Background.

This calculator turns a length you already know into a reading time, and turns a time slot you have been given back into the length that fills it. Give it a word count, a page count or a character count and it returns silent reading time, read-aloud time, and the same length restated in the other two units. Flip the direction and it answers the question every speaker and every content brief starts from: an eighteen-minute slot, at 238 words a minute, is 4,284 words.

It is deliberately not a word counter. If you have the text in front of you, paste it into the word counter — that page counts the words and gives you a reading time in one step. This page exists for the far commoner case where you have a number and not the text: a 90,000-word manuscript, a 320-page book, a 1,200-word brief, a 280-character post, a chapter someone described to you over the phone. You cannot paste 90,000 words into a textarea to find out how long they take to read, and no live page in this catalog runs the calculation backwards from a time slot at all. Those two gaps are what this page is for.

The arithmetic is one division, so everything that matters here is in the rates, and the rates are estimates rather than constants. The silent-reading default of 238 words per minute is the meta-analytic mean from Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 studies and 18,573 participants, for silent reading of English non-fiction. The same paper puts fiction at 260 words per minute, because narrative prose is more predictable than exposition, and reading aloud at 183 words per minute, because speech is rate-limited by articulation rather than by the eye. All three numbers are editable inputs on purpose: reading rate varies with age, with first- versus second-language status, with text difficulty and with whether the reader is studying, reading or skimming, and a page that hid them behind a constant would be pretending to a precision the research does not support.

One divergence is worth stating before you compare pages rather than after. The word counter on this site defaults to 200 words per minute, the convention that Medium, Substack and most "5 min read" badges use; this page defaults to the measured 238. The two pages will therefore give different times for the same word count, and neither is wrong — 200 is a deliberately conservative publishing convention and 238 is a measured population mean. Both fields are editable, so you can make either page agree with the other in one keystroke.

The words-per-page setting is a convention too, and a looser one. No standards body defines how many words fit on a page: it depends entirely on trim size, type size, leading and margins. The 250 default is the long-standing figure for a double-spaced 12-point manuscript page with one-inch margins, the format that publishers' own submission guidance specifies, and it is why an 80,000-word novel is quoted as roughly 320 pages. A typeset paperback page holds nearer 350 to 450 words, so if you are working from a printed book rather than a manuscript, raise the setting before you trust the page figure.

Everything is computed with arbitrary-precision decimal arithmetic and rounded once, at the end. The two minute outputs are unrounded; only the human-readable labels round, and they round the total number of seconds before splitting it into hours, minutes and seconds, which is what keeps the label honest at a carry boundary.

What is reading time calculator?

Reading time is the length of a passage divided by a reading rate. The length can be counted exactly; the rate cannot, because it is a property of the reader and not of the text. That asymmetry is the whole subject: a 1,500-word article is 1,500 words for everybody, but it is six minutes for a fluent adult reading non-fiction silently, eight minutes read out loud, four minutes skimmed, and considerably longer for someone reading in a second language or studying to remember.

The research literature separates several rates that are often conflated. Silent reading for comprehension of ordinary prose averages 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction. Reading a prepared text aloud averages 183, and is capped by how fast a voice can articulate rather than by how fast the eye can move. Spontaneous speech is slower again, 125 to 160 words per minute, because it carries hesitation, repair and pausing that a read text does not. Carver's taxonomy adds the extremes: memorising is nearer 100 words per minute, skimming 450, and scanning for a single fact 600. Claims of 1,000-plus words per minute from speed-reading programmes are, in the reviewed literature, skimming with a comprehension cost rather than reading faster.

So the honest form of the answer is a rate plus a time, not a time alone. This page shows both, keeps both rates in editable fields, and names the source of every default.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Pick a direction. 'Length → reading time' takes a length and returns a time. 'Time slot → length' takes a number of minutes and returns the word count that fills it.
  2. In 'Length → reading time' mode, choose whether your figure is words, pages or characters, then enter it. Characters are divided by 5 to get words; pages are multiplied by the words-per-page setting.
  3. In 'Time slot → length' mode, enter the slot in minutes. It is read as silent-reading minutes at the reading rate below — if you are writing a script to be spoken, put your delivery rate into the reading-rate field so the slot is measured in the right currency.
  4. Set the rates. 238 wpm is the measured mean for silent non-fiction; switch to 260 for fiction, and lower it for a second-language reader or dense technical material. 183 wpm is the read-aloud default.
  5. If you are using pages, check the words-per-page setting first: 250 is a double-spaced manuscript page, 350–450 is a typeset paperback page, and the page figure is only as good as that assumption.
  6. Read the label for the human answer and the decimal-minutes figure beside it for anything you need to add up. If you have the text itself rather than a count, use the word counter instead — it counts the words for you.

The formula.

Every output on this page derives from a single word count, so the first step is always to reduce whatever length you gave to words. Words are taken as they are. Pages are multiplied by the words-per-page setting, 250 by default. Characters are divided by 5, the text-entry research definition of a word as five characters including the following space — the same divisor the typing speed calculator on this site uses, so the two pages cannot disagree with each other about what a word is.

With the word count fixed, silent reading time is the word count divided by the silent reading rate, and read-aloud time is the word count divided by the read-aloud rate. In the reverse direction the equation is simply rearranged: the word count that fills a slot is the slot in minutes multiplied by the silent reading rate. Because it is the same equation rearranged, the two directions round-trip exactly — 18 minutes at 238 words per minute gives 4,284 words, and 4,284 words at 238 words per minute gives 18 minutes back with no drift.

Rounding happens once, and only in the labels. The two decimal-minute outputs are unrounded to ten decimal places: 1,500 words at 238 words per minute is 6.3025210084 minutes, not 6.3. The label is produced by multiplying those minutes by 60, rounding the resulting total seconds to a whole number, and only then splitting it into hours, minutes and seconds — 378 seconds becomes '6 min 18 sec'. Rounding each component separately instead would let a value near a carry boundary render as '6 min 60 sec'. If you need to add several passages together, add the decimal-minute figures and label the total once; adding the labels compounds the rounding.

The read-aloud figure is always the larger of the two, at the default rates by a factor of 238 ⁄ 183, about 1.30. That direction is not a coincidence: silent reading is limited by how fast the eye can take words in, while reading aloud is limited by how fast a mouth can articulate them, and articulation is the slower constraint. If you ever see a read-aloud time shorter than the silent time on this page, one of the two rates has been edited into an unrealistic order.

A worked example.

Example

A 1,500-word feature article, at the default rates. Silent reading first: 1,500 ÷ 238 = 6.3025210084 minutes. Multiplying by 60 gives 378.15 seconds, which rounds to 378 seconds, and 378 seconds splits into 6 minutes and 18 seconds — so the headline answer is 6 min 18 sec. Read aloud, the same 1,500 words divided by 183 words per minute is 8.1967213115 minutes, or 492 seconds, which is 8 min 12 sec. The supporting figures restate the same length in the other two units: 1,500 ÷ 250 = 6 manuscript pages, and 1,500 × 5 = 7,500 characters. Now flip the direction to check the inverse on the same numbers. An 18-minute slot at 238 words per minute is 18 × 238 = 4,284 words, which is 17.136 pages and 21,420 characters, and would take 4,284 ÷ 183 = 23.4098360656 minutes — 23 min 25 sec — to deliver out loud. That last figure is the one that catches speakers out: a script written to fill an 18-minute reading slot overruns an 18-minute speaking slot by more than five minutes, which is why the read-aloud rate belongs on the same page as the silent one.

Why does this page say 238 words per minute when the word counter says 200?
Because they are answering slightly different questions and both say so. 200 wpm is the publishing convention behind the '5 min read' badges on Medium, Substack and most blogs — deliberately conservative, so nobody feels slow. 238 wpm is the measured meta-analytic mean for silent reading of English non-fiction from Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 studies and 18,573 participants. This page is built on the measurement; the word counter is built on the convention. Both rates are editable fields, so if you want the two pages to agree, set this one to 200 or that one to 238.
How long does it take to read a 300-page book?
It depends on what a page holds, which is why words-per-page is an input rather than a constant. At the 250-word manuscript default, 300 pages is 75,000 words, which is 315.1260504202 minutes — 5 hr 15 min 8 sec — of silent reading at 238 wpm. If it is a typeset paperback at 400 words a page, the same 300 pages is 120,000 words and 504.2016806723 minutes, or 8 hr 24 min 12 sec. Set words-per-page from the book in your hand before you trust the answer: count the words on three full lines, divide by three, and multiply by the number of lines on the page.
How many words should a five-minute speech be?
Switch to 'Time slot → length', enter 5 minutes, and put your delivery rate — not the silent reading rate — into the reading-rate field, because the slot has to be measured in the same currency as the delivery. At the 183 wpm read-aloud rate that is 915 words. At a slower, more deliberate 130 wpm it is 650 words. Then rehearse it: the calculator gives you a target, and your own timed read-through gives you the truth, because pauses for effect, laughter and questions are not in any words-per-minute figure.
Why is reading aloud slower than reading silently?
Different bottlenecks. Silent reading is limited by how quickly the eye can fixate and the brain can recognise words, and skilled readers overlap those operations heavily. Reading aloud adds articulation, which is a physical act with a hard ceiling, and it forces you to pronounce every word in order rather than skipping the predictable ones. Brysbaert's meta-analysis measures 183 wpm aloud against 238 wpm silent, a ratio of about 1.30, and that ordering is one of the most stable findings in the literature.
Is the read-aloud rate the same as a speaking rate?
No, and this page keeps them separate on purpose. 183 wpm is reading a prepared written text aloud. Spontaneous or semi-scripted speech is slower — Tauroza and Allison's survey of British English puts the 'average' band at 125 to 160 wpm — because unscripted talk carries hesitation, self-repair and thinking pauses that a read text does not. If you are estimating a conversation, an interview or an unscripted talk, type a figure in that lower band into the read-aloud field.
Why is there no box to paste my text into?
Because that page already exists. The word counter takes a textarea, counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs, and reports a reading time from the count. Duplicating it here would give you two pages doing the same thing and neither doing it better. This page starts one step earlier, from a number, which is the case the word counter cannot serve — you cannot paste a 90,000-word manuscript you do not have in front of you, and you cannot paste anything at all when the question runs backwards from a time slot.
Does reading speed depend on the language and the difficulty of the text?
Strongly, in both cases, which is the main reason the rate is an editable input. Brysbaert's own figures separate fiction at 260 wpm from non-fiction at 238 on difficulty grounds alone. Second-language reading is typically slower than first-language reading of the same passage, and reading to memorise is slower again — Carver's taxonomy puts memorising near 100 wpm against about 300 for normal silent reading and 450 for skimming. Treat the defaults as a starting point for a fluent adult reading ordinary English prose, and move them when your reader or your text is not that.
