The Wallpaper Calculator estimates how many rolls are needed to cover a set of walls, accounting for wall dimensions, roll width, roll length, openings, waste, and pattern repeat. The canonical use case is a homeowner or decorator who knows the room perimeter and ceiling height but does not know whether the area printed on a roll label is enough. Wallpaper is not paint. It is cut into vertical drops, and each drop must be long enough to cover the wall from top to bottom. If the pattern repeats, additional length may be lost so motifs align from panel to panel.
Search demand is strong because the arithmetic is surprisingly easy to get wrong. A room with 348 square feet of net wall area may appear to need only seven rolls if each roll covers around 56 square feet. But a 21 inch pattern repeat can reduce usable drops per roll and push the actual purchase to 10 rolls. That difference is not a minor rounding issue; it changes cost and can create a serious dye-lot problem if the user runs out and later buys rolls printed in a different batch. A calculator that explains panel count is more useful than one that divides area by nominal roll coverage.
Wallpaper estimating has a long connection to manufacturing standards. Modern wallcoverings are classified by material, washability, colorfastness, flame spread, and installation performance. ASTM F793, for example, covers classification of wallcovering by use and physical characteristics. Installation instructions from manufacturers such as Maharam explain the importance of checking rolls, matching patterns, planning seams, and allowing for trimming. Those technical realities are the reason the calculator asks for roll width, roll length, and pattern repeat rather than only wall area.
The calculator's algorithm follows the way an installer thinks. First, total wall width determines how many vertical panels are needed. Second, wall height and pattern repeat determine how long each panel must be cut. Third, roll length determines how many complete panels can be cut from one roll. Finally, the calculator rounds up to whole rolls and applies any user-selected waste allowance. Openings such as doors and windows are still recorded because net area is useful for comparison, but panel count remains the primary purchasing method.
This distinction matters most for large repeats and short rolls. A no-repeat grasscloth on a 33 foot roll and 8 foot wall can often produce four drops per roll. Add a 21 inch repeat and the adjusted drop becomes 8.75 feet, reducing production to three drops per roll. That single drop lost per roll can increase the order quantity by 25 to 35 percent. The calculator makes that loss visible and gives engineering a deterministic testable model.
It also helps users compare installer quotes. A decorator who prices from panel count may look more expensive than an area-only estimate, but the panel method is usually the one that survives contact with pattern matching, trimming, damaged drops, and roll-end waste. By showing gross area, net area, drop length, panels per roll, and final rolls together, the calculator explains where the extra material goes and why a same-lot order matters for color consistency.
What is wallpaper calculator?
A wallpaper calculator is a roll estimator for wallcoverings. It converts a wall layout into the number of vertical drops required, then determines how many drops can be cut from each roll. The most important vocabulary is roll width, roll length, drop, and pattern repeat. Roll width is the horizontal coverage of one panel. Roll length is the total material length wound on one roll. A drop is one vertical strip from ceiling line to base line. Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before a printed motif repeats.
Units can be mixed in real life. Roll width is often listed in inches or centimetres, roll length in feet or metres, and wall dimensions in feet. The calculator normalizes dimensions before computing. A square-foot area output is included because users expect it, but area alone cannot answer the roll question when repeats are involved.
The calculator is valid for straight vertical wallpaper installation on flat walls. It does not handle murals printed to fixed panels, ceilings, stairwells, sloped walls, fabric railroaded horizontally, or commercial installations that require a full seam map. It also assumes all rolls come from the same pattern and lot and that the user can order whole rolls.
How to use this calculator.
- Measure the width of each wall that will receive wallpaper and add the widths together.
- Enter wall height from finished floor or baseboard to the top cut line.
- Enter roll width and roll length from the manufacturer's label.
- Enter the vertical pattern repeat; use zero for plain or random-match wallcovering.
- Enter large door and window openings if you want the net wall area for reference.
- Add a waste allowance for complex layouts, damaged strips, or future repair stock.
- Buy the rounded whole-roll quantity from a single lot whenever possible.
The formula.
The formula prioritizes vertical drops because wallpaper is installed as strips. Total wall width divided by roll width gives the number of strips needed around the room. This value is rounded up because the last wall segment needs a full strip even when it is narrower than the roll. For example, 48 feet of wall width divided by a 20.5 inch roll width yields 28.097561 panels, so 29 panels are required.
The next step is drop length. With no pattern repeat, drop length equals wall height plus whatever trim margin the user includes. In this specification, trim margin is absorbed into waste or can be added to wall height. With a pattern repeat, each drop must be cut to a length that is an integer multiple of the repeat and at least as long as the wall. This is why the formula uses ceil(wallHeight / repeat) * repeat. An 8 foot wall and a 21 inch repeat produce a repeat length of 1.75 feet. Eight divided by 1.75 is 4.571429, which rounds to 5 repeats. Five repeats equals 8.75 feet per drop.
Panels per roll is floor(rollLength / adjustedDrop). The floor operation is essential because leftover roll length shorter than a full adjusted drop cannot cover a wall panel. A 33 foot roll divided by 8.75 foot drops yields 3.771429, but only 3 complete panels can be cut. The base roll count is then ceil(panelsNeeded / panelsPerRoll). A project needing 29 panels at 3 panels per roll needs 10 rolls.
Opening area is included for reporting but not used to reduce panel count in the basic model. A door removes wall area, but it may not remove an entire vertical drop if wallpaper must be cut around the opening. Advanced implementations can subtract full-width openings from panels, but a conservative consumer estimator should not assume every opening saves material. The final waste multiplier gives users a controlled way to adjust for site complexity.
A worked example.
Take a room with 48 feet of total wall width and 8 foot walls. The selected wallpaper roll is 20.5 inches wide and 33 feet long, with a 21 inch vertical repeat. The calculator first reports gross wall area as 48 times 8, or 384 square feet. After subtracting 36 square feet of doors and windows, net wall area is 348 square feet. For roll estimating, however, panel count matters more. A 20.5 inch roll is 1.708333 feet wide, so 48 divided by 1.708333 equals 28.097561 panels. Rounding up gives 29 panels. The 21 inch repeat is 1.75 feet. An 8 foot wall needs the next whole repeat length, so each drop is 8.75 feet. A 33 foot roll can provide floor(33 / 8.75) = 3 full drops. With 29 panels required and 3 panels per roll, the project needs 10 rolls. At 58 dollars per roll, the material cost is 580 dollars.
