This is especially useful for meat and produce, which are commonly priced per pound at U.S. grocery stores and butcher counters but sold in package weights (like a 2.5 lb tray or an 800 g imported item) that don't make the per-pound cost obvious at a glance.
Each item's total price is divided by its quantity converted to pounds, using standard NIST-published conversion factors (16 oz per lb, about 2.2046 lb per kg). The calculator then reports which item is the better value per pound. A price per pound calculator converts a purchase's total price and quantity — in any unit — into a standardized dollars-per-pound figure, so two differently sized or differently labeled items can be compared directly. It's especially useful for meat and produce, where U.S. shoppers conventionally think in price per pound even when a specific package is labeled in ounces, kilograms, or grams.

The formula.
Each item's quantity is converted to pounds using standard factors (1 lb = 16 oz, 1 kg ≈ 2.2046 lb, 1 g ≈ 0.0022 lb), then price per pound is total price divided by that converted quantity. For 2.5 lb of an item at $11.25, price per pound is 11.25/2.5 = $4.50. For 800 g of another item at $6.40, the quantity in pounds is 800 × 0.00220462262185 ≈ 1.7637 lb, so price per pound is 6.40/1.7637 ≈ $3.63 — the second item is the better value per pound, despite its total price being lower to begin with, which alone would not tell you which is the better deal.
A worked example.
A shopper is comparing 2.5 lb of ground beef priced at $11.25 against an 800 g package of chicken breast priced at $6.40. Ground beef works out to 11.25/2.5 = $4.50 per pound. Converting 800 grams to pounds (800 x 0.00220462262185 = 1.7637 lb), the chicken breast works out to 6.40/1.7637 = approximately $3.63 per pound -- making the chicken the better value per pound, even though it isn't obvious from the sticker prices or package sizes alone.
