Background.

This SAT score estimator converts the number of questions you answered correctly on the Reading & Writing section and the Math section into an estimated scaled score on the familiar 400-1600 total scale, with the two section subscores (each 200-800) shown separately. Enter how many of the 54 Reading & Writing questions and how many of the 44 Math questions you got right, and the calculator returns an estimated section score for each and an estimated total.

The single most important thing to understand before using any SAT score tool, including this one, is that College Board's real scoring is not a simple, fixed formula. Since spring 2024 the SAT has been administered as a digital, multistage adaptive test: each section is split into two modules, and the difficulty of the second module you receive depends on how you performed on the first. Two students who both answer, say, 40 of 54 Reading & Writing questions correctly can still receive different official scaled scores if one of them was routed to a harder second module than the other. On top of that, College Board equates every test form separately, so the raw-to-scaled conversion table itself is not identical from one test date to the next. Because of this, there is no single, universal raw-score-to-scaled-score table that applies to every real SAT administration — official conversion tables are published per specific practice test, and even those apply most cleanly to the fixed-form paper practice tests rather than to the adaptive live exam.

Given that reality, this calculator does not attempt to reverse-engineer or reproduce College Board's actual non-linear, per-form, adaptive-module curve — doing so without a verified official table would mean presenting an invented number as if it were authoritative, which this calculator's design deliberately avoids. Instead, it uses a transparent, disclosed linear model: your raw score is treated as a straight-line proportion of the 200-to-800 point range for that section, and the result is rounded to the nearest 10 points, matching how real SAT section scores are always reported in multiples of 10. A raw score of 40 out of 54 on Reading & Writing, for example, is roughly 74.1 percent of the way through that section, so the estimator places the section score about 74.1 percent of the way from 200 to 800, then rounds to the nearest multiple of ten.

This linear approach is a deliberate simplification, not a claim of precision. In the real exam, scaled scores compress at both extremes: near a perfect score, missing even one or two additional questions can cost noticeably more scaled points than missing one or two questions in the middle of the range, because fewer test-takers cluster near the very top and very bottom of the distribution. This estimator does not reproduce that compression — it treats every raw point as equally valuable across the full range. That means the estimate will tend to run a little low near the very top of the scale and a little high near the very bottom, compared with an official score. For a rough self-check while working through practice questions, that is a reasonable trade-off; for an authoritative score, it is not a substitute for College Board's own Bluebook practice tests and official score reports, which apply the real, form-specific, adaptively-scored conversion.

Use this tool the way you would use any quick practice-test estimator: to get a ballpark sense of where a raw score roughly lands on the familiar 1600-point scale while you are studying, not as a prediction of the exact number that will appear on your official score report.

Because the live exam is adaptive and each test form is separately equated, there is no single universal formula that converts "number of questions correct" into an official scaled score for every administration — the real conversion depends on which second-module difficulty a test-taker received and which specific form they sat. This calculator is a transparent linear estimator: it maps your raw score proportionally onto the 200-800 range for each section and rounds to the nearest 10, the same increment official SAT section scores are always reported in. The formula.

scaled = 200 + round(raw⁄max × 600, 10)

For each section, the estimator computes the fraction of questions answered correctly (raw divided by max), multiplies that fraction by 600 — the width of the 200-to-800 scoring range — and adds the result to the 200-point floor. The result is then rounded to the nearest multiple of 10, because real SAT section scores are always reported in increments of 10, never as an arbitrary decimal.

For Reading & Writing with 40 of 54 correct: 40 divided by 54 is approximately 0.7407, times 600 is approximately 444.44, rounded to the nearest 10 is 440, plus the 200-point floor gives an estimated section score of 640. For Math with 35 of 44 correct: 35 divided by 44 is approximately 0.7955, times 600 is approximately 477.27, rounded to the nearest 10 is 480, plus 200 gives an estimated section score of 680. The estimated total is the sum of the two section estimates: 640 plus 680 equals 1320.

This is explicitly a straight-line (linear) model, not College Board's actual scoring curve. The real curve is non-linear — near the top and bottom of the distribution, scaled scores tend to move faster per raw point than they do in the middle of the range, because official equating accounts for how the overall test-taker population is actually distributed on a specific form. This estimator does not have access to that population data or to the specific adaptive-module routing a real test-taker receives, so it cannot and does not attempt to reproduce those effects. It exists to give a fast, transparent, order-of-magnitude estimate — not a substitute for an official score report.

A worked example.

Example

A student reviewing a practice test got 40 of the 54 Reading & Writing questions right and 35 of the 44 Math questions right. For Reading & Writing: 40/54 = 0.7407, times 600 = 444.4, rounded to the nearest 10 is 440, plus 200 gives an estimated section score of 640. For Math: 35/44 = 0.7955, times 600 = 477.3, rounded to the nearest 10 is 480, plus 200 gives an estimated section score of 680. The estimated total score is 640 + 680 = 1320. Overall percent correct across all 98 questions is (40+35)/98 = 76.5 percent. Because the real SAT is adaptively scored and equated per form, a student who answered these same raw numbers correctly on an actual test date could see an official score somewhat above or below 1320 — this estimate is a linear approximation for practice purposes, not the official number.

Is this the same score I'll get on my official SAT score report?
No, and it is not designed to be. Your official score comes from College Board's own adaptive, per-form-equated scoring process, which accounts for which specific second-module difficulty you were routed to and how your particular test form compares to others. This calculator uses a transparent linear estimate instead, because we could not verify College Board's exact non-linear conversion numbers from a primary source, and inventing a fake-precise curve would be worse than being upfront about using a simple model. Will missing one more question near a perfect score cost me the same points as missing one near the middle of the scale?
On the real SAT, usually not — official scoring curves tend to be steeper near the very top and very bottom of the scale than in the middle, because of how the overall test-taker population's performance is distributed on a given form. This calculator's linear model treats every raw point as equally valuable across the whole range, so it does not reproduce that steepening. In practice this means the estimator can run a little low for very high raw scores and a little high for very low raw scores compared with an official score.
Should I use this to decide whether to retake the SAT?
Use it only as a rough gut-check, not as the basis for a retake decision. Because this is a simplified linear estimate rather than College Board's official scoring, the number it produces could differ from your actual official score by a meaningful margin, especially near the top of the scale. For a retake decision, rely on your actual score report and College Board's own percentile data for the specific test date you took.

Does guessing on unanswered questions hurt my raw score?
The current digital SAT does not apply a separate penalty for incorrect answers beyond simply not earning credit for that question, so an incorrect guess costs you the same as leaving the question blank in terms of raw score. This calculator only needs your final count of correct answers, so it does not distinguish between wrong answers and blanks — both simply do not add to your raw score.
Can I use this for the old paper SAT or for the PSAT?
This calculator is built around the digital SAT's current structure: 54 Reading & Writing questions and 44 Math questions, each section scored 200-800. The PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 use a related but distinct scale (typically 160-760 per section), and the legacy paper SAT used a different section structure entirely. Using this calculator's raw-score inputs for those different tests will not produce a meaningful estimate.
