The formula.

MER = 70 × kg^0.75 × factor

Step 1 converts weight to kilograms if pounds were entered, using the exact NIST conversion factor 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Step 2 computes RER = 70 x (weight in kg)^0.75. For a 22 kg dog, that is 70 x 22^0.75 = 70 x 10.1535... = 711.07 kcal/day. Step 3 multiplies RER by the selected life-stage/activity factor to get MER. A worked example.

Example

A 22 kg neutered adult dog is entered, fed a food that provides 350 kcal per cup, split across 2 meals a day. RER = 70 x 22^0.75 = 711.07 kcal/day. Applying the neutered-adult factor of 1.6x gives a Maintenance Energy Requirement of 711.07 x 1.6 = 1,137.72 kcal/day. Dividing by 350 kcal/cup gives 3.25 cups of food per day. Split across 2 meals, that is 568.86 kcal and 1.63 cups per meal. If this dog were intact instead of neutered, the factor would rise to 1.8x, pushing MER up to about 1,279.93 kcal/day (roughly 3.66 cups/day) — a reminder that neuter status alone shifts a dog's calorie needs by more than 10% at the same body weight and activity level.

Why does this calculator ask for kcal per cup instead of just telling me the cups?
Because "a cup" is a volume measurement, and dog foods pack very different amounts of energy into that same volume depending on fat content, ingredient density, and kibble size. A calorie-dense performance formula can contain 500 kcal per cup, while a weight-management formula can sit closer to 250-300 kcal per cup — a nearly two-fold difference. My dog is overweight — should I use its current weight or its target weight?
Use the target (ideal) weight, and select the "weight loss / obese" activity category, not current weight with a normal-activity category. Feeding for current overweight bodyweight at a normal-activity factor will simply maintain the excess weight rather than reduce it. If you are unsure what your dog's ideal weight should be, a veterinary body-condition-score assessment is the standard way to establish a target before starting a weight-loss feeding plan.
How accurate is the RER/MER formula for an individual dog?

Body condition — how easily you can feel your dog's ribs, whether there is a visible waist from above, and how the abdomen tucks up from the side — is the practical day-to-day check that tells you whether the estimate is right for your individual dog. If your dog is gaining or losing weight faster than intended over several weeks, reduce or increase the daily amount by roughly 10% and reassess, rather than switching life-stage categories.
