The conversion is the most common piece of compensation math in American working life because the same income gets expressed in six different units depending on who is asking. Recruiters quote annual salary in offer letters. Hourly workers see a rate on their pay stubs. The IRS reports box-1 wages annually. Mortgage underwriters underwrite against gross monthly income. Freelancers price work by the hour but plan revenue by the year. Each conversion looks trivial in isolation but routinely produces six-figure errors when the wrong divisor is used — most notoriously the biweekly-versus-semimonthly mix-up, in which the same nominal paycheck is divided into 24 periods (semimonthly, twice a month) versus 26 periods (biweekly, every two weeks), a difference of about 8.3% over a full year.
The calculator runs the standard US payroll-industry conversions exactly as they appear in IRS Publication 15 (Circular E) and the Department of Labor's Fair Labor Standards Act regulations. The foundational identity is the 2,080-hour work year: 40 hours per week multiplied by 52 weeks gives 2,080, which is why a $100,000 annual salary works out to almost exactly $48.08 per hour, and why a $25-per-hour wage works out to exactly $52,000 per year. The 2,080 number is the basis for federal General Schedule pay tables, military E-grade pay conversions, contractor rate negotiations, and the hourly-equivalent disclosures employers make under state pay-transparency laws including California Senate Bill 1162 and New York's Labor Law 194-b. The biweekly-versus-semimonthly distinction is worth pausing on because it is the single most common conversion error in US payroll and the question that triggers the most calls to HR departments every January. Biweekly means every two weeks — typically every other Friday — which produces 26 paychecks per year (52 weeks ÷ 2). Semimonthly means twice a month, usually the 1st and 15th, which produces exactly 24 paychecks per year (12 months × 2). The two cadences land on the same dates only a handful of times per year, and two calendar months per year contain three biweekly checks rather than two, which is why biweekly employees experience two 'extra-paycheck' months annually and semimonthly employees do not. A $60,000 salary paid biweekly produces a $2,307.69 paycheck; the same $60,000 paid semimonthly produces a $2,500.00 paycheck. The annual gross is identical — only the slicing differs.
The weeksPerYear input matters more than most users realize, and gets the most pushback from freelancers and 1099 contractors. A W-2 employee on a 52-week salary is paid for all 52 weeks including paid time off, federal holidays, and sick leave — the salary covers the calendar year regardless of how many hours the desk chair is occupied. For that employee the 52-week assumption is correct. A self-employed consultant, freelance designer, or contract software engineer billing hourly is in a fundamentally different position. They are not paid for the two-week vacation, the ten federal holidays, the week of flu, the unpaid time spent on bookkeeping, marketing, prospecting, and unbillable client calls, or the gap weeks between engagements. Realistic billable utilization for a senior freelancer typically lands at 46 to 48 weeks per year and a 30-to-35-hour billable week — even when nominal 'work weeks' are 50-plus hours. The implication is direct: a freelancer who wants to clear a $100,000 W-2-equivalent income needs to charge meaningfully more per hour than the naive $100,000 ÷ 2,080 = $48 figure suggests. Plugging 35 hours × 47 weeks (1,645 billable hours) into the calculator instead returns an hourly rate of $60.79 to land the same gross — a 26% premium that covers the unpaid time the W-2 salary silently absorbs, before any adjustment for self-employment tax (15.3%), health insurance premiums no longer subsidized by an employer, or the absence of an employer-matched 401(k).

What is annual salary calculator?
Annual salary is the total gross compensation an employee earns in one calendar year, before federal income tax withholding (computed under IRS Publication 15 wage-bracket or percentage methods), state income tax, FICA payroll taxes (6.2% Social Security on wages up to the 2025 Social Security wage base of $176,100, plus 1.45% Medicare on all wages, plus the Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% on wages above $200,000 for single filers), benefit deductions, and retirement-plan deferrals. In US payroll the annual figure is the primary contracting unit — the number on an offer letter, the basis for W-2 box 1 (with deferrals added back), and the line item the IRS uses for income-bracket lookup in Form 1040. Other pay frequencies are derived from the annual figure by standard divisors codified in IRS Publication 15 and Department of Labor regulations under the Fair Labor Standards Act: 12 for monthly pay, 24 for semimonthly pay (twice a month, typically the 1st and 15th), 26 for biweekly pay (every two weeks), and 52 for weekly pay. - Adjust weeks worked per year for unpaid time off or freelance utilization. Default 52 covers all calendar weeks including paid vacation and holidays — correct for salaried W-2 employees. Use 50 if you take 2 weeks of unpaid leave annually. Freelancers and independent contractors should use 46–48 to account for unpaid vacation, sick time, prospecting, and the gap weeks between engagements.
- Read the six output rows. The primary output is annual salary; secondary outputs give the equivalent hourly, weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly figures using IRS Publication 15 standard period counts. These are gross numbers — for after-tax pay, run the result through the federal income tax calculator.
- Sensitivity-test the result if you are negotiating. Re-run with hoursPerWeek = 45 or 50 to see what a 'salary' role implies as an effective hourly rate. Re-run with weeksPerYear = 46 to model freelance utilization. The formula.
All conversions route through a single intermediate quantity — annual gross pay — and then redistribute it across the standard US payroll period counts. The forward path from input to annual depends on the selected frequency. For hourly input, annual = inputAmount × hoursPerWeek × weeksPerYear; at the defaults of 40 hours × 52 weeks this is inputAmount × 2,080, which is why a $25/hr wage equals exactly $52,000 per year. For weekly input, annual = inputAmount × weeksPerYear, defaulting to inputAmount × 52. For biweekly input, annual = inputAmount × 26 — there are exactly 26 biweekly periods in a year because 52 weeks divided by 2 equals 26, and this is non-negotiable regardless of calendar quirks (the 'three-paycheck months' simply mean that biweekly periods do not align evenly with calendar months, not that the period count changes). For semimonthly input, annual = inputAmount × 24, because two pay dates per month times twelve months equals 24 paychecks per year, again independent of the calendar. For monthly input, annual = inputAmount × 12. For annual input the conversion is the identity — annual = inputAmount. Once annual gross is known, the reverse split distributes it back across every period: hourly = annual ÷ (hoursPerWeek × weeksPerYear) — the canonical 2,080 divisor at full-time defaults; weekly = annual ÷ weeksPerYear; biweekly = annual ÷ 26; semimonthly = annual ÷ 24; monthly = annual ÷ 12. The two structurally interesting facts the math surfaces. First, biweekly and semimonthly paychecks for the same annual salary differ by the ratio 26/24 = 1.0833, so a biweekly paycheck is approximately 7.7% smaller than the semimonthly equivalent ((24 − 26)/26 = −7.69%) while the annual total is identical — the same money is just sliced into more pieces. Second, the hourly-to-annual identity hourly × 2,080 = annual is the convention that makes US labor economics arithmetic clean: BLS Occupational Employment Statistics reports both median hourly and median annual wages computed against this exact 2,080 reference, and the federal General Schedule pay tables under 5 CFR § 550.103 use 2,087 hours per year (a slight refinement that averages the 28-year cycle of leap years and weekday distributions) — most private-sector payroll uses the rounder 2,080. The calculator uses 2,080 by default but honors user overrides of hoursPerWeek and weeksPerYear for non-standard schedules. All arithmetic is performed in full Decimal precision via the decimal.js library — there is no floating-point error to worry about even when dividing a $1,000,000 salary by 26 biweekly periods — with rounding to display precision only at the output layer.
A worked example.
Consider a worker earning $25 per hour at a standard US full-time schedule of 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year — the canonical example used in every introductory payroll textbook. The annual conversion runs $25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000 of gross pay per year. Distributing that annual figure back across the standard pay frequencies gives $52,000 ÷ 52 = $1,000.00 per week, $52,000 ÷ 26 = $2,000.00 every two weeks (biweekly), $52,000 ÷ 24 ≈ $2,166.67 twice a month (semimonthly), and $52,000 ÷ 12 ≈ $4,333.33 per month. The hourly identity comes back exactly: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00. Note the biweekly-versus-semimonthly difference the example surfaces — the semimonthly paycheck is about $166.67 larger than the biweekly paycheck for the same annual salary, because the same money is divided into 24 pieces instead of 26. The annual total is identical: $2,000 × 26 = $52,000 and $2,166.67 × 24 = $52,000. The example also illustrates why $52,000 has become an informal US benchmark — it is the year-equivalent of a $25/hr wage, which itself sits roughly at the median private-sector hourly wage reported in BLS Current Employment Statistics through 2024–2025. A freelancer wanting to clear the same $52,000 gross but realistically billing 35 hours per week for 47 weeks per year (allowing for vacation, holidays, sick days, and admin time) would need to charge $52,000 ÷ (35 × 47) = $52,000 ÷ 1,645 ≈ $31.61 per hour — a 26% premium over the W-2 rate to cover the unpaid weeks the salaried equivalent absorbs silently.
