The research basis for the comparison numbers matters because the commonly repeated "average reader reads 300 words per minute" figure has a documented, traceable history of being an overestimate. A 2019 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Memory and Language, drawing on 190 separate studies and 18,573 total participants going back to 1901, found that the actual average silent reading rate for adults reading English non-fiction is 238 words per minute, and 260 words per minute for fiction — meaningfully lower than the 300 wpm figure that has been repeated in psychology textbooks and popular writing for decades. The same meta-analysis traced how the 300 wpm number originated from a handful of small, sometimes cherry-picked early studies, and found that when a much larger, more representative pool of research is combined, the true average is noticeably lower. The distinction between non-fiction and fiction matters because the two have measurably different average word lengths, and average word length is one of the strongest predictors of reading speed measured in words per minute: shorter average words let a reader cover more words in the same amount of time, even at an identical underlying processing speed. The same meta-analysis found that English fiction words average about 4.2 letters, against about 4.6 letters for non-fiction, which by itself explains most of the roughly 20-words-per-minute gap between the two genres' average reading rates. The formula.
Reading speed is simply the number of words read divided by the number of minutes it took: 1,200 words read in 5 minutes gives 1,200 divided by 5, equal to 240 words per minute. Comparing that to the peer-reviewed non-fiction average of 238 wpm, 240 divided by 238, times 100, equals approximately 100.8 percent of the typical average — essentially right at the researched average rate. Because the typical adult non-fiction range runs from 175 to 300 wpm, a rate of 240 wpm falls comfortably within that range, so the calculator reports it as "within the typical adult range" rather than below or above it. Minutes to read 10,000 words is simply 10,000 divided by the words-per-minute rate: 10,000 divided by 240 equals approximately 41.7 minutes, a practical estimate for planning how long a longer reading assignment at this same pace would take.
The 238 wpm (non-fiction) and 260 wpm (fiction) comparison baselines, and the 175-300 and 200-320 typical ranges, come directly from the pooled results of a 2019 peer-reviewed meta-analysis covering 190 individual studies and 18,573 participants spanning more than a century of reading-rate research (1901-2019). That same research explicitly found that the far more commonly cited "300 words per minute" figure is an overestimate not well supported when the full body of research is combined — it traces the popular number's origin to a small number of early studies that happened to test particularly fast readers or particularly short, easy texts.
