 215 mm the standard's own column is open-ended: sizes 4 and 5 share "under 160 mm" and sizes 12 and 13 share "over 215 mm", so the lookup returns the boundary size and the page states plainly that length alone cannot resolve it.

When the basis is "both", the reported size is the maximum of the two estimates. This is a deliberate asymmetry rather than an average: a palm circumference that is slightly generous leaves a glove a little loose across the back of the hand, which is tolerable, whereas a finger box that is too short is not wearable at all. Both per-dimension figures are always reported whichever basis governs, so the choice is visible rather than hidden.

A worked example.

Example

Someone measures 21.5 cm round the palm at the knuckles and 19.5 cm from wrist crease to middle-fingertip, and wants the safe answer for a pair of work gloves. Converted to the standard's unit those are 215 mm and 195 mm. The circumference gives 215 ÷ 25.4 = 8.46, which rounds to a size 8. The hand length is 3 mm from the 192 mm tabulated for a size 9 and 9 mm from the 204 mm tabulated for a size 10, so on length alone it is a size 9. The two dimensions genuinely disagree — this is a hand that is long for its width — and because the basis is set to "both", the calculator takes the larger: size 9, letter L.
