The formula.

That raw figure is then scaled up twice: first by the access-and-stacking allowance, which accounts for the walking aisle and the fact that irregular furniture cannot be packed to the ceiling as tightly as uniform boxes can, and then by an optional buffer percentage for general uncertainty. Both allowances are expressed as percentage multipliers, so a 30% access allowance and a 10% buffer together scale raw volume by a factor of 1.30 × 1.10 = 1.43 — meaning the required unit volume is 43% larger than the raw inventory volume before either allowance is applied.

A worked example.

Example

A one-bedroom apartment's worth of furniture is estimated at 250 cubic feet, packed alongside 20 boxes averaging 3 cubic feet each. The boxes contribute 20 × 3 = 60 cubic feet, for a raw inventory volume of 250 + 60 = 310 cubic feet. Applying a 30% access-and-stacking allowance and a 10% safety buffer scales that up by a factor of 1.30 × 1.10 = 1.43, giving a required volume of 310 × 1.43 = 443.3 cubic feet. Scanning the standard sizes at an 8-ft ceiling: a 5×5 (200 cubic feet) and a 5×10 (400 cubic feet) are both too small for 443.3 cubic feet, but a 10×10 (800 cubic feet) comfortably fits. The recommended size is therefore 10×10, which will run at about 55.4% utilization (443.3 ÷ 800), leaving roughly 356.7 cubic feet of spare capacity — useful headroom for a few more boxes or an odd-shaped item that didn't make it into the original estimate. Notice that the raw 310-cubic-foot figure would have almost fit the smaller 5×10 unit; it is specifically the access-and-stacking allowance that correctly pushes the recommendation up to the 10×10.
