Background.
A cross stitch calculator converts the two numbers on a chart — its width and height in stitches — into the two numbers you need in a shop: how big the finished piece will be, and how large a piece of fabric to cut. The conversion itself is one division, because fabric count is stitches per inch. DMC puts it plainly: "The 'count' of aida refers to the number of stitches you make in an inch, and the higher the count the smaller the stitches." So a 200-stitch-wide chart is 200 ÷ 14 = 14.29 inches across on 14-count Aida, and only 200 ÷ 18 = 11.11 inches on 18-count — the same chart, a different object.
The part that trips people up is linen and evenweave, where a stitch is normally worked over two fabric threads rather than one. The Cross Stitch Guild states the rule exactly: "working over two threads on a 28-count evenweave gives stitches the same size as on 14-count aida." That is why this page asks how you stitch as well as what count the fabric is — over two threads, the effective stitches per inch is half the number on the label. The two options are not cosmetic, and the test suite for this page asserts the equivalence directly: 28-count evenweave over two returns byte-for-byte the same size as 14-count Aida.
The fabric size adds an unstitched margin on all four sides, counted twice in each direction. The three inches per side used as the default is common framing practice rather than a published specification — no manufacturer or standards body fixes it — and the page says so rather than presenting it as sourced. If you plan to lace over stretcher bars or finish in a hoop, add more.
The floss estimate is deliberately split into a part that is exact and a part that is yours. The Royal School of Needlework describes cross stitch as "two diagonal stitches, one over the other of equal length, to complete an 'X' shape", so the thread on the face of one stitch is two diagonals of one grid square — exactly 2√2 ÷ stitches per inch, or 0.202 inches at 14 count. What that geometry cannot see is travel on the back, starting and finishing tails, and take-up from fabric thickness, so the allowance for those is an input you set, defaulting to 25 percent. Skein capacity comes from DMC's own specification — "sold in 8.7 yard/8 meter skeins, and its six strands separate easily" — counted in strand-yards, because a stitcher pulls a length and splits it. One caveat worth reading before you trust the skein number: at 100 percent coverage it is the total across all colours for a fully worked grid, and most charts are nowhere near that. Set the coverage honestly, and take per-colour counts from the chart's own key.
What is cross stitch calculator?
Fabric count is the number of threads per inch woven into a needlework fabric, and on Aida — where the threads are grouped into visible blocks with one stitch per block — the count is also the number of stitches per inch. Finished design size is therefore the chart's stitch count divided by the fabric count, in each direction independently. Nothing about the chart changes when you change fabric; only the scale does.
Evenweave and linen are counted the same way but stitched differently. Because the threads are single rather than blocked, a cross stitch is conventionally worked over two of them, which halves the effective stitches per inch. A 28-count evenweave worked over two therefore produces stitches the same size as 14-count Aida, and a 32-count linen matches 16-count Aida.
The cut fabric size is the design size plus an unstitched margin on every side, needed for framing, lacing or hooping and for handling the work while you stitch. Thread requirement is a separate estimate built from the geometry of the stitch — two diagonals of a grid square per stitch — scaled by the number of strands in the needle and by how much of the grid is actually worked, then divided by a skein's capacity in single strands.
How to use this calculator.
- Read the chart's stitch count — width and height in stitches, not inches — and enter both.
- Choose Aida if you stitch one stitch per block, or evenweave/linen if you stitch over two threads. This halves the effective count and it matters more than anything else on the page.
- Enter the count printed on the fabric label, as sold. Do not halve it yourself; the option above does that.
- Set the margin per side. Three inches is a common framing allowance, not a specification — add more for stretcher bars, lacing or hoop finishing.
- Estimate how much of the grid is actually stitched. A sampler might be 25 percent, a full-coverage design 100 percent.
- Set the strands in the needle, the thread allowance, and your skein's length and strand count. The defaults are two strands, a 25 percent allowance, and the 8 m six-strand skein that DMC and Anchor both publish.
- Read the design size as your headline answer, then the minimum cut fabric size below it, then the thread estimate — remembering that at 100 percent coverage the skein figure is the total across all colours.
The formula.
Start with stitches per inch. On Aida it is the fabric count itself, because one stitch covers one woven block. On evenweave or linen worked over two threads it is half the count, which is the equivalence The Cross Stitch Guild states: 28-count evenweave over two gives stitches the same size as 14-count Aida. Divide each of the chart's stitch counts by that figure and you have the finished design size in inches, independently in each direction.
The cut fabric size adds the margin on both sides of each dimension, so a 3 inch margin adds 6 inches to the width and 6 to the height. This is computed from the unrounded design size rather than from the rounded number shown on screen, so the two figures never disagree in the last decimal place.
Thread comes from the geometry of the stitch. A cross stitch is two equal diagonals of one grid square, and a grid square is 1 ÷ stitches-per-inch across, so its diagonal is √2 ÷ spi and the face of one stitch consumes 2√2 ÷ spi inches. At 14 stitches per inch that is 0.2020305089 inches. Multiply by the stitches actually worked, by the strands in the needle, and by one plus your allowance, and you have the total single-strand length required. A skein's capacity is counted the same way: 8 metres of six-stranded floss is 8 × 39.3700787402 × 6 = 1889.7637795276 strand-inches, because a stitcher pulls a working length and splits it into single strands. Divide and round up.
Working the published example: 14 stitches per inch; 200 ÷ 14 = 14.2857142857 in and 150 ÷ 14 = 10.7142857143 in, which is 36.2857142857 × 27.2142857143 cm; add 6 inches each way for the 3 inch margins to get a minimum cut of 20.2857142857 × 16.7142857143 in. The grid is 200 × 150 = 30,000 squares, all worked at 100 percent coverage. Thread per stitch is 0.2020305089 in, so 30,000 stitches at two strands with a 25 percent allowance is 15,152.288 strand-inches, or 420.8968935634 strand-yards. Against a 1889.7637795276 strand-inch skein that is 8.018 skeins, which rounds up to 9. That 1.8 percent overshoot costing a whole skein is exactly why the raw strand-yard figure is shown beside the skein count.
Only one rounding happens before the end: the ceiling on skeins, because a part skein cannot be bought. √2 is computed rather than written as a decimal literal, so the page cannot drift from the constant it claims to use, and every unit factor here is exact — 1 in = 25.4 mm by definition.
A worked example.
A 200 × 150 stitch chart on 14-count Aida, with 3 in margins, two strands in the needle, a 25 percent thread allowance, full coverage and DMC's 8 m six-strand skeins. On Aida the count is the stitches per inch, so 200 ÷ 14 gives a finished width of 14.29 in and 150 ÷ 14 gives 10.71 in — 36.29 × 27.21 cm. Adding 3 in of margin on all four sides puts 6 in on each dimension, so the fabric has to be cut at least 20.29 × 16.71 in. That is the number to take to the shop, and it is a minimum to buy up from rather than a size you will find on a shelf. For thread, the grid is 30,000 squares and all of them are worked at 100 percent coverage. A stitch is two diagonals of a 1/14 in square, which is 0.2020305089 in of thread on the face, so two strands with a 25 percent allowance comes to 420.8968935634 strand-yards. An 8 m six-strand skein holds 1889.7637795276 strand-inches, which makes the requirement 8.018 skeins — and since a part skein cannot be bought, 9. Worth noticing: the answer is only 1.8 percent over eight skeins, and trimming the allowance from 25 to 9 percent would bring it down to seven. That is the sort of decision the raw strand-yard figure is there to let you make. Stitch the same chart over two threads of 28-count evenweave and every one of those numbers is identical, because 28 over two is 14 stitches per inch. Move to 18-count Aida instead and the design shrinks to 11.11 × 8.33 in, needs less fabric, and needs more thread per square inch but less overall.
