Background.

Work out how much butter, jam or peanut butter a given number of bread slices actually needs, and how many jars or boxes that is. The number this page starts from is not a guess about portion size: it is the FDA's Reference Amount Customarily Consumed per eating occasion, set out in federal regulation at 21 CFR 101.12(b) Table 2. That table gives butter, margarine, oil and shortening a reference amount of one tablespoon; honey, jams, jellies, fruit butter, molasses and fruit pastes also one tablespoon; and nut and seed butters, pastes or creams two tablespoons. Those are the figures every Nutrition Facts panel in the United States is built on.

That regulatory chain is what makes the jar arithmetic work without any guesswork about density. 21 CFR 101.9(b)(2) requires the serving size declared on a label to be determined from those same reference amounts, and 101.9(b)(8) requires the servings-per-container figure to be based on that serving size. So the number of servings printed on your jar counts exactly the same servings this page counts, and no conversion from grams to tablespoons is needed anywhere in the container calculation. Read the servings per container off the panel and the count of jars follows.

Three limits belong right here rather than in a collapsed accordion. First, a reference amount describes what people customarily eat so that labels are comparable — it is not a recommendation, and it is not a claim about how much butter anyone should eat. If you spread thinner or thicker than that, set the servings-per-slice field to match. Second, cream cheese and cheese spreads are deliberately out of scope: their reference amount in the same table is 30 grams, a mass rather than a volume, and converting it into tablespoons would need a per-product density this page does not have. Third, the sticks-of-butter figure applies to butter and margarine only, because it divides by the eight tablespoons marked on a quarter-pound stick's wrapper, which is a packaging convention rather than a physical constant.

Everything else is exact. One cup is sixteen tablespoons by definition, and one tablespoon is 14.78676478125 millilitres exactly, both following from NIST's definition of the US gallon as exactly 231 cubic inches. Nothing here is rounded until it is displayed, and the container count is the only figure rounded at all — always up, because you buy whole jars.

What is bread spread calculator?

A bread spread calculator converts a number of bread slices into a quantity of spread and a number of containers to buy. It is the arithmetic a caterer, a school breakfast programme or anyone hosting a brunch does on the back of an envelope, done from a statutory reference amount rather than a guess.

The per-slice amount comes from the FDA's Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed table, 21 CFR 101.12(b) Table 2, which assigns one tablespoon to butter and margarine, one tablespoon to jams, jellies and honey, and two tablespoons to nut and seed butters. Those amounts exist so that Nutrition Facts panels across different brands are comparable, which incidentally makes them the best-sourced per-occasion figures available.

The container count is where the regulation does real work. Because federal law ties a label's declared serving size to the reference amount, and ties servings-per-container to the declared serving size, the servings printed on your jar are the same servings this page counts. That means the calculator can tell you how many jars you need without knowing how dense your particular brand of jam is.

What it is not: a nutrition tool, a dietary recommendation, or a converter. It does not know the calories, it does not tell you how much to eat, and it excludes cream cheese because that category's reference amount is a mass.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Pick your spread category. The label on each option shows the FDA reference amount it uses — one tablespoon for butter or jam, two for nut butter.
  2. Enter how many slices of bread you are covering. For sandwiches, count both faces if you butter both.
  3. Set reference servings per slice. Leave it at 1 for a normal spread; use 0.5 for a thin scrape or 2 for a generous layer.
  4. Read servings per container off the Nutrition Facts panel of the jar or box you plan to buy — it is on every US label, and the default of 32 is a one-pound box of butter.
  5. Read the total tablespoons as the hero number, then the container count for the shopping list and the leftover servings to see how much of the last jar you will not use.

The formula.

Total reference servings is the slice count multiplied by the servings you put on each slice. Total spread is that figure multiplied by the reference amount for the category: one tablespoon for butter, margarine, oil and shortening; one tablespoon for honey, jams, jellies, fruit butter, molasses and fruit pastes; two tablespoons for nut and seed butters, pastes and creams. Those three amounts are quoted from 21 CFR 101.12(b) Table 2 rather than estimated.

Cups and millilitres follow from exact definitions. There are sixteen tablespoons in a US cup, and one tablespoon is half a fluid ounce, which is exactly 14.78676478125 millilitres because the US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches. The stick figure divides by eight, the number of tablespoons marked on the wrapper of a quarter-pound stick of butter, and applies only to butter and margarine.

Containers needed is the total reference servings divided by the servings per container, rounded up, because a jar cannot be bought in fractions. Leftover servings is what remains in the last container. That subtraction is exact, so the leftover figure is always at least zero and always less than one full container.

One consequence of the regulation surprises people, and it is correct. Switch from butter to peanut butter for the same forty slices and the volume of spread doubles, from 40 to 80 tablespoons, because a nut butter's reference amount is two tablespoons rather than one. But the number of jars does not change at all. That is because the servings printed on a peanut butter jar are also two tablespoons each, so the jar holds twice as much spread in the same number of servings. The reference amount cancels out of the container arithmetic entirely, which is exactly why no density is needed.

Worked through on the default inputs — 40 slices, one butter serving each, from one-pound boxes of butter at 32 servings apiece — the total is 40 tablespoons, which is 2.5 cups, 591.5 millilitres, or 5 sticks. That needs 2 boxes, leaving 24 servings unused. The two routes to that leftover figure agree: 5 sticks is a pound and a quarter, two boxes is two pounds, and the three quarters of a pound left over is 24 tablespoons at one tablespoon per serving.

A worked example.

Example

A community breakfast is serving toast to forty people, one slice each, buttered normally. At the FDA reference amount of one tablespoon per eating occasion, that is 40 reference servings and 40 tablespoons of butter. Forty tablespoons is 2.5 cups, or 591.5 millilitres, or 5 sticks of butter, since a quarter-pound stick's wrapper is marked in 8 tablespoons. Butter sold in one-pound boxes carries 32 servings per box at a one-tablespoon serving size, so the shopping list is 2 boxes -- rounded up, because you cannot buy 1.25 boxes. Those two boxes hold 64 servings, so 24 servings are left over. That checks out from the other direction too: 5 sticks is a pound and a quarter, two boxes is two pounds, and the remaining three quarters of a pound is 24 tablespoons. Switching the same forty slices to peanut butter is the case worth understanding. Nut and seed butters have a reference amount of two tablespoons, so the volume needed doubles to 80 tablespoons -- but the container count stays at 2 and the leftover stays at 24 servings, because the servings printed on a peanut butter jar are also two tablespoons each. The reference amount cancels out of the jar arithmetic, which is precisely why this page never needs to know how dense anything is.

Where does the per-slice amount come from?

Why doesn't switching to peanut butter change the number of jars?
Because the jar's own servings scale with the reference amount. A nut butter's reference amount is two tablespoons rather than one, so forty slices need twice the volume — 80 tablespoons instead of 40. But the servings printed on a peanut butter jar are also two tablespoons each, so that jar holds twice the volume in the same number of servings. The reference amount appears on both sides of the division and cancels. This works because 21 CFR 101.9(b)(2) requires a label's serving size to be determined from the reference amount, and 101.9(b)(8) requires servings-per-container to be based on that serving size. It is also the reason this calculator never needs a density for any product.
Why is cream cheese not an option?
Because its reference amount is a mass, not a volume. The same Table 2 lists cream cheese and cheese spread under 'Cheese, all others except those listed as separate categories' with a reference amount of 30 grams. Every other spread on this page has a reference amount in tablespoons, so mixing cream cheese in would mean converting 30 grams into tablespoons, which needs a density that differs by brand and by whether the product is whipped. Rather than return a confidently wrong tablespoon figure, the page leaves the category out and says so. If you need cream cheese, work in grams directly: 30 grams per serving, times your slices, divided by the grams in the tub.
How do I count slices for sandwiches?
Count the faces you actually spread. A sandwich made with butter on both inner faces is two slices' worth of butter, not one, so twenty sandwiches buttered both sides is forty slices in this calculator. A sandwich with butter on one face and jam on the other needs two separate runs — one at twenty slices of butter, one at twenty slices of jam — because the two spreads come out of different jars. For open toast, one slice is one slice.
Is the sticks figure useful for jam?
No, and the output says so. It divides the total tablespoons by eight, which is the number of tablespoons printed on the wrapper of a quarter-pound stick of butter. That is a packaging convention for butter and margarine in the United States, not a unit of volume and not a physical constant. Jam, honey and peanut butter are sold in jars, so ignore the stick figure for those and use the container count instead. The cup and millilitre figures are meaningful for every spread on the page, because those are exact volume conversions.
