Ages 13-14: 62 pitches falls in the 3 calendar days band of the Pitch Smart table, so the recommendation is 3 calendar days of rest before pitching again. The daily maximum for this age band is 95 pitches. Pitch Smart also recommends not exceeding 100 combined innings pitched in any 12-month period for this age band. No pitcher should appear in a game as a pitcher for three consecutive days regardless of pitch counts. These are published recommendations, not medical advice — your league's own rules govern.

Background.

Pitch counts, not innings, are how modern youth baseball manages a pitcher's workload — and the reason is simple: an inning can be six pitches or thirty-six. MLB and USA Baseball publish the reference table through the Pitch Smart programme, and it does two things at once. It sets a daily maximum for each age band, from 50 pitches at ages 7-8 up to 120 at ages 19-22. And it sets a required rest period that scales with how many pitches were actually thrown, so a 25-pitch outing and an 80-pitch outing at the same age carry very different consequences for the rest of the week.

This calculator is a lookup against that published table. Choose the age band, enter the pitches thrown, and it returns the recommended days of rest, the daily maximum, how many pitches are still inside it, and — the number coaches most often want mid-game — how many more pitches would push the outing into the next rest tier and cost another day.

Two things it deliberately does not do. It does not extrapolate. The table has two genuine gaps: ages 7-8 have no 3-day or 4-day band at all, and ages 19-22 have a daily maximum of 120 but a top rest band that stops at 105. Where a count falls outside every published band, the calculator returns the highest figure the table does publish and says plainly that nothing beyond that point is published. And it does not issue medical clearance. Pitch Smart's own guidance places responsibility on the league, the parent and the athlete, and asks each organisation to establish rules of its own; a calculator cannot know whether a particular arm is tired. Use this to read the table quickly and accurately, then follow your league's published rules and watch the pitcher.

What is pitch count calculator?

Pitch Smart is a programme run by Major League Baseball and USA Baseball that publishes workload guidelines for youth and adolescent pitchers, developed with an advisory committee of sports medicine specialists. Its central artefact is a table of pitch count limits and required rest recommendations covering seven age bands from 7-8 through 19-22. For each band the table gives a daily maximum — the most pitches recommended in a single game — and five rest tiers keyed to the number of pitches thrown, running from zero days rest up to four. The bands are not proportional: an 11-year-old and a 14-year-old share identical rest tiers but different daily maximums, while a 15-year-old gets a materially larger 0-days-rest allowance (30 pitches rather than 20) than a 14-year-old. Alongside the table, Pitch Smart publishes standing recommendations for each age band: annual combined innings ceilings of 60 for ages 8 and under, 80 for ages 9-12 and 100 for ages 13-18; at least four months a year away from throwing, with two to three of them continuous; no pitching in multiple games on the same day; no appearing as a pitcher on three consecutive days regardless of pitch counts; and no playing catcher on days a player is not pitching. These are recommendations rather than rules of play, and individual leagues adopt, tighten or ignore them independently.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Pick the age band the pitcher falls into. Pitch Smart bands by age, not by league level, so a 13-year-old playing up sits in the 13-14 row regardless of the division he is pitching in.
  2. Enter the pitches thrown in the outing. Count balls, called strikes, swinging strikes, foul balls and every pitch to every batter. Warm-up pitches between innings are not part of the published count.
  3. Read the required rest as calendar days before the next appearance as a pitcher. A pitcher who throws 62 pitches on Monday in the 13-14 band is next available on Friday, not Thursday.
  4. Watch the 'pitches before the rest requirement rises' figure during a game. It is the number that tells you whether finishing an inning is going to cost the pitcher an extra day this week — often the decision a coach is actually making on the mound.
  5. Cross-check against your league's own rules before acting. Little League, travel and showcase organisations each publish their own limits, and a pitcher who plays for more than one of them can clear every individual league's rule while badly exceeding the combined Pitch Smart guidance.

The formula.

There is no formula to derive here — the table is the source of truth, and the value of a calculator is reading it correctly rather than computing something new. What the page does add is four derived counters, each of which is a subtraction:

Pitches left inside the daily maximum is the daily maximum minus the count, floored at zero. Pitches before the rest requirement rises is the first pitch of the next band minus the count; at 62 pitches in the 13-14 band, where the 4-day tier begins at 66, that is four. Share of the daily maximum is the count divided by the daily maximum. Required rest is a straight band lookup.

The two gaps in the published table need stating clearly because they are where a careless implementation invents numbers. Ages 7-8 have no 3-day or 4-day band — the table prints N/A in both columns — so 2 days at 36-50 pitches is simultaneously the top rest tier and the daily maximum. Ages 19-22 have a daily maximum of 120 pitches but a top rest band ending at 105, which leaves 106 to 120 inside the daily limit and outside every rest band. In both situations this calculator returns the highest rest figure the table actually publishes and states in the guidance text that nothing beyond that point is published. It does not extend the pattern, because extending the pattern would mean attributing a recommendation to MLB that MLB has not made.

One more point of interpretation. The rest tiers are keyed to pitches thrown in a single outing, and the guidance is separately explicit that no pitcher should appear as a pitcher on three consecutive days regardless of pitch counts. That means a run of tiny outings — 15 pitches on each of three straight days, all in the 0-days-rest band — clears the pitch-count table and still breaches the standing recommendation. The table is a floor on rest, not a complete workload policy.

A worked example.

Example

A 13-year-old starts on a Monday and is pulled after 62 pitches. In the 13-14 band the daily maximum is 95 pitches and the rest tiers run 1-20 for no rest, 21-35 for one day, 36-50 for two days, 51-65 for three days and 66-95 for four days. Sixty-two falls in the 51-65 band, so the published recommendation is three calendar days of rest — he is next available to pitch on Friday. He was 33 pitches short of the daily maximum, so there was room in the table for him to keep going. But the more interesting number is the margin to the next tier: the four-day band starts at 66, so just four more pitches would have cost him an extra day and pushed his next appearance to Saturday. In percentage terms he threw 65.2631578947% of his daily maximum. That four-pitch margin is exactly the situation Pitch Smart's rest tiers are designed to make visible — with two out in the fifth and a runner on, finishing the inning is very likely to cost more than the inning is worth. Pitch Smart also recommends this age band not exceed 100 combined innings pitched in any 12-month period, and that no pitcher appear as a pitcher on three consecutive days whatever the counts say.

Frequently asked questions.

Are Pitch Smart limits rules, or recommendations?
Recommendations. Pitch Smart's own guidance asks each organisation — league, travel team, showcase or tournament — to establish rules that make players follow the guidelines, and states that ultimately responsibility rests with the parent and the athlete, because a player will often play in several leagues with different affiliations over a year. Many leagues, including Little League, have adopted pitch count rules of their own that are similar but not identical. Always follow the published rules of the competition you are actually in; use this table as the reference the medical advisory work is based on.
Do warm-up pitches count towards the total?
The published table is a count of pitches thrown in the game, and warm-up pitches between innings are not part of it. That said, bullpen work before a start and warm-ups in the pen while getting ready to enter are real throws on a real arm, and the standing guidance to monitor for signs of fatigue applies to them. A pitcher who warms up three separate times without entering has done meaningful work that no pitch count will record.
Why do ages 7-8 have no 3-day or 4-day rest band?
Because the daily maximum for that band is 50 pitches and the 2-day tier already runs from 36 to 50, so there is no pitch count inside the recommended maximum that would require more. The table prints N/A in both columns rather than a number. This calculator does not invent a figure for counts above 50 — it returns the 2-day maximum the table publishes and states that nothing beyond the daily maximum is published for that age band.
What about the gap between 105 and 120 pitches at ages 19-22?
It is a real gap in the published table. Ages 19-22 have a daily maximum of 120 pitches, but the top rest band runs only from 81 to 105. Counts of 106 to 120 are therefore inside the daily maximum and outside every rest band. The calculator returns the table's top figure of four days and says so explicitly rather than extrapolating a fifth tier that MLB has not published. If you are managing a pitcher in that range, your league's rule is the operative one.
How many innings can a young pitcher throw in a year?
Pitch Smart publishes a combined annual innings ceiling for every band up to 18: no more than 60 innings in any 12-month period for ages 8 and under, 80 for ages 9-12, and 100 for ages 13-14 and 15-18. For ages 19-22 no numeric cap is published, with the note that the safe yearly limit varies from pitcher to pitcher. Every band also carries a recommendation to take extended time away from throwing each year — at least four months for ages up to 18, with two to three of those months continuous, and at least three months for ages 19-22 including four continuous weeks off all overhead throwing.
