An easy grader is a quick-reference tool built for the specific workflow of grading a stack of papers with a pen: instead of counting how many answers a student got right, a teacher marking papers by hand typically counts how many they got wrong, because that is faster to tally as you go through each page. This calculator takes that same input — total points possible, and how many points or questions this particular student missed — and returns the percentage score, the letter grade, and two extra numbers that make grading a whole stack faster: what the score would be with one fewer point missed, and what it would be with one more.
That last pair of numbers is the actual differentiator of an easy-grader-style tool compared with a plain percentage calculator. When you are working through twenty-five papers in a row, the number of mistakes varies from paper to paper — one student missed 2, the next missed 3, the next missed 5 — and rather than re-entering a new total each time to check what a slightly different number of mistakes would have produced, having the adjacent values already computed means you can glance at three numbers at once and immediately place the next paper without recalculating from scratch. The formula.
The score percentage is the total points on the assignment minus the points missed, divided by the total, times 100. With 25 total points and 3 missed, that is 25 minus 3, or 22, divided by 25, times 100, equals 88.0 percent. The "one fewer missed" and "one more missed" outputs apply the identical formula to a missed count that is one lower or one higher than the actual input, clamped so the missed count can never go below zero (a student cannot miss negative points) or above the total (a student cannot miss more points than the assignment is worth). With 3 missed out of 25, one fewer missed is 2, giving (25-2)/25*100 = 92.0 percent, and one more missed is 4, giving (25-4)/25*100 = 84.0 percent. The value of each point is simply 100 divided by the total points: on a 25-point assignment, each point is worth exactly 4 percentage points, which is why moving one point in either direction shifts the score by exactly 4 points in this example.
The clamping at the edges matters for correctness. If a student missed zero points (a perfect score), "one fewer missed" cannot mean missing negative one point, so the calculator holds that value at the perfect score itself rather than producing a nonsensical result above 100 percent. Symmetrically, if a student missed every point on the assignment, "one more missed" cannot mean missing more points than the assignment contains, so that value is held at zero rather than going negative. This ensures every output stays a valid, real-world percentage between 0 and 100 no matter how many points a specific student missed.
A worked example.
A teacher is grading a stack of 25-point quizzes and marks 3 wrong answers on the paper in front of them. The score is (25 minus 3) divided by 25, times 100, equal to 88.0 percent, which is a B on the standard scale. Before moving to the next paper, the teacher glances at the two neighbouring values already computed: if this student had missed only 2 (one fewer), the score would have been 92.0 percent; if they had missed 4 (one more), it would have been 84.0 percent. The value of each point on this particular quiz is 100 divided by 25, or exactly 4 percentage points, which is why each of those neighbouring values differs from 88.0 by exactly 4 points. Armed with that quick mental chart, the teacher can place the next paper in the stack — whether it has 2, 3, or 4 mistakes — without recalculating from scratch.
