Each fixture's daily gallons are computed the same way: multiply household size by a frequency (or duration) term and by a flow rate or flush volume. Shower use multiplies occupants by showers per person per day, by average shower minutes, by the showerhead's gallons-per-minute rating — three independent multiplications chained together, since gallons scale with each of frequency, duration, and flow rate simultaneously. Toilet use is simpler because a flush's volume does not depend on duration: occupants times flushes per person per day times gallons per flush. Faucet use mirrors the shower calculation, using minutes of run-time instead of a fixed per-use volume, since faucets (unlike toilets) are a continuously-flowing fixture like a showerhead.

The three fixture totals are added together along with a flat 'other' allowance covering fixtures this calculator does not model per-cycle — dishwashers and clothes washers use a fixed volume per cycle rather than a simple flow-rate-times-duration relationship, and modeling them properly would require cycle counts and appliance-specific water-factor ratings that fall outside this calculator's fixture-flow-rate scope. The result is a single daily-gallons figure, which is then scaled by 30 for a monthly estimate and 365 for an annual estimate — plain multiplication, not a calendar-aware day count, since the goal is a representative planning figure rather than a specific billing-cycle reconciliation.

Cost conversion divides each gallons figure by 1,000 and multiplies by the entered rate per 1,000 gallons, mirroring how many US water utilities structure their per-unit pricing (some bill instead per CCF, where one CCF equals 748 gallons — if your bill uses CCF, divide your rate by 0.748 to convert it to a per-1,000-gallon figure before entering it here). Because every input in this formula is non-negative and every operation is either multiplication, addition, or division by a positive constant, every output stays a finite, well-defined number for any valid combination of inputs — there is no division by a variable that could reach zero, and no branching logic that could produce an undefined case.

A worked example.

Example

A household of three has standard, federal-maximum fixtures: a 2.5 gpm showerhead, a 1.6 gpf toilet, and 2.2 gpm faucets. Each person showers once a day for 8 minutes, flushes about 5 times a day, and runs the faucet about 4 minutes a day. Shower use is 3 × 1 × 8 × 2.5 = 60 gallons per day. Toilet use is 3 × 5 × 1.6 = 24 gallons per day. Faucet use is 3 × 4 × 2.2 = 26.4 gallons per day. Adding a flat 20 gallons per day for the dishwasher, clothes washer, and other use gives a total of 60 + 24 + 26.4 + 20 = 130.4 gallons per day. Scaled up, that is 3,912 gallons a month and 47,596 gallons a year. At a combined water-and-sewer rate of $3.00 per 1,000 gallons, the estimated cost is about $0.39 a day, $11.74 a month, and $142.79 a year. Swapping in WaterSense-labeled fixtures (2.0 gpm shower, 1.28 gpf toilet, 1.5 gpm faucets) drops the monthly total to roughly $9.47 — a concrete, fixture-driven savings estimate the household can weigh against the cost of upgrading.
