Background.
A bowling economy rate is the number of runs a bowler concedes per over: Economy = Runs conceded ÷ Overs bowled. Lower is better. It is the containment statistic — it measures how much a bowler leaks while they are on, without any reference to whether they take wickets.
The arithmetic looks trivial and is not, because of how cricket writes overs. A scorecard figure of 9.4 does not mean nine point four overs. It means nine overs and four balls, which is 58 balls, which is 9.6667 overs. Dividing 47 runs by 9.4 gives 5.00; dividing by the correct 9.6667 gives 4.86. That is a 0.14 error in the direction that flatters nobody, and it is the single commonest mistake in amateur cricket statistics. This calculator takes the overs figure in scorecard notation, converts it to balls at six to the over — MCC Law 17.1: "The ball shall be bowled from each end alternately in overs of 6 balls" — and divides properly. It also refuses a figure like 9.7, because the digit after the point is a ball count and a sixth ball completes the over.
Economy rate is the over-denominated half of a bowler's record. The wicket-denominated half is the bowling average, runs conceded per wicket taken, and Quanta keeps that on a separate page. This page never asks for wickets and the average page never asks for overs, because they answer genuinely different questions: economy tells you whether a bowler can be trusted to bowl at the death, average tells you whether they are worth picking to take wickets. The two are joined by the bowling strike rate, balls per wicket, through the identity average = strike rate × economy ÷ 6.
As with the average, the runs that count are set by the Laws rather than by intuition. Runs off the bat count against the bowler. Wides count — MCC Law 22.7: "apart from any award of 5 Penalty runs, all runs resulting from a Wide shall be debited against the bowler" — and the ICC playing conditions reproduce that clause word for word. No balls count, both the one-run penalty under Law 21.16 and any runs the batters take off the delivery. Byes and leg byes do not count, because Law 23 credits them to the batting side rather than the bowler. Take the runs figure from the bowler's own line on the scorecard and all of that is already handled.
Context for the numbers: the ICC Men's ODI playing conditions cap an innings at 50 overs and a bowler at 10 of them, so an ODI economy rate is built from at most a fifth of the innings. The T20 World Cup conditions cap the innings at 20 overs and the bowler at 4. Those quotas are why economy rate carries so much weight in the short formats — a bowler cannot make up for an expensive spell by bowling more, and four overs at 11 an over is a game-losing contribution that a good bowling average would completely hide.
The calculator has three modes on the same identity: economy from figures, the runs a spell of a given length costs at a target rate, and the overs a given number of runs represents at a target rate.
What is cricket economy rate calculator?
The economy rate is a leak rate: runs conceded per six-ball over. Formally Econ = R ÷ O, where R is the runs debited to the bowler and O is the overs bowled expressed as a true decimal, i.e. balls ÷ 6. It is quoted to two decimal places beside the bowling average and strike rate in every career record, and it is the statistic most likely to lead a limited-overs conversation. Two things distinguish it from the bowling average. First, its denominator is a measure of workload rather than of success, so it can be computed for a bowler who has taken no wickets at all — there is no undefined case except a bowler who has not bowled a ball. Second, it is directly comparable to a run rate: a bowler with an economy of 6.00 is conceding exactly the run rate a chasing side needs at 6.00 an over, which is why economy rate and required run rate can be reasoned about in the same units. The part-over issue is the practical heart of the statistic. Cricket's O.B notation is a compact way of writing a mixed number of overs and balls, and it is not a decimal: the digit after the point ranges over 0-5 only, and 9.5 followed by one more legal ball becomes 10.0, not 9.6. Any calculator that divides by the raw scorecard figure is systematically wrong for every incomplete spell, and always in the same direction — it inflates the economy rate, because 9.4 as a decimal is smaller than 9.4 overs-and-balls.
How to use this calculator.
- Choose a mode. 'Economy rate' answers the ordinary question from a completed spell. 'Runs conceded' predicts what a spell of a given length costs at a target rate. 'Overs bowled' works out how long a given number of runs represents at that rate.
- Enter runs conceded, taken from the bowler's own line on the scorecard. It already includes runs off the bat, wides and no balls, and already excludes byes, leg byes and 5-run penalties.
- Enter overs in scorecard notation. Nine overs and four balls is 9.4, not 9.67 and not 9.4 overs — the calculator does that conversion for you. The digit after the point must be 0 to 5; if you find yourself wanting to type 9.6, the answer is 10.0.
- Check the 'overs bowled (decimal)' output. It shows what the calculator actually divided by. If you entered 9.4 and it reads 9.6667, the part-over was read correctly.
- Read the economy rate, remembering lower is better, and read 'runs per ball' beside it if you are working in T20 or at the death, where the delivery rather than the over is the meaningful unit.
- For the other half of the bowler's record, run the same runs figure through the cricket bowling average calculator with the wicket count. Economy without average tells you nothing about wicket-taking, and average without economy tells you nothing about control.
The formula.
The identity is Econ = R ÷ O.
The work is all in the denominator. Cricket records overs in a mixed notation, O.B, where O is completed overs and B is the number of balls delivered in the incomplete over. Because an over is six balls under MCC Law 17.1 — and the ICC playing conditions word it as "overs of 6 valid balls" — B can only take the values 0 to 5; a sixth legal ball completes the over and the figure ticks over to the next whole number. So the conversion is:
balls = 6 × O + B overs (decimal) = balls ÷ 6
For 9.4 that is balls = 6 × 9 + 4 = 58, and overs = 58 ÷ 6 = 9.6667. The economy rate is then 6R ÷ balls, which for 47 runs is 282 ÷ 58 = 4.8621.
The consequence of getting this wrong is worth spelling out because it is systematic rather than random. The scorecard figure 9.4 read as a decimal is 9.4, which is smaller than the true 9.6667, so dividing by it inflates the economy rate — in this case to 47 ÷ 9.4 = 5.00, an overstatement of 0.14 runs an over. The error is largest for the part-overs .1 to .5 and vanishes for whole overs, so a calculator with this bug appears correct on most tidy inputs and quietly wrong on every incomplete spell.
One further subtlety about balls: neither a wide nor a no ball counts as one of the six balls of the over under Law 17.3.2, so they do not increase the ball count. The runs from them are still debited to the bowler under Laws 22.7 and 21.16. A bowler therefore pays for extras in the numerator without getting any credit for them in the denominator, which is exactly the intended incentive.
The two inverse modes are algebra on the same line. Solving for runs gives R = Econ × O: a 9.4-over spell at an economy of 6.00 concedes 58 runs, which is a neat coincidence of this example — 58 balls at exactly a run a ball. Solving for overs gives O = R ÷ Econ: 47 runs conceded at 6.00 an over corresponds to 7.8333 overs, or 47 balls. Both inverse modes report runs per ball as Econ ÷ 6, which is 1.00 whenever the economy rate is 6.00.
The undefined case is a bowler who has not bowled a ball, where O = 0. The calculator raises an error rather than dividing by zero, matching the scorecard, which prints nothing at all for a bowler who has not been used.
A worked example.
A bowler's figures read 9.4–0–47–2: nine overs and four balls, no maidens, 47 runs conceded, two wickets. Convert the overs first: 6 × 9 + 4 = 58 balls, and 58 ÷ 6 = 9.6666666667 overs. The economy rate is 47 ÷ 9.6666666667 = 6 × 47 ÷ 58 = 282 ÷ 58 = 4.8620689655, printed as 4.86. Runs per ball is 47 ÷ 58 = 0.8103448276, so the batters took a little over four-fifths of a run from each delivery. Now do it the wrong way, the way almost every quick mental calculation does: 47 ÷ 9.4 = 5.00. That is 0.14 runs an over too high, purely because 9.4 was treated as a decimal rather than as nine overs and four balls. Across a full ODI quota the same class of error moves an economy rate by roughly a tenth of a run an over, which is the difference between a bowler who looks like a fifth bowler and one who looks like a strike option. Switch the calculator to 'Runs conceded' with a target of 6.00 and the same 9.4 overs and it returns 58 runs — 11 more than this bowler actually gave away, so the spell was 11 runs better than a run-a-ball. Switch to 'Overs bowled' with 47 runs at 6.00 and it returns 7.8333333333 overs, or 47 balls: at a run a ball, 47 runs would have taken 47 deliveries, and this bowler took 58 to concede them.
