Area alone tells only part of the driveway cost story. A driveway is not bought by the square foot the way a rug is; it is bought by volume, because pavement has thickness. The same 480 square foot footprint can need very different amounts of material depending on whether it gets a 4 inch concrete slab, a thinner asphalt surface over a compacted base, or a deeper gravel section. This calculator is valid for early-stage material and cost planning across concrete, asphalt, and gravel driveways of ordinary residential scale. It does not design pavement structure, subgrade preparation, drainage, reinforcement, or long-term durability — those depend on soil conditions, climate, vehicle loads, and local code, and should be confirmed with a contractor or engineer. The formula.
The calculation starts with area: length times width gives the driveway's flat footprint in square feet. For the worked example, 40 feet times 12 feet is 480 square feet. Thickness converts that flat area into a volume — 4 inches is one third of a foot, so raw volume is 480 times 4/12, or 160 cubic feet. A waste or ordering allowance is then applied to that raw volume, because a calculated volume rarely matches what actually gets placed on site. Estimated weight uses a density figure specific to the selected material: about 150 pounds per cubic foot for normal-weight concrete (2.025 tons per cubic yard), about 145 pounds per cubic foot for hot-mix asphalt (1.9575 tons per cubic yard), and about 1.4 tons per cubic yard for a typical crushed-stone gravel base. Multiplying the waste-adjusted cubic yardage by the selected material's density gives the estimated weight — 13.2 tons for the concrete worked example. This weight figure is informational, useful for understanding delivery truck loads or general planning, and does not itself drive the cost calculation.
Material cost is simply the waste-adjusted cubic yardage multiplied by the price per cubic yard the user enters: 6.518518518518518 times $150 is about $977.78 in the worked example. Because the same volume formula and the same cost formula apply regardless of which material is selected, switching between concrete, asphalt, and gravel changes only the density lookup (affecting estimated weight) and whatever price the user enters — every output stays a well-defined, finite number no matter which material is chosen.
A worked example.
A homeowner is planning a 40 by 12 foot concrete driveway at the typical residential thickness of 4 inches, with a standard 10 percent waste allowance, and a local ready-mix price of $150 per cubic yard. The area is 40 times 12, or 480 square feet. Converting the 4 inch thickness to feet (4/12) and multiplying by area gives a raw volume of 160 cubic feet. Applying the 10 percent waste allowance brings that to 176 cubic feet, or 6.518518518518518 cubic yards once divided by 27.
