If your dog has eaten chocolate, the single most useful action you can take is to call your vet, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435, or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661, and have this calculator's numbers ready to describe what happened — not to decide for yourself whether the situation is safe. What this tool does is reproduce the same dose-estimation math that ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) toxicologists use internally, published by Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, DVM, PhD, in a 2001 ASPCA APCC toxicology brief: it multiplies the amount of chocolate your dog ate by that chocolate type's published theobromine and caffeine content (in milligrams per ounce), adds the two together into a combined "methylxanthine" dose, and divides by your dog's bodyweight in kilograms to get a dose in mg/kg.
Chocolate toxicity in dogs comes from methylxanthines — mainly theobromine, with a smaller contribution from caffeine — compounds dogs metabolize far more slowly than humans do. Different chocolate products contain wildly different concentrations: the ASPCA APCC's published table lists white chocolate at just 0.25 mg theobromine per ounce (essentially negligible), milk chocolate at 58 mg/oz, dark or semisweet chocolate at 130 mg/oz, semisweet chocolate chips at 138 mg/oz, unsweetened baker's chocolate at 393 mg/oz, and dry cocoa powder at a striking 737 mg/oz — meaning an ounce of baking cocoa powder can contain nearly 3,000 times the theobromine of the same weight of white chocolate. That is why chocolate type matters as much as quantity, and why this calculator asks for both.
Based on ASPCA APCC's own clinical case experience, mild signs — vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, restlessness — become likely around 20 mg/kg of combined theobromine and caffeine. Cardiotoxic effects, including a racing heart and abnormal heart rhythm, become likely around 40-50 mg/kg. Seizures become likely at 60 mg/kg and above. These same numbers are independently corroborated by the current Merck Veterinary Manual's chocolate toxicosis reference. None of these thresholds are a hard line between "fine" and "an emergency" — individual dogs, especially those with existing heart conditions, small body size, or other health issues, can react at lower doses, and the ASPCA APCC's own reported lethal-dose range for milk chocolate (roughly 1 ounce of milk chocolate per pound of bodyweight) sits well above the seizure threshold, illustrating how much room for individual variation exists even within a single published source.
That is precisely why this page exists to point you toward professional help rather than to let you self-manage the situation. A calculator can do arithmetic faster than you can by hand at 2 a.m., but it cannot examine your dog, ask about symptoms already present, or account for your dog's individual health history — a veterinarian or a poison-control toxicologist can, and they are the ones who should be making the actual treatment decision.
What is dog chocolate toxicity calculator?
Chocolate toxicosis is poisoning caused by methylxanthines — primarily theobromine, with a smaller amount of caffeine — compounds found in cacao that dogs metabolize much more slowly than humans, allowing the compounds to build up to toxic levels in a dog's system. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) and the Merck Veterinary Manual both describe a dose-response relationship: as the amount of theobromine and caffeine per kilogram of a dog's bodyweight increases, so does the severity of clinical signs, moving from mild gastrointestinal upset through cardiac effects to, at the highest doses, seizures and potentially death. This calculator estimates that combined dose from the chocolate type and amount you enter and reports it against the same clinical-sign thresholds ASPCA APCC toxicologists use, strictly as an educational estimate — the appropriate response to any chocolate ingestion, at any estimated dose, is to contact a veterinarian or a pet poison hotline rather than to wait and see.

- Enter your dog's weight and select pounds or kilograms.
- Select the chocolate type your dog ate. If you are not sure, or it was a mix, choose the most concentrated type involved (cocoa powder or baker's chocolate are the most concentrated; white chocolate is the least).
- Enter the amount eaten, in ounces or grams. If you don't know the exact amount, estimate generously on the high side.
- Read the estimated dose and the plain-language tier explanation, then use that information when you talk to your vet or the poison hotline — not as a decision about whether to call them.
- Regardless of the number shown, if your dog is already showing symptoms (vomiting, restlessness, a racing heart, tremors, or seizures), treat this as an emergency and seek immediate veterinary care.
The formula.
The calculation follows the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center's own published methodology (Gwaltney-Brant, 2001) exactly. Step 1: convert the amount eaten to grams if entered in ounces (1 oz = 28.349523125 g, the exact NIST conversion factor). Step 2: look up the chocolate type's theobromine and caffeine content in milligrams per ounce from the ASPCA APCC's published Table 1 (white 0.25/0.85, milk 58/6, dark-sweet 130/20, semisweet chips 138/22, baker's unsweetened 393/47, dry cocoa powder 737/70 — theobromine/caffeine mg per oz), and convert to mg per gram. Step 3: multiply the amount eaten (in grams) by each per-gram rate to get total theobromine and total caffeine ingested, in milligrams. Step 4: add theobromine and caffeine together into a single combined methylxanthine total — this is the ASPCA APCC's own convention, since both compounds contribute to toxicity and the published clinical thresholds are set against the combined figure, not theobromine alone. Step 5: convert the dog's weight to kilograms if entered in pounds (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, exact NIST factor), then divide total methylxanthine (mg) by weight (kg) to get the dose in mg/kg. That dose is then compared against the same three ASPCA APCC clinical thresholds described above: 20 mg/kg (mild signs), 40-50 mg/kg (cardiotoxic), and 60+ mg/kg (seizure risk).
A worked example.
This worked example reproduces the ASPCA APCC's own published case study exactly (Gwaltney-Brant, 2001): Raster, a 9 kg border terrier, ate 7.2 ounces of dark, sweet chocolate (a mix of solid pieces and dark-chocolate-covered candy, calculated worst-case as if it were all solid dark chocolate). Dark chocolate contains 130 mg theobromine and 20 mg caffeine per ounce, for 150 mg combined methylxanthine per ounce. 7.2 oz x 150 mg/oz = 1,080 mg total methylxanthine (936 mg theobromine plus 144 mg caffeine). Dividing by Raster's 9 kg bodyweight gives 1,080 / 9 = 120 mg/kg — double the ASPCA APCC's own seizure-risk threshold of 60 mg/kg. The source material concludes that at this level, the dog "is in danger of developing serious clinical signs if he is not promptly treated," and describes the case as one requiring immediate veterinary decontamination and supportive care, not a wait-and-see approach at home.
