What is kra vat calculator?
Kenya Value Added Tax is an indirect tax on taxable goods and taxable services supplied in Kenya or imported into Kenya. In calculator terms, VAT is a percentage applied to a taxable value. The formula.
VAT-exclusive arithmetic starts with the taxable value. If the net amount is N and the VAT rate as a decimal is r, VAT is N * r. The gross amount is the original taxable value plus the tax, so G = N + N*r. Factoring the net amount gives G = N*(1+r). This is why a 16% rate turns KSh 12,000 into KSh 13,920: the multiplier is 1.16. The VAT portion is KSh 1,920, not because 16 is added as a number, but because 16% means 16 per 100 of the taxable base.
VAT-inclusive arithmetic reverses the same relationship. If the gross price G already includes VAT, the net amount is not G * (1 - r). That shortcut is wrong because the 16% was charged on the net amount, not on the gross amount. The correct recovery is N = G / (1+r). Once net is recovered, VAT is G - N. For example, a VAT-inclusive price of KSh 13,920 divided by 1.16 is KSh 12,000. The VAT amount is KSh 13,920 minus KSh 12,000, or KSh 1,920. This inverse calculation is the main place users make mistakes.
The input-output mode adds an accounting layer. Output VAT is the VAT charged on taxable sales. Input VAT is VAT paid on eligible business purchases and supported by the documentation KRA requires. Dimensional analysis is simple but useful: every monetary term is in Kenya shillings, while the rate is converted from a percent into a dimensionless decimal. A worked example.
Suppose a registered Kenya business has a taxable net sales price of KSh 12,000 and the general VAT rate is 16%. First convert the percentage to a decimal: 16 divided by 100 equals 0.16. Multiply the net sales price by 0.16 to get output VAT. KSh 12,000 times 0.16 equals KSh 1,920. Add that VAT to the net sales price to get the customer-facing VAT-inclusive selling price of KSh 13,920. Now account for eligible input VAT already paid on the related purchase. The example uses KSh 1,600 of input VAT. VAT payable is output VAT minus input VAT, so KSh 1,920 minus KSh 1,600 equals KSh 320. The result means the invoice shows KSh 13,920 to the customer, but the net VAT liability from this simplified input-output example is KSh 320.
