Background.

Click-through rate, usually shortened to CTR, is the share of served impressions that produced a click. Google Ads states the relationship directly: divide clicks by impressions. If an ad was shown 5,500 times and recorded 500 clicks, its CTR is 500 ÷ 5,500 = 0.090909 as a decimal, or 9.0909% after multiplying by one hundred.

This calculator solves all three sides of that identity. Use the CTR mode for observed reporting: enter clicks and impressions. Use the clicks mode for planning: enter impressions and a target percentage to estimate clicks. Use the impressions mode to estimate how many served impressions correspond to a click target at a chosen rate. Every mode returns all three terms, the decimal rate, impressions without a click and clicks per thousand impressions.

Counts need a consistent reporting source. An impression is not automatically a unique person, and platforms have detailed rules for when a served ad is counted, how repeated exposure is handled and how invalid traffic is filtered. A click also follows the platform's event definition. Mixing clicks from one system with impressions from another can produce a mathematically correct ratio that describes no actual campaign. Use counts from the same report, placement, attribution window and date range.

The percentage form is a display convention. A decimal CTR of 0.025 is 2.5%, so enter 2.5 in the percentage field. The calculator converts it internally by dividing by 100. Clicks per thousand impressions is the same rate on another scale: a 2.5% CTR corresponds to 25 expected clicks per 1,000 impressions. It is not CPM and contains no spend.

For the simple click-through ratio, clicks cannot exceed impressions and CTR is bounded from 0% to 100%. Some analytics products expose “all clicks,” interactions or multiple click events per served impression, which can exceed that boundary. Those are legitimate platform metrics but are not this definition. Select a one-click-per-impression click count or use the platform's own named interaction-rate formula rather than forcing it into CTR.

A high CTR is not automatically a successful campaign. The click may be irrelevant, accidental or expensive, and the landing page may fail to convert. Conversely, a brand or awareness placement can serve its purpose without a click. CTR measures response to the creative and placement at the top of a funnel; CPC adds spend, conversion rate adds completed actions, and return metrics add value. Read those together.

Benchmarks are especially easy to misuse. Search, display, social, email and video differ in intent and interface. Brand queries differ from generic queries; a remarketing audience differs from cold prospecting; mobile placements differ from desktop. Even within one platform, campaign objective and creative format change the denominator and user behavior. This page deliberately does not label a result good or bad or embed a transient industry average.

When solving forward, calculated clicks can be fractional. That does not claim half a person clicked; it is an expected planning value. Actual reported counts are whole events. The fractional output is useful when comparing scenarios or estimating volume, and rounding can be done only after deciding whether a budget requires a conservative ceiling or a forecast uses an expected mean.

All arithmetic runs in Decimal.js and rounds only at the declared ten-decimal output boundary. Guards reject negative counts, division by zero, rates above 100% and clicks above impressions. That makes invalid assumptions visible instead of returning an impressive but meaningless percentage.

What is ctr calculator?

CTR is a response-rate metric: clicks divided by served impressions for a consistent reporting scope. It can be written as a decimal or percentage. Rearranging the identity estimates clicks from impressions and a target CTR, or impressions from clicks and a nonzero target CTR. It does not measure unique people, viewability, conversions, spend or revenue, and it is only comparable when the underlying click and impression definitions match.

How to use this calculator.

The formula.

CTR (%) = clicks ÷ impressions × 100

In CTR mode, divide clicks by impressions to get a decimal rate, then multiply by 100 for the percentage. Impressions must be positive and clicks cannot exceed them in this model. In clicks mode, divide the entered percentage by 100 and multiply by impressions. In impressions mode, divide clicks by the nonzero decimal rate.

The remaining outputs are direct views of the same identity. Non-click impressions equal impressions minus clicks. Clicks per thousand equal the decimal rate multiplied by 1,000. No spend, viewability or conversion assumption is added.

The calculation retains fractional planning counts. A target of 2.5% across 333 impressions produces an expectation of 8.325 clicks; actual campaigns will report a whole count, but prematurely rounding every scenario would bias aggregation. Round for operational purchasing only after selecting the appropriate policy.

A worked example.

Example

Company Alpha records 500 clicks from 5,500 served impressions. Divide 500 by 5,500 to get 0.0909090909. Multiply by 100 to express the rate as 9.0909090909%. The campaign therefore produces about 90.9091 clicks per 1,000 impressions, while 5,000 of the reported impressions have no click. The calculation says nothing about conversions or spend; those require separate numerator and cost data.

How do I calculate CTR?
Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. For 25 clicks from 1,000 impressions, CTR is 25÷1,000×100 = 2.5%.
What counts as an impression?
Use the reporting platform's served-impression definition. It is not necessarily a unique person or a viewable impression, so keep clicks and impressions from the same report.
How do I estimate clicks from CTR?
Convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply by impressions. At 2.5% across 10,000 impressions, expected clicks are 0.025×10,000 = 250.
How many impressions do I need for a click target?

Can CTR exceed 100%?
Not under this one-click-per-impression definition. A platform metric above 100% is likely counting multiple interactions or all clicks and should use that platform's named formula.
What is a good CTR?
There is no universal threshold. Compare like-for-like campaigns on the same platform, format, audience, objective, market and time period, then read CTR alongside conversion and cost outcomes.
Is CTR the same as conversion rate?
No. CTR measures clicks per impression. Conversion rate measures completed actions against clicks, sessions or another stated opportunity denominator.
Why can planned clicks be fractional?
The result is an expected value across a future volume, not an observed event count. Keep the fraction for scenario math and round only when making an operational whole-count decision.
