Background.

Engagement rate is one numerator over a contested denominator. Everybody agrees the top of the fraction is interactions — likes, comments, shares, saves. Almost nobody agrees on the bottom, and the choice moves the answer by more than most people expect. Take the worked example on this page: a month of 8 posts collecting 4,770 interactions. Divided by 12,000 followers it is a 39.75% engagement rate. Divided by the 26,500 accounts actually reached it is 18.00%. Divided by 41,300 impressions it is 11.55%. Same month, same posts, same interactions — three numbers spanning a factor of 3.4. None of them is wrong; each answers a different question, and a rate quoted without its denominator is not a measurement.

This calculator therefore reports all three every time, and the dropdown only chooses which one becomes the headline. That is a deliberate design decision: an engagement rate travels — it gets copied into a deck, pasted into a pitch, compared against a benchmark someone else computed a different way. Showing the three together makes the substitution visible instead of invisible.

The three denominators are not equally defensible. Reach is the count of unique accounts that actually saw the content; the MRC's Social Media Measurement Guidelines define it as "the total unique (deduplicated) count of users exposed to organic (unpaid) content or advertising." Everybody in that denominator had the opportunity to engage, which is what a rate is supposed to measure. Impressions counts every time the content was on screen, so the same account can appear many times; because a person can usually only like a post once, the impressions rate is arithmetically forced to sit at or below the reach rate. In the worked example, frequency is 1.56 impressions per account reached, and that single fact is the whole gap between 18.00% and 11.55%.

Followers is the denominator most tools quote and the one the MRC is most direct about. A count based on "a subset of platform users or a network such as friends, followers or fans" is what the guidelines call Potential Reach, and they state it "should be limited to use as a planning metric only (not a currency measurement)." The practical problem is that a follower-based rate mixes content performance with audience size and platform distribution. An account whose posts reach only a fifth of its followers is scored as though every follower saw the post. Grow the audience without growing distribution and the rate falls even if the content performs identically. The reach-rate output on this page — reach as a percentage of followers — tells you how badly that distortion bites: it is 220.83% in the worked example, meaning the content travelled well beyond the audience, and the follower rate consequently overstates rather than understates.

Two scope limits belong beside the number rather than buried below it. First, reach is account-deduplicated, not person-deduplicated. The IAB and MRC's Audience Reach Measurement Guidelines make this a compliance requirement: a measurement organisation "does not misrepresent machine-based measurements as people-based measurements." Platform "accounts reached" is a machine-based figure, so one human with two accounts is two units of reach. Second, if your figures cover more than one post you must use the platform's period-level reach, not the sum of per-post reach. Adding per-post reach double-counts every account that saw two posts, inflates the denominator and depresses the rate — and it is the single most common way a multi-post engagement rate goes wrong.

Finally, the numerator is a policy choice too. This page sums likes, comments, shares and saves, which map onto the MRC's Interaction and Content Redistribution families. Some platforms report profile visits, link clicks, video views or follows as engagement; adding those raises every rate on the page. Whatever you include, include it consistently and publish the list — an engagement rate is only comparable to another engagement rate built the same way.

What is engagement rate calculator?

Engagement rate expresses audience interaction with a piece of content as a percentage of the audience that was exposed to it. The MASB Universal Marketing Dictionary defines engagement itself as "a general term for measures of the rate of audience interaction with media content as exhibited through various actions," measured on social media through "likes, comments, mentions and shares." The MRC's Social Media Measurement Guidelines organise those actions into three families: Interaction (clicks, saves, comments, likes, replies), Content Redistribution (shares, re-posts, re-blogs, embeds) and Advocacy and Influence. This calculator's numerator is likes plus comments plus shares plus saves — one metric from each of the first two families, and the set that essentially every major platform reports. Three denominators are in common use and they answer different questions. Reach — the deduplicated count of accounts exposed — answers "of the people who saw it, what share acted?" Impressions — the count of times the content was on screen — answers "per exposure, how often did somebody act?" Followers answers "relative to the audience I have assembled, how much interaction did this generate?", and is the only one of the three whose denominator includes accounts that never saw the content at all. There is no accounting standard and no regulator here: engagement rate is an operational metric whose value depends entirely on a definition the publisher chooses, which is why this page reports all three figures and labels the one it puts in the headline.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Decide what your figures cover: one post, or a whole period. For a single post, leave the post count at 1 and take reach and impressions straight from that post's insights.
  2. For a period, set the post count to the number of posts published and take reach and impressions from the platform's period-level report. Do not add up per-post reach — the same account appears in several posts and the sum is not a deduplicated figure.
  3. Enter likes, comments, shares and saves. Set any metric your platform does not report to 0, and note that omission whenever you publish the rate.
  4. Enter accounts reached, impressions and followers. Impressions can never be lower than reach; if the calculator rejects your pair, the two figures are from different date ranges or different post sets.
  5. Choose the denominator for the headline. Reach is the default and the most defensible; followers is what most third-party tools quote, so pick it when you need a number comparable to theirs.
  6. Read the denominator note directly under the headline. It says in words which basis the number uses, so the figure survives being pasted into a slide.
  7. Compare the three rates against each other before you compare any of them against a benchmark. If the frequency figure is well above 1.0, an impressions-based rate will look poor for reasons that have nothing to do with the content.
  8. Track one basis over time rather than switching. A series that changes denominator mid-way is not a series.

The formula.

ER = (L + C + S + B) ⁄ D × 100 ; D ∈ {reach, impressions, followers}

The numerator is a simple sum: engagements = likes + comments + shares + saves. The rate is that sum divided by whichever denominator you select, times 100. Nothing else in the calculation is negotiable; everything interesting is in the denominator. Because impressions ≥ reach always holds — an impression is logged every time the content is on screen and reach counts the unique accounts behind those impressions — the impressions rate can never exceed the reach rate. Their ratio is exactly the frequency: ER(reach) ÷ ER(impressions) = impressions ÷ reach. In the worked example, 18.00% ÷ 11.5496368039% = 1.558490566, which is 41,300 ÷ 26,500 to the last digit. The follower rate has no such fixed relationship to the other two. It sits above the reach rate whenever reach exceeds followers and below it whenever it does not; equivalently, the follower rate exceeds the reach rate exactly when the reach rate output is above 100%. In the worked example reach is 26,500 against 12,000 followers — a reach rate of 220.83% — so the follower-based figure of 39.75% is the highest of the three. At this page's default single-post figures the ordering reverses: reach of 8,400 against 12,000 followers is a reach rate of 70%, and the follower rate of 9.1666666667% sits below the reach rate of 13.0952380952%. The average per-post rate divides engagements by the number of posts before dividing by the denominator, so with a period-level denominator it is a per-post average measured against period exposure; it is comparable across your own periods but not against a single-post rate. On rounding: every intermediate quantity in this module is carried at full arbitrary-precision decimal width, and rounding happens once, at the return boundary, to ten decimal places. No sub-total is rounded first — in particular the engagement total is never rounded before division, and the three rates are each computed from the unrounded sum rather than from one another. There are no thresholds, no bands and no classification steps in this calculator, so there is nothing here that can be right in the middle of a range and wrong at its edge.

A worked example.

Example

A brand account with 12,000 followers publishes 8 posts in a month. The platform reports 26,500 accounts reached for the month and 41,300 impressions. Across the eight posts the content collects 3,400 likes, 412 comments, 268 shares and 690 saves. The numerator is the sum: 3,400 + 412 + 268 + 690 = 4,770 engagements. Now divide it three ways. On reach — the default and the calculator's headline here — 4,770 ÷ 26,500 = 0.18 exactly, so the engagement rate is 18.00%. On impressions, 4,770 ÷ 41,300 = 11.5496368039%. On followers, 4,770 ÷ 12,000 = 39.75%. The spread between the highest and lowest reading is a factor of 3.4, and every one of those three numbers would be reported by somebody as "our engagement rate". The gap between the reach figure and the impressions figure is not a judgement call — it is frequency. The account served 41,300 impressions to 26,500 accounts, so frequency is 1.558490566 impressions per account reached. Dividing the reach rate by the frequency recovers the impressions rate exactly: 18.00% ÷ (41,300 ÷ 26,500) = 11.5496368039%. Whenever frequency rises, an impressions-based rate falls, even if not one thing about the content or the audience response has changed. The follower figure is high for the opposite reason. Reach of 26,500 against 12,000 followers is a reach rate of 220.83%: this content travelled well beyond the account's own audience, most likely through the 268 shares and platform recommendation. The follower denominator ignores all of that and divides by 12,000, so it credits the account for reaching people it never had. This is the direction most people do not expect — the usual complaint about follower-based rates is that they understate performance because most followers never see the post, and that is what happens at this page's default single-post figures, where reach of 8,400 against 12,000 followers gives a reach rate of 70% and the follower rate of 9.1666666667% sits below the reach rate of 13.0952380952%. Follower-based rates do not consistently understate or overstate; they are simply measuring something else. Per post, the month averages 4,770 ÷ 8 = 596.25 engagements, which against the period reach of 26,500 is an average per-post rate of 2.25%. That figure is comparable with the same account's other months. It is not comparable with a single post's 18% rate, because the denominator is a month of reach rather than one post's reach — a distinction worth stating explicitly on any slide that carries both.

Which denominator should I use — reach, impressions or followers?
Use reach if you are judging the content, because everybody in that denominator had the chance to engage. Use impressions if you are judging paid delivery efficiency, since it charges you for every exposure served. Use followers only when you need a number comparable to a third-party influencer tool, and label it as such. The MRC is unusually direct on this point: a count based on "a subset of platform users or a network such as friends, followers or fans" is Potential Reach, which "should be limited to use as a planning metric only (not a currency measurement)." In the worked example the three answers are 18.00%, 11.55% and 39.75% for the same month, so the honest practice is to state which one you used every time you quote it.
Why is my engagement rate on impressions always lower than on reach?
Because impressions is always the larger denominator. An impression is logged every time the content is on screen; reach counts the unique accounts behind those impressions. An account that scrolls past a post three times generates three impressions and one unit of reach — but can normally only like it once. The ratio between the two rates is exactly the frequency: in the worked example, 41,300 impressions to 26,500 accounts is a frequency of 1.558490566, and dividing the reach rate by that frequency — 18.00% ÷ (41,300 ÷ 26,500) — returns 11.5496368039%, the impressions rate exactly. If frequency is close to 1.0 the two rates nearly coincide; on a heavily repeated paid campaign frequency can exceed 5 and the impressions rate will look terrible for reasons that have nothing to do with the creative.
Can engagement rate be over 100%?
On reach or impressions it is very unusual but not impossible, because one account can leave several comments while counting once in reach. On followers it is entirely routine for content that travels: any post whose reach exceeds its follower count can exceed 100% without anything being wrong. The worked example is halfway there — reach of 26,500 against 12,000 followers is a reach rate of 220.83%, and if those 4,770 engagements had been 13,000 the follower-based rate would have been over 100% while the reach-based rate stayed near 50%. A rate above 100% is a signal that the denominator is not the population that saw the content, not a signal that the numbers are broken.
My figures cover a whole month. What do I put in the reach field?
The platform's period-level reach for that month, not the sum of each post's reach. Reach is defined as a deduplicated count, so adding eight posts' reach counts an account once for every post it saw. That inflates the denominator, depresses the rate, and produces a figure that cannot be compared with anything. Set the post-count field to the number of posts and the calculator will give you an average per-post rate against the correct period denominator — 2.25% in the worked example. If your platform does not report period-level reach, compute the rate per post and average the rates instead; do not average the denominators.
Should saves, video views, link clicks and profile visits count as engagement?
There is no standard that settles it, so it is your call — but it has to be a disclosed call. The MRC's guidelines list a wide inventory of qualifying actions across three families: Interaction (clicks, saves, comments, likes, replies, downloads, time-spent metrics), Content Redistribution (shares, re-posts, re-blogs, embeds) and Advocacy and Influence. This page sums likes, comments, shares and saves because those four are reported by essentially every major platform and are cheap to verify. Adding video views raises every rate on the page substantially, because views are far more numerous than deliberate interactions; adding link clicks raises it a little. Whatever you choose, apply it to every period you compare and publish the list alongside the number.
Is "accounts reached" the same as people reached?
No, and the distinction is a formal compliance requirement rather than a quibble. The IAB and MRC's Audience Reach Measurement Guidelines separate machine-based measures (unique cookies, browsers, devices) from people-based measures (unique users), and state that a measurement organisation must not "misrepresent machine-based measurements as people-based measurements" and that no "uniques" metric should be reported as Unique Users "without appropriate foundation in a measurement of people." A platform's account-based reach figure deduplicates accounts, not humans: one person with a personal and a work account is two units of reach, and a shared household account is one unit for several people. Treat the reach denominator as accounts, and say "accounts reached" rather than "people reached" when you report it.
What is a good engagement rate?
This page deliberately prints no benchmark, because a defensible cross-account one does not exist. Published benchmarks almost never state their denominator, and as this page demonstrates the same month reads 39.75%, 18.00% or 11.55% depending on that choice alone — a spread far larger than the difference between a good account and a mediocre one. Benchmarks also mix numerator definitions: a figure that counts video views is not comparable with one that counts likes and comments. The comparison that survives scrutiny is against yourself: same numerator, same denominator, same period length, tracked over time, and segmented by format. If you must use an external benchmark, use one that publishes both its numerator list and its denominator, and reproduce that exact definition here before comparing.
Why does my engagement rate fall as my account grows?
Almost always because you are using the follower denominator. A follower-based rate divides by the whole audience while the platform only ever shows the post to a fraction of it, so the rate is really engagements ÷ followers = (engagements ÷ reach) × (reach ÷ followers). The second term is the reach-rate output on this page, and on most platforms it falls as an account grows: distribution does not scale one-for-one with audience size. Content performance can be flat or improving while the follower-based rate declines purely because the reach rate is sliding. Switch the headline to reach and check whether the reach-based rate has actually moved before concluding anything about the content.
