A square footage calculator answers the single most common question in home improvement, real estate, and construction planning: how big is this space? The math behind it is simple multiplication, but the surrounding decisions are not always simple. A plain rectangle only needs length times width. A den addition, a bumped-out closet, or an L-shaped living and dining combination needs the area of two rectangles added together. A buyer comparing listings needs a number that means the same thing on every listing. A homeowner pricing flooring, paint, or drywall needs that area translated into a materials budget before ever calling a contractor. This calculator handles all three needs from one set of inputs: pick a rectangle or an L-shape, enter the dimensions, and optionally enter a cost rate per square foot to get a rough materials estimate alongside the area.
Square footage is not a casual term in residential real estate. The American National Standards Institute publishes ANSI Z765, Square Footage — Method for Calculating, developed originally by the National Association of Home Builders and now maintained by Home Innovation Research Labs as the secretariat of an ANSI Accredited Standards Committee. ANSI Z765 defines finished square footage as the sum of finished areas on each level of a house, measured at floor level to the exterior finished surface of the outside walls, and it sets rules for what counts as finished area versus unfinished area, how stairwells and openings are treated, and the minimum ceiling height a space needs to count at all. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac now require ANSI Z765-compliant measurement for appraisals submitted through the Uniform Appraisal Dataset, which is why the standard shows up constantly in real estate contexts even though most homeowners never read it directly. This calculator does not implement every provision of ANSI Z765 — it does not adjudicate ceiling height minimums or below-grade reporting rules — but it uses the same core method: decompose the space into rectangles, multiply length by width for each one, and sum the results.
Most real rooms and most real houses are not perfect rectangles. A great room that opens into a dining nook, a garage with an attached workshop bump-out, or an L-shaped ranch house floor plan are all common enough that a square footage tool needs a second mode. This calculator's L-shape mode treats the space as two rectangles: a primary section and an extension section, each with its own length and width, added together. This two-rectangle decomposition is the standard way irregular polygonal floor plans are handled by hand before any digital tool existed, and it scales to more complex shapes by running the primary rectangle multiple times and summing manually. For a shape with more than two rectangular sections, run the calculator once per section and add the results.
The calculator also reports the result in square meters, using the exact conversion defined by the International System of Units: one foot equals exactly 0.3048 meters by international agreement, so one square foot equals exactly 0.3048 squared, or 0.09290304, square meters. This is not a rounded approximation — it is the exact factor published in NIST Special Publication 811 and the BIPM SI Brochure, the two standard references for unit conversion. International buyers, architects working in metric-native countries, and cross-border project documentation all need this number, and getting it exactly right avoids compounding rounding errors across a large project.
Finally, the materials-cost helper multiplies total area by an optional cost rate per square foot. This is intentionally a rough estimate, not a bid. Flooring, paint, drywall, tile, and framing all price differently per square foot, waste factors are not included, and labor is not included. The value of the helper is speed: before calling three contractors for quotes, a homeowner can sanity-check whether a project is in the right order of magnitude. What is square footage calculator?
Square footage is the total floor area of a space, expressed in square feet, and it is the standard unit for describing the size of a room, an addition, or an entire house in the United States. It is calculated by multiplying length by width for a rectangular space, in the same units, and it can be extended to irregular shapes by decomposing the space into a set of rectangles and adding their individual areas together.
For whole-house reporting, ANSI Z765-2020 defines finished square footage specifically: it must be measured at floor level to the exterior finished surface of the outside walls, it excludes unfinished areas such as unheated garages and unfinished basements, and it requires a minimum ceiling height (generally 7 feet, with limited exceptions for sloped ceilings and areas under beams or stairs) for a space to count as finished. Below-grade finished area is reported separately from above-grade finished area under the standard. Real estate listings, appraisals, and new-construction reporting from the U.S. Census Bureau's Characteristics of New Housing survey all rely on consistent square footage measurement for the numbers to be comparable across properties.
This calculator computes raw geometric area — length times width, optionally with a second rectangular section added for an L-shaped space — without adjudicating the finished/unfinished distinction or ceiling-height rules from ANSI Z765. It is the right tool for sizing a room, a single-story addition, a slab, or a flooring or paint job. For a full ANSI Z765-compliant whole-house appraisal figure, a licensed appraiser or the standard itself remains the authority.
How to use this calculator.
- Choose Rectangle for a single rectangular space, or L-shape if the space has one rectangular extension.
- Enter the length and width of the primary section (Section A) in feet.
- If you selected L-shape, enter the length and width of the extension section (Section B).
- Optionally enter a material cost per square foot to get a rough materials-budget estimate.
- Read the total area in square feet and square meters, plus the estimated material cost if you entered a rate.

The formula.
In rectangle mode, the calculator multiplies length1 by width1 and stops there — the extension inputs are present in the form but are not added to the total. In L-shape mode, it multiplies length1 by width1 for the primary section, multiplies length2 by width2 for the extension section, and adds the two products together. This two-rectangle decomposition is the standard hand-calculation method for any floor plan that can be split into two rectangular pieces, and it is exact — there is no approximation involved, only the precision of the length and width measurements entered.
The square-meter conversion uses the exact SI relationship between the foot and the meter: 1 foot = 0.3048 meters by international definition (not a rounded approximation), so 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 square meters exactly. The calculator multiplies the total area in square feet by this exact factor rather than by a rounded 0.0929, which matters when the area is large — a 1,500 square foot house computed with the exact factor gives 139.35456 square meters, and even a small rounding error in the conversion factor compounds across a large area.
The materials-cost helper is the simplest calculation in the tool: total area multiplied by a user-entered cost rate per square foot. It deliberately does not add a waste factor, does not distinguish between materials, and does not include labor, because those variables differ enormously by material and by project. Its purpose is a fast order-of-magnitude check, not a bid. A worked example.
A homeowner is planning a den addition onto an existing 20 by 15 foot living room, adding a 10 by 8 foot bump-out for a reading nook. The primary section area is 20 times 15, or 300 square feet. The extension section area is 10 times 8, or 80 square feet. The total area is 300 plus 80, or 380 square feet. Converted to metric, 380 square feet equals 380 times 0.09290304, or 35.3031552 square meters. At an estimated $4 per square foot for flooring material, the rough materials budget is 380 times 4, or $1,520. This is a planning estimate — the homeowner still needs to add waste allowance and confirm pricing with a supplier before ordering, which the Flooring Calculator handles directly.
