Background.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR, is the loaded vehicle weight assigned by its manufacturer. Under 49 CFR 571.3, it is a rating, not a value that an owner or online calculator derives. Copy it from the vehicle certification label, usually on the driver's door or door frame for a light vehicle. The label value governs even if an arithmetic estimate appears to leave more capacity.
This calculator adds the entered ready-to-load vehicle weight, people, cargo, permanently or temporarily added equipment, and trailer tongue or king-pin weight. It then compares that total with the entered GVWR. The maximum-payload arithmetic is simply GVWR minus curb or unloaded weight. NHTSA's required load-limit instructions similarly begin with the vehicle placard and subtract occupant and cargo weights. Its worked example starts with 1,400 lb of capacity and five 150 lb occupants, leaving 650 lb for cargo.
Curb-weight definitions and real scale conditions are not always identical. Factory options, aftermarket bodies, racks, tools, fuel, water and other equipment can change the actual unloaded weight. When accuracy matters, weigh the configured vehicle on a suitable scale and keep the conditions documented. Do not subtract a brochure curb weight from the highest GVWR offered somewhere in a model range.
Inventory the load systematically. Count the driver and every passenger, luggage, tools, removable accessories, aftermarket steps or bumpers, and any material carried in tanks or bins if those weights were not present when the vehicle was weighed. Use actual weights where practical rather than standard adult assumptions. Keep all entries in the same unit; this implementation uses pounds because United States certification labels are required to state the rating in pounds.
Trailer tongue or king-pin load acts on the tow vehicle and consumes payload, so this page includes it separately. That does not check towing capacity or Gross Combination Weight Rating. It also does not calculate load distribution between axles. A vehicle can remain below GVWR while exceeding a front or rear Gross Axle Weight Rating, tire load rating, hitch rating, cargo placard, roof-load limit or another manufacturer restriction.
Load position matters as well as total mass. A remaining total-weight margin cannot be shifted automatically to whichever axle has capacity. Scale individual axle loads in travel condition and compare them with the label's front and rear GAWR values and the fitted tires' ratings at the required inflation. Secure cargo and follow the owner's loading instructions; arithmetic does not assess stability, braking, center of gravity or tie-down adequacy.
A zero or positive remaining result means only that the entered total is at or below the entered GVWR. It is not an approval to operate or tow. A negative result reports the minimum weight that must be removed to get back to GVWR, but additional removal may be necessary to meet axle, tire, hitch or combination limits. Follow the current owner manual and all labels for the exact vehicle.
Never use this calculator to increase, re-rate or replace a manufacturer's certification. Altered, completed, commercial and recreational vehicles can have specific certification and loading requirements. If weights, labels, modifications or load distribution are uncertain, use certified scale readings and consult the vehicle manufacturer, final-stage manufacturer or a qualified vehicle-weight professional before travel.
What is gvwr and payload calculator?
GVWR is the manufacturer-specified loaded weight rating for one vehicle. Payload is the weight carried by that vehicle, including occupants and cargo; transferred trailer load also consumes payload.
How to use this calculator.
- Read GVWR from the exact vehicle's certification label.
- Use a documented actual unloaded or curb weight for the current configuration.
- Add every occupant, cargo item and accessory not already included in that weight.
- Add measured trailer tongue or king-pin weight when towing.
- Treat a negative remaining value as an overload that must be reduced.
- Separately verify GAWR, tires, hitch, towing, combination and placard limits.
The formula.
The page performs transparent addition and subtraction only. It never derives the governing GVWR or assumes that passing this one comparison satisfies any other component or combination rating.
A worked example.
The arithmetic payload difference is 6,400 − 5,000 = 1,400 lb. Subtracting 750 lb of occupants and cargo leaves 650 lb, matching the federal load-instruction example's subtraction.
