Background.

Coffee cups are poor units for caffeine. A small home filter coffee, a large café drink, an espresso and a cold brew can contain very different amounts even when people call each of them “one coffee.” This calculator starts with the number that matters: milligrams per serving from the product label, café nutrition page, manufacturer or a measured database entry. It multiplies that value by servings, adds caffeine from every other source, and shows the daily total.

The default 90 mg is an example, not a promise about a cup in front of you. The European Food Safety Authority lists about 90 mg for a 200 mL filter coffee, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gives a much wider 113–247 mg range for a typical 12-fluid-ounce regular brewed non-specialty coffee. Bean species, dose, grind, extraction, serving size and recipe all matter. Replace the default whenever a better product-specific figure is available.

The comparison uses 400 mg per day because both FDA and EFSA cite that amount for most or general healthy adults. Their wording is important: FDA calls it an amount not generally associated with negative effects, and EFSA says intake up to that amount throughout the day does not raise safety concerns for the general healthy adult population except pregnant women. The result therefore calls 400 mg a reference, not a personal safe limit, recommendation or target.

Individual sensitivity varies. FDA identifies body weight, medications, medical conditions and personal sensitivity as relevant, and advises people who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or breastfeeding to ask a health professional whether they need to limit caffeine. EFSA separately discusses 200 mg per day during pregnancy and lactation. This general-adult calculator does not switch standards based on personal health information and should not be used to override individualized advice.

Add all sources, not just coffee. Tea, cola, energy drinks, chocolate, supplements and some medicines can contribute. FDA also notes that decaffeinated coffee is not necessarily caffeine-free. If a label gives caffeine for an entire container but the serving field represents a cup, convert the label first so the units match. Conversely, if one “serving” in the calculator means the full bottle, use the milligrams for the full bottle.

The “difference below reference” stops at zero once the total reaches 400 mg. It is not an allowance or a suggestion to consume the remainder. The percentage can exceed 100 because it is an arithmetic comparison, while the wording beside it makes clear that the total is above the general reference. No result diagnoses caffeine toxicity or predicts symptoms.

Timing also matters but is outside this page. EFSA notes that 100 mg near bedtime can affect sleep in some adults, and a daily total cannot show when doses were consumed or how much remains in the body. Use the Coffee Kick Calculator for an explicitly parameterized timing model, not this tally.

Pure or highly concentrated caffeine deserves special caution. FDA warns that such products can cause serious harm and should not be treated like ordinary beverages. This calculator is for adding declared dietary amounts, not for measuring powder, planning concentrated doses or responding to symptoms. Seek prompt professional or emergency advice for a suspected overdose or severe symptoms rather than relying on a web calculation.

For ordinary tracking, record each product’s declared milligrams, count partial servings honestly and update the other-sources field as the day changes. The arithmetic is exact decimal multiplication and addition, with rounding only at the displayed boundary. The uncertainty comes from the caffeine figure supplied, so better label data improves the result more than extra decimal places ever could.

The formula.

daily total = servings × caffeine per serving + other caffeine

The coffee subtotal is servings multiplied by milligrams per serving. Other caffeine is then added once. For two 90 mg servings plus 20 mg elsewhere, coffee contributes 180 mg and the total is 200 mg. That is 200/400 × 100 = 50% of the general healthy-adult reference, leaving an arithmetic difference of 200 mg. The calculator does not interpret that difference as permission to consume more.

A worked example.
