A cat food portion calculator estimates how many calories, and how many cups, your cat needs per day, starting from a physiological baseline rather than a generic feeding-chart guess. This calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula published in the WSAVA Global Nutrition Toolkit and the Pet Nutrition Alliance's calorie-needs guide: RER (kcal/day) equals 70 times bodyweight in kilograms raised to the 0.75 power, the same equation used for dogs, because it reflects a general mammalian relationship between body surface area and metabolic rate rather than a species-specific constant. RER on its own only estimates the energy a cat burns lying still at a comfortable temperature; it is not what most cats should actually eat. To get a realistic daily target, called the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER), this calculator multiplies RER by a life-stage/activity factor drawn from the same published guidance, and the feline factor table differs meaningfully from the canine one: 0.8-1.0x RER for a cat on an active weight-loss plan, 1.0x for an overweight-prone or inactive adult, 1.2x for a typical neutered adult, 1.4x for an intact adult, 2-3x for a pregnant queen, 2-6x for a lactating queen (the wide range reflects litter size), and 2-3x for a growing kitten.
Notice that every one of those feline multipliers sits lower than the equivalent canine multiplier — a neutered adult cat needs 1.2x RER versus 1.6x RER for a neutered adult dog, for example. That is a real, published difference in the two species' typical maintenance-energy scaling, not a rounding choice, and it is one reason a cat cannot simply be fed "dog food math" scaled down by body weight. The calculator deliberately stops at calories and asks you for your food's own kcal-per-cup value rather than assuming one, because "cups" is a volume measurement and volume-to-calorie ratios vary across cat foods — dry kibble commonly runs 300-450 kcal per cup, but the exact figure depends on fat content and formula. There is no universal cups-per-day answer without that label figure, so this tool asks for it explicitly and never guesses.
AAHA's 2010 Nutritional Assessment Guidelines for Dogs and Cats frame this kind of calculation as a starting point for a conversation, not a fixed prescription: individual animals can vary from the predicted values by as much as 50%, so the guidelines recommend using body condition score — not just a formula — to adjust the actual amount fed up or down over time. This is especially relevant for cats, where obesity is common and where indoor, low-activity lifestyles can push real-world energy needs below the "typical activity" factors this calculator uses by default. This calculator gives you a defensible, transparent starting number; monitoring your cat's weight and body condition over the following weeks is what turns that starting number into the right number for your specific cat.
What is cat food portion calculator?
Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the number of calories an animal burns per day doing nothing but the essential work of staying alive — breathing, circulating blood, digesting, regulating temperature — while completely at rest in a comfortable environment. It is calculated the same way for cats and dogs: RER = 70 x (bodyweight in kg)^0.75. Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) scales that resting baseline up to reflect a cat's actual daily activity and physiological state, using a multiplier that veterinary nutrition guidance publishes specifically for cats — and the feline multipliers are consistently lower than the equivalent canine ones, reflecting cats' typically lower activity level and different metabolic profile as small obligate carnivores. This calculator implements both steps and then converts the resulting calorie target into cups of food, using a food-specific kcal-per-cup figure you provide, because that conversion cannot be done accurately without knowing the actual energy density of your cat's specific food.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter your cat's current healthy weight (use target/ideal weight, not current weight, if your cat is on a weight-loss plan) and choose kg or lb.
- Select the life-stage/activity category that best matches your cat. Most healthy, indoor, neutered adult cats fall into the "neutered adult" or "overweight-prone/inactive" category.
- Enter your food's kcal-per-cup value from the bag's label or the manufacturer's website — this step cannot be skipped, because it varies by brand and formula.
- Enter how many meals you feed per day.
- Read the primary result, Maintenance Energy Requirement, in calories per day, and the cups-per-day and cups-per-meal breakdown below it.
- Re-check your cat's body condition score every few weeks and adjust the life-stage/activity selection (or the raw amount fed) if your cat is gaining or losing weight faster than intended.
The formula.
Step 1 converts weight to kilograms if pounds were entered, using the exact NIST conversion factor 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Step 2 computes RER = 70 x (weight in kg)^0.75. For a 4.5 kg cat, that is 70 x 4.5^0.75 = 70 x 3.0897... = 216.28 kcal/day. Step 3 multiplies RER by the selected life-stage/activity factor to get MER. For a typical neutered adult, the factor is 1.2, giving 216.28 x 1.2 = 259.53 kcal/day. Step 4 divides MER by the food's kcal-per-cup value to get cups per day; at 300 kcal/cup, that is 259.53 / 300 = 0.87 cups/day. Step 5 divides both the daily calorie total and the daily cup total by the number of meals per day to get per-meal figures. The factor table itself (weight loss 0.8-1.0x, overweight-prone/inactive 1.0x, neutered adult 1.2x, intact adult 1.4x, pregnant 2-3x, lactating 2-6x, growth 2-3x) comes from the Pet Nutrition Alliance's published MER-factor table, whose methodology is aligned with the WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee's guidance and echoes the AAHA Nutritional Assessment Guidelines for Dogs and Cats (Baldwin et al., 2010). Where the source publishes a range rather than one number (weight loss, pregnant, lactating, growth), this calculator uses the range's midpoint as a reasonable single starting estimate and states the full published range in the selector label so you can see how much room for adjustment exists.
A worked example.
A 4.5 kg neutered adult cat is entered, fed a food that provides 300 kcal per cup, split across 2 meals a day. RER = 70 x 4.5^0.75 = 216.28 kcal/day. Applying the neutered-adult factor of 1.2x gives a Maintenance Energy Requirement of 216.28 x 1.2 = 259.53 kcal/day. Dividing by 300 kcal/cup gives 0.87 cups of food per day. Split across 2 meals, that is 129.77 kcal and 0.43 cups per meal. If this cat were intact instead of neutered, the factor would rise to 1.4x, pushing MER up to about 302.79 kcal/day (roughly 1.01 cups/day) — a reminder that neuter status alone shifts a cat's calorie needs by more than 15% at the same body weight.
