Background.

Free throw percentage is the simplest statistic in basketball: made free throws divided by attempted free throws. Both Basketball-Reference and NBA.com's official glossary give it as FT / FTA with no adjustments of any kind. What this calculator adds is the question people actually ask after seeing the number — how do I fix it? Alongside the percentage you get the count of misses, the points those misses cost (exactly one each, since NBA Rule 5 scores a free throw at one point), and a target planner that works out the smallest number of free throws you would have to make consecutively to lift your percentage to a figure you choose.

That planner is more sobering than most players expect, and it is the reason the tool is worth having. A shooter sitting at 65.7 percent on 782 attempts — Giannis Antetokounmpo's 2023-24 season — needs 290 consecutive makes to reach 75 percent. On a 20-attempt sample the same ten-point improvement takes only a handful. The arithmetic is unforgiving in a specific way: the more attempts already in the denominator, the harder a percentage is to move, which is why in-season correction is so much slower than pre-season correction.

What is free throw percentage calculator?

Free throw percentage, written FT%, is the share of free throw attempts a player or team converts. Basketball-Reference gives the formula as FT / FTA, and NBA.com's official glossary defines it as 'the percentage of free throw attempts that a player or team has made' with the formula FTM / FTA. There are no coefficients, no adjustments and no league constants — it is the most direct statistic in the sport. Free throw attempts are counted as individual shots, so a two-shot foul contributes two attempts and a three-shot foul three, while an and-one contributes one. Each made free throw scores exactly one point under NBA Rule 5, which is why the number of misses equals the number of points left on the table. The statistic matters disproportionately relative to its share of scoring because free throws are the only completely uncontested, untimed shot in basketball and because late-game strategy turns on it: a team trailing will deliberately foul a poor free throw shooter, since two attempts at 50% produce one expected point while an average NBA possession produces about 1.15. That asymmetry is what makes free throw percentage a tactical liability rather than merely a statistical one.

The formula.

The percentage itself is FT / FTA — nothing more.

The target planner is the part with any algebra in it. To reach a target fraction t after n consecutive makes, you need (FT + n) / (FTA + n) >= t. Multiply out: FT + n >= t x FTA + t x n. Collect the n terms: n x (1 - t) >= t x FTA - FT. So n >= (t x FTA - FT) / (1 - t), and since you cannot make a fraction of a free throw the answer is the ceiling of that expression. If your current percentage already meets the target, n is zero.

The formula is undefined at t = 1, because (1 - t) is zero in the denominator — which is the algebra telling you something true: no finite number of makes can raise a percentage below 100% to exactly 100%. The calculator rejects a target of 100% and says so rather than returning an infinity.

Two properties worth noticing. First, n grows with FTA: the same ten-point improvement that takes 5 makes on a 20-attempt sample takes 290 on a 782-attempt one. A season percentage is very hard to move once the sample is large, which is a real argument for fixing mechanics in the off-season. Second, n grows sharply as the target approaches 100%, because of the (1 - t) denominator — going from 75% to 80% is far cheaper than going from 90% to 95%.

A worked example.

Example

Giannis Antetokounmpo's 2023-24 season: 514 made from 782 attempts, giving 514 / 782 = 65.73%. That is 268 misses, and because a free throw is worth exactly one point, 268 points left at the line over one regular season. Suppose he wanted to reach 75%, roughly league-average territory. The planner solves (514 + n) / (782 + n) >= 0.75: the numerator gap is 0.75 x 782 - 514 = 586.5 - 514 = 72.5, the denominator factor is 1 - 0.75 = 0.25, and n = 72.5 / 0.25 = 290. Checking the answer, (514 + 290) / (782 + 290) = 804 / 1072 = exactly 75.0%. Two hundred and ninety consecutive made free throws — more than a third of a season's attempts, without a single miss. That number is why free throw shooting is fixed in the summer and not in March. The gentler comparison is what ten more makes would do: (514 + 10) / (782 + 10) = 524 / 792 = 66.16%, a gain of four tenths of a percentage point for a perfect practice block.

The important consequence is that n grows with your attempt total: lifting a 20-attempt sample from 75% to 80% takes 5 consecutive makes, while lifting a 782-attempt season from 65.7% to 75% takes 290. Percentages get harder to move as the sample grows.
Why does the calculator refuse a target of 100%?
Because the algebra divides by (1 - target), which is zero at 100%. That is not a bug in the formula, it is a true statement: if you have ever missed a free throw, no finite number of subsequent makes will bring your percentage back to exactly 100%. It can approach 100% arbitrarily closely but never reach it. Rather than display an infinity, the calculator asks for a target below 100 and explains why.
Is free throw percentage the same at every level of basketball?
The formula is identical everywhere — a free throw is worth one point in the NBA, WNBA, NCAA and FIBA alike, and FT / FTA has no league-specific terms. What differs is the benchmark and the number of attempts, since bonus rules govern how often teams shoot free throws and those rules vary between leagues. Compare a player against her own league's average rather than against NBA figures.
