The formula.

Albumin is scored in the opposite direction because lower albumin reflects worse synthetic function. INR receives 1 point when it is below 1.7, 2 points from 1.7 to 2.3, and 3 points above 2.3. Some historical tables use prothrombin time prolongation instead of INR. This calculator uses INR because it is common in modern calculator interfaces and easier for users to enter directly. If a production implementation supports prothrombin time prolongation, it should make that a separate mode instead of mixing both measures in one field.

The ascites and encephalopathy inputs are categorical. No ascites receives 1 point, mild or controlled ascites receives 2 points, and moderate to severe or refractory ascites receives 3 points. Can Child-Pugh be calculated from labs alone?
No. Three components are laboratory-based, but ascites and hepatic encephalopathy require clinical assessment. A calculator can score bilirubin, albumin, and INR from values, but it cannot determine whether ascites is absent, controlled, or severe, and it cannot grade encephalopathy from a text box.
