The formula.
The acceptance rate is admitted applicants divided by total applicants, multiplied by 100. With 2,000 admitted out of 25,000 total applicants, that is 2,000 divided by 25,000, equal to 0.08, times 100, equal to 8.0 percent. The 1-in-X figure inverts that same ratio: total applicants divided by admitted applicants, which for this example is 25,000 divided by 2,000, equal to 12.5 — meaning roughly 1 applicant was admitted for every 12.5 who applied. Denied applicants is simply the total minus the admitted count: 25,000 minus 2,000 equals 23,000.
One edge case is worth noting explicitly: if a school admitted zero applicants in a given cycle (a rare but not impossible scenario for a program that was cancelled or paused), dividing total applicants by zero admitted would be mathematically undefined. Rather than returning an undefined or infinite result, this calculator reports the total applicant count itself as a floor value for the 1-in-X figure in that specific edge case — communicating "the odds are at least this long" rather than an error, while still keeping every reported number a real, finite figure.
