Where test-grade calculators genuinely differ from each other, and where this one tries to be more honest than most, is the second step: converting that percentage into a letter grade. There is no single national standard for that conversion. A 90.0 percent score is an A on the traditional 90/80/70/60 scale that many American K-12 schools and some introductory college courses still use. The same 90.0 percent score is an A-minus, not a straight A, on the plus/minus scale published by institutions such as Columbia University's School of Professional Studies, where a full A requires 93 percent or higher. Both conventions are genuinely common in the United States; neither one is universal, and a single percentage score can land on either side of a full letter-grade boundary depending entirely on which scale the instructor or institution has adopted. The calculator also reports two numbers that a raw percentage alone does not make obvious. The first is questions missed, the simple complement of questions correct against the total, useful for students who want to know exactly how many more they would have needed for the next grade band up. The second is the value of each question expressed as a percentage of the total score, calculated as 100 divided by the total number of questions. On a 25-question test, each question is worth exactly 4 percentage points; on a 40-question test, each is worth 2.5 points. That single number explains, at a glance, why missing three questions on a short 10-question quiz (a 30-point swing) feels so much more punishing than missing three questions on a 60-question final exam (a 5-point swing) — the same raw number of mistakes carries very different weight depending on how many questions the test contained in total.

The final-grade calculator answers a forward-looking, multi-variable question: given your current running grade in a class, a target grade, and the weight of an upcoming final exam, what score do you need on that final? That is an algebraic solve for an unknown, aimed at a student who has not yet taken the assessment. This calculator instead answers a backward-looking, single-variable question about a test that has already happened: you already have the raw score, and you want the percentage and letter grade right now, with no class-level context, no weighting, and no target grade involved at all. What is test grade calculator?
A test grade is the percentage score obtained by dividing the number of questions (or points) answered correctly by the total number of questions (or points) possible, then multiplying by 100. That percentage is then mapped to a letter grade using a cutoff table set by the school, district, or institution administering the test. Two conventions are especially common in the United States. The first, sometimes called the "standard" or traditional scale, uses whole letter grades only: 90 percent and above is an A, 80 and above a B, 70 and above a C, 60 and above a D, and anything below 60 an F. The second, a plus/minus scale published in essentially this form by institutions such as Columbia University's School of Professional Studies, subdivides each letter into a plus and minus band: A+ is 98-100, A is 93-97.99, A- is 90-92.99, B+ is 87-89.99, and so on down to F below 60. Neither convention is a national or legal standard — the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, which tracks grading practices for its High School Transcript Studies, has documented that grading scales vary by state, district, and even individual instructor. The formula.
The percentage score is the simplest possible ratio: divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100 to express it on a 0-100 scale. With 27 correct out of 30 total, the calculation is 27 divided by 30, which equals 0.9, times 100, which equals 90.0 percent. Questions missed is simply the total minus the correct count: 30 minus 27 equals 3. The value of each question, 100 divided by the total, tells you the percentage-point cost of a single wrong answer on that specific test: 100 divided by 30 equals approximately 3.33 percentage points per question.
The part of the calculation that is not pure arithmetic is the percentage-to-letter-grade mapping, because that mapping is a policy choice, not a mathematical fact. On the standard scale used by this calculator, a score of exactly 90.0 percent clears the 90-percent threshold for an A. On the plus/minus scale, drawn from the cutoff table published by Columbia University's School of Professional Studies, the same 90.0 percent falls inside the 90-92.99 band reserved for A-minus, one full step below a plain A, which on that scale requires 93 percent or higher. This is not a bug or an inconsistency between the two outputs — it is the entire point of offering both scales explicitly. A raw score that would be reported as a full letter grade higher under one common convention is reported as a partial grade lower under another, equally common, convention. A worked example.
A student takes a 30-question history test and gets 27 questions right. Percentage: 27 divided by 30, times 100, equals 90.0 percent. On the standard scale selected here, 90.0 percent clears the 90-percent threshold, so the letter grade is a straight A. Questions missed is 30 minus 27, which equals 3. The value of each question on this particular test is 100 divided by 30, or about 3.33 percentage points, meaning each of those 3 missed questions cost the student roughly 3.33 points off a possible 100. Had the same student's teacher instead used the plus/minus scale common at many colleges — the one published by Columbia University's School of Professional Studies, where a full A requires 93 percent or higher — that identical 90.0 percent score would be reported as an A-minus rather than a straight A, because 90.0 falls inside the 90-92.99 band reserved for the minus grade. Nothing about the student's actual performance changed between the two scenarios; only the grading convention did, which is exactly why this calculator asks which scale to apply rather than assuming one is standard everywhere.
