A unit price calculator answers the one question every grocery aisle is designed to obscure: which package is actually cheaper per ounce, per pound, per count, or per load? Retail pricing psychology relies on shoppers comparing sticker prices instead of per-unit cost, and package engineering — the practice regulators now call 'shrinkflation' — makes that comparison even harder by quietly shrinking the contents of a package while holding its price steady. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, whose Office of Weights and Measures writes the model regulation that every state unit-pricing law is built on, uses almost exactly this scenario as its own textbook example: a 32-ounce ketchup bottle at $4.99 works out to about $0.16 an ounce, while a 14-ounce bottle at $3.19 works out to about $0.23 an ounce — the larger bottle is the better deal by roughly 32 percent per ounce, even though its sticker price is higher.

This calculator exists because that arithmetic, while simple, is exactly the kind of division most people do not do standing in a store aisle holding two boxes. Unit pricing is not a purely private convenience — it is public policy. NIST's Office of Weights and Measures maintains Handbook 130's Uniform Unit Pricing Regulation, the model law that individual U.S. states adopt (in whole or in part) to require or encourage retailers to post per-unit costs on shelf labels. As of the most recent NIST review, nineteen states and two territories had adopted some form of unit-pricing regulation, eleven of them mandatory. NIST's own consumer research, cited in its December 2024 policy update, found that 82 percent of shoppers use unit pricing when it is clearly displayed — but shelf labels are not always present, not always legible, and not always comparable across brands or store chains, especially online where unit-price disclosure rules are inconsistent. The shrinkflation problem sharpens the stakes further. What is unit price calculator?

Unit price is the cost of a product expressed per standard unit of measure — dollars per ounce, per pound, per liter, per count, or per 100 grams — rather than as a single package price. NIST's Uniform Unit Pricing Regulation (Handbook 130) defines it this way specifically so that shoppers can compare packages of different sizes on a level footing: a $4.99 bottle and a $3.19 bottle are not directly comparable numbers, but $0.16 per ounce and $0.23 per ounce are. The regulation requires that, where unit pricing is mandated, the unit price be computed as price divided by the labeled net quantity, using a small, consistent set of standard units (ounce or pound, or 100 grams or kilogram, depending on how the item is labeled) so that a shopper comparing brand X and brand Y sees costs expressed the same way.

The formula.

Each package's unit price is simply its price divided by its size: unitPrice = price / quantity. Once both unit prices are known, the calculator picks the smaller one as the winner and computes two comparison figures. The savings per unit is the plain dollar difference between the two unit prices — higher unit price minus lower unit price. The percent-cheaper figure divides that savings by the higher (losing) unit price and multiplies by 100, which answers a different question than the raw cents figure: 'by what fraction is the winning package cheaper, relative to the alternative I did not choose?'

Using NIST's own worked example: a 32-ounce bottle at $4.99 has a unit price of 4.99 ÷ 32 = $0.155938 per ounce (displayed as $0.16). A 14-ounce bottle at $3.19 has a unit price of 3.19 ÷ 14 = $0.227857 per ounce (displayed as $0.23). The 32-ounce bottle is cheaper per ounce, so it is the winner. The savings per unit is 0.227857 − 0.155938 = $0.071919 per ounce, and the percent-cheaper figure is 0.071919 ÷ 0.227857 × 100 ≈ 31.56 percent — meaning the smaller bottle costs about 31.6 percent more per ounce than the larger one, even though its total sticker price is lower. This is precisely the gap a sticker-price-only comparison misses, and precisely why unit pricing regulation exists.

The calculator treats a tie (equal unit prices to full precision) as a tie rather than arbitrarily picking a winner, and it guards against the two ways this math can break: a negative price (meaningless) and a zero or negative package size (undefined division). Every other combination of non-negative prices and positive sizes produces a finite, well-defined comparison.

A worked example.

Example

This is NIST's own textbook illustration of why unit pricing matters. A 32-ounce bottle of ketchup costs $4.99; a smaller 14-ounce bottle costs $3.19. Dividing each price by its size gives a unit price of 4.99 / 32 = $0.155938 per ounce for the large bottle and 3.19 / 14 = $0.227857 per ounce for the small bottle. The large bottle is cheaper per ounce even though it costs more at the register. The calculator reports a savings of roughly $0.0719 per ounce and a percent-cheaper figure of about 31.6 percent — the small bottle is nearly a third more expensive per ounce than the large one. A shopper buying the small bottle because '$3.19 is less than $4.99' would be paying a real, quantifiable premium for the smaller size, exactly the gap NIST's Office of Weights and Measures designed unit-price shelf labels to expose.

The percentage answers a relative question — how much more expensive, proportionally, is the losing option — which is the more useful figure for spotting a marketing claim like 'family size — better value!' that may not actually hold up once you divide price by quantity.
What happens if the two packages have exactly the same unit price?
The calculator reports a tie: both unit prices are equal, the savings-per-unit figure is exactly zero, the percent-cheaper figure is zero, and the plain-language result states that the two packages cost the same per unit. In that case the choice between them comes down to something other than price — package size that better matches how much you'll use before it expires, storage space, or brand preference.
Can I use this for anything other than groceries?
Yes. The math is unit-agnostic: it works for any two prices measured against any two shared quantities — laundry detergent priced per load, printer paper priced per sheet, bulk hardware priced per piece, or subscription tiers priced per included unit of some service. As long as both packages are expressed in the same unit and you have a price and a quantity for each, the comparison is valid.
