The Department of Energy explains that storage and heat pump water heaters should be sized by first-hour rating, while tankless heaters are sized by simultaneous flow rate and temperature rise. The calculator turns those ideas into a transparent worksheet.
People search for this because tank capacity alone is not the whole story. A 50 gallon tank and a 50 gallon first-hour rating are not the same. First-hour rating depends on tank capacity, heat source, burner or element size, and recovery rate. For tankless systems, gallons of storage are not the issue; the question is whether the unit can raise incoming water to the desired temperature at the flow rate used by simultaneous fixtures. Cold groundwater increases the required temperature rise and can reduce delivered flow.
The worked example uses one shower, one faucet use, one dishwasher cycle, and one clothes-washer use during the peak hour. The estimated hot water demand is 20 + 10 + 6 + 15 = 51 gallons. A candidate first-hour rating of 65 gallons passes that simplified tank check. For tankless mode, the example assumes a 2.0 gpm shower, a 1.0 gpm faucet, and a 1.0 gpm dishwasher running together. Simultaneous flow is 4.0 gpm. Desired water temperature is 120 F and incoming water is 50 F, so required temperature rise is 70 F.
The calculator must be careful about safety. DOE notes 120 F as a common target for most uses and warns that higher temperatures can increase scalding risk. Product manuals, plumbing codes, mixing valves, fuel supply, venting, electrical capacity, and installation conditions matter. The calculator should not recommend unsafe temperatures or claim that a unit will perform exactly as rated under all inlet temperatures. It estimates demand for comparison with manufacturer ratings.

The formula.
Storage water heater sizing begins with peak hour demand. Each hot-water use is represented as gallons per use times the number of uses during the busiest hour. A shower might be estimated at 20 gallons, a faucet task at 10 gallons, a dishwasher at 6 gallons, and a clothes washer at 15 gallons. Adding those values gives the peak hour demand. The required first-hour rating is at least that demand.
First-hour rating is different from tank capacity. DOE explains that first-hour rating is the number of gallons a water heater can supply per hour starting with a full tank, and that it depends on tank capacity and heat input. A tank with high recovery can have a first-hour rating larger than its storage capacity. A tank with low recovery can be less suitable for a household with high peak demand. The calculator should therefore compare demand with first-hour rating when that rating is available.
Tankless sizing uses flow and temperature rise. Add the gallons per minute of fixtures that may operate at the same time. If a shower is 2.0 gpm, a faucet is 1.0 gpm, and a dishwasher is 1.0 gpm, simultaneous flow is 4.0 gpm. Temperature rise is desired output temperature minus incoming water temperature. With a 120 F setpoint and 50 F incoming water, rise is 70 F. Tankless product ratings are often stated as flow at a given temperature rise, so both numbers are needed.
The calculator should keep storage and tankless outputs separate. A tank recommendation should not be converted blindly into tankless flow, and a tankless flow result should not become a tank size. The correct equipment also depends on installation constraints, fuel, venting, electrical capacity, and plumbing. The calculator supplies a demand estimate, not a complete installation design.
A worked example.
The example peak hour includes one shower, one faucet task, one dishwasher cycle, and one clothes-washer use. The shower is estimated at 20 gallons, the faucet at 10 gallons, the dishwasher at 6 gallons, and the clothes washer at 15 gallons. Adding those values gives 51 gallons of peak hour demand.
