For adults aged 19 to 50, the RDA is 1,000 milligrams per day. The IOM derived this value from a factorial model that sums obligatory calcium losses and desired retention. Urinary calcium excretion averages 150 to 200 milligrams per day in adults on typical diets. Endogenous fecal calcium—calcium secreted into the gut and not reabsorbed—averages 100 to 150 milligrams per day. Dermal losses through sweat add another 20 to 80 milligrams per day. For adults in calcium equilibrium, net absorption must offset these losses. With a fractional absorption efficiency of approximately 25 to 30 percent from mixed diets, an intake of 1,000 milligrams yields 250 to 300 milligrams of absorbed calcium, which covers the 200 to 300 milligrams of daily obligatory loss. The RDA includes a margin to account for inter-individual variation in absorption and excretion.
For women aged 51 to 70, the RDA increases to 1,200 milligrams per day.
