IB Points Calculator — 2026 Diploma Criteria
Add six IB subject grades, the 2026 TOK/EE core matrix and CAS status, then check every published Diploma Programme award condition.
IB Points Calculator
Background.
The IB Diploma total combines six subject grades with a small core score, but reaching 24 points is only one of several award conditions. This calculator implements the International Baccalaureate's official DP passing-criteria page as updated on 19 February 2026, including its full TOK/extended-essay matrix and the separate HL and SL checks.
Each subject contributes a grade from 1 through 7, so the six subjects can supply up to 42 points. Theory of knowledge and the extended essay are graded A through E and together contribute zero to three core points. Creativity, activity, service does not add points, but completion is required. The maximum total is therefore 45.
Enter the HL subjects first. With three HL subjects, subjects 1–3 count as HL and subjects 4–6 as SL. With four HL subjects, subjects 1–4 are HL, but the official criterion counts the three highest HL grades; subjects 5–6 are SL and need at least five combined points rather than the ordinary nine-point SL minimum.
The calculator checks every published condition: CAS completion, at least 24 total points, no subject below grade 2, no more than two grade 2s, no more than three grades of 3 or below, at least 12 counted HL points, the applicable SL minimum, and no E in TOK or the extended essay. It reports the number of unmet conditions rather than hiding which type of failure may exist.
The worked example has HL grades 6, 6 and 5 and SL grades 5, 5 and 4. Subjects total 31. TOK B with EE C gives two core points in the current matrix, producing 33. CAS is complete and every minimum is satisfied, so the arithmetic check says the criteria are met.
That wording is conditional, not an official award. Only IB records and the school coordinator establish whether grades were awarded, CAS was authenticated and no administrative or academic-integrity condition affects the result. A copied or predicted grade is not a transcript.
The page also does not predict university admission. IB explicitly says there is no universal passing score for an individual course, and institutions may require particular subjects or totals far above the diploma minimum. Check each programme's current entry rules.
All subject inputs are guarded whole numbers from 1 through 7, and every select token must match the current matrix. Decimal.js performs the sums and output values round once, though valid inputs make every points result an integer. The edition date remains visible because programme rules can change.
What is ib points calculator?
IB Diploma points are the sum of six 1–7 subject grades and zero to three core points from the current TOK/extended-essay matrix. An award also requires CAS and multiple subject-distribution conditions. A 24-point total alone is not sufficient.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter subjects in order with all HL courses first.
- Choose whether three or four HL subjects are registered.
- Select the official TOK and extended-essay grades and CAS completion.
- Read total, core, HL/SL subtotals and the number of unmet 2026 conditions.
- Confirm the official outcome with the IB transcript or school coordinator.
The formula.
Add the six subject grades. Look up TOK and EE in the official 2026 matrix; any E is a failing condition, otherwise the cell contributes zero to three. Add that core value to the subject sum. Separately count grade 2s, grades at or below 3, the three counted HL grades and the SL subtotal.
For 6+6+5 HL and 5+5+4 SL, subject points are 31. TOK B and EE C give 2, so total is 33. HL is 17 and SL is 14; all current minima are met.
A worked example.
The six subjects total 31 points: 17 at HL and 14 at SL. In the official 2026 core matrix, TOK B plus EE C adds 2 points, giving 33 out of 45. CAS is complete, every subject is at least 2, and all distribution minima are met, so the calculator reports that the diploma criteria are met.
