The formula.

Cost = A×(t⁄12)⁄27×pm + A×(d⁄12)⁄27×pb

The calculation starts with area: length times width gives the patio's footprint in square feet. For the worked example, 16 feet times 12 feet is 192 square feet. That same footprint is then used to compute two separate volumes, because the base course and the surface material occupy different layers with different depths and different materials.

Surface material volume converts the 2 inch paver thickness to feet (2/12) and multiplies by area to get 32 cubic feet before waste. Because both volumes and both cost calculations use the same formula regardless of which surface material is selected, switching between pavers, concrete, and stone changes only the density lookup, the surface thickness, and whatever price the user enters — every output stays a well-defined, finite number no matter which material is chosen, and a base depth of zero (no base course) simply zeroes out the base volume and base cost without breaking the calculation.
