A cow gestation calculator turns a service date into a calving date, and the useful version of it has to answer a question the familiar "283 days" hides: 283 days for which cattle? Gestation length in cattle is not one number. The Merck Veterinary Manual gives a population mean of 279 days for Holstein-Friesians. UNL Beef puts British and Continental beef breeds at 279 to 287 days, with 283 days common for most breeds. And Plasse and colleagues, measuring 1,048 Brahman gestations in Florida, found a mean of 292.8 days with an observed range of 271 to 310. That is a fourteen-day spread between a Holstein and a Brahman carrying the same species of calf. Applying a dairy figure to a Brahman-influenced herd will have you checking cows a full two weeks before anything happens; applying a Brahman figure to a Holstein herd will have you miss the start of calving entirely.

The second thing this page does is separate two ideas that most gestation tables collapse into one. The due date is a mean. It is not a deadline, and a cow who sails past it is not in trouble. What matters clinically is where the prolonged-gestation limit sits, and Merck defines that precisely: normal gestation length is the population mean plus or minus three standard deviations, and with a standard deviation of 7 days for cattle that puts the outer edge 21 days past the mean — 300 days for a Holstein, in Merck's own worked example. Past that point a gestation is not late, it is abnormal, and the differential includes fetal death, a fetal deformity and adrenal or pituitary defects in the calf that prevent it from initiating its own birth. So this calculator gives you three dates rather than one: the mean, a fortnight-wide planning window one standard deviation either side of it, and the date past which you stop waiting and start phoning.

The third thing it gives you is the diagnosis and management timetable, which is often more immediately valuable than the due date. Pregnancy-associated glycoprotein rises rapidly in blood between days 24 and 28, so a blood test works from about day 24. Transrectal ultrasound identifies nonpregnant cows 28 to 32 days after breeding — and for a commercial herd, finding the open cows in that window is worth more than confirming the pregnant ones, because it is the only thing that lets you re-breed them inside the same season. Fifty days before calving, Merck notes, 75 per cent of fetal growth occurs and dairy cows are normally dried off. That date is when her feed requirement climbs steeply, and body condition at calving is what determines how quickly she breeds back afterwards.

One deliberate limitation, stated here rather than in a footnote: if your cows ran with a bull instead of being artificially inseminated, you do not have a service date, you have a breeding season. Enter the first day the bull went in, and read every date on this page as the earliest one possible rather than the likely one. No calculator can recover a service date that was never observed.

What is cow gestation calculator?

Cattle gestation is the interval from conception to calving, commonly quoted as about nine and a half months. The Merck Veterinary Manual defines normal gestation length formally as the mean length of gestation for a population plus or minus three standard deviations, which covers at least 99.7% of gestations; its worked example uses 279 days for Holstein-Friesian cattle with a standard deviation of 7 days. Anything beyond three standard deviations past the mean is classed as prolonged gestation rather than a late calving, and prolonged gestation is a recognised clinical problem with causes including fetal death, fetal deformity, and defects of the calf's own pituitary or adrenal glands that prevent it from triggering parturition. Breed group is the largest single influence on the mean: Bos indicus cattle carry roughly two weeks longer than Holsteins. Within a breed, the sex of the calf shifts gestation by a day or two — bull calves are carried slightly longer than heifer calves — and sire genotype has a measurable effect, but both are small relative to the standard deviation and neither can be known in advance. The practical milestones between breeding and calving are a PAG blood test from about day 24, transrectal ultrasound from days 28 to 32, and the final 50 days in which three quarters of fetal growth occurs and during which dairy cows are dried off.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Choose the breed group. Dairy Holstein-Friesian, British or Continental beef, or Bos indicus. This changes the mean by up to fourteen days and is the most consequential choice on the page.
  2. Enter the breeding or AI date in YYYY-MM-DD form. If she ran with a bull, enter the first day of the breeding season and treat the results as the earliest possible dates.
  3. Leave today's date as it is, or change it to see the timetable from a different day.
  4. Read the calving window, not just the date. It is one standard deviation either side of the mean, and it is a planning band rather than a probability — cows calve outside it and are entirely normal.
  5. Note the prolonged-gestation limit. That is the date that actually requires action — Merck treats gestation past three standard deviations as abnormal rather than late.
  6. Use the early ultrasound window to book the pregnancy check, and the late-gestation date to plan dry-off, the move to a calving area and the step up in feed.

The formula.

Step 1 selects the mean gestation length M for the breed group you chose. Three values ship, each from a named authority: 279 days for Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle, published by the Merck Veterinary Manual; 283 days for British and Continental beef breeds, from UNL Beef, which gives 279–287 days across breeds and 283 as common; and 293 days for Bos indicus, which is Plasse and colleagues' measured mean of 292.8 days over 1,048 Brahman gestations rounded to the nearest whole day. That rounding is the only source figure rounded anywhere in this calculator, and the page says so in the output text whenever that mode is selected. Step 2 adds M calendar days to the breeding date to give the expected calving date. Step 3 builds the two bands, and both come from a single definition rather than from three separate published ranges. Merck defines normal gestation length as the mean plus or minus three standard deviations, and prints the standard deviation for cattle as 7 days. The calving window shown here is the mean plus or minus one standard deviation — a stated rule applied to a published SD, labelled as one standard deviation in the output text — and spans a fortnight. It is offered as a planning band rather than as a probability, because Merck's SD of 7 days is published for cattle generally while Knott's 2,824 Holstein calvings imply a tighter spread inside a single breed, with about 75% of births falling between days 275 and 285. The prolonged-gestation limit is the mean plus three standard deviations, which is Merck's own outer edge of normality. Applying Merck's SD to all three breed groups is a deliberate decision: Plasse's Brahman data corroborates it independently, since 292.8 plus or minus 21 days gives 271.8 to 313.8 against an observed range of 271 to 310. Step 4 places the fixed milestones, which do not move with breed: a PAG blood test from day 24, transrectal ultrasound days 28 to 32, and late gestation beginning 50 days before the expected calving date. Step 5 classifies today. The classification scalar is the gestation day — whole days elapsed since the breeding date — used unrounded, which is safe here because every band edge is an integer day. All arithmetic is anchored at UTC midnight so no daylight-saving change can shift a date, and every numeric result is computed at 40 significant digits and rounded once at the return boundary.

A worked example.

Example

A commercial beef producer artificially inseminates a cow on 15 May 2026 and checks the plan on 30 July. On the beef Bos taurus mean of 283 days the calculator returns an expected calving date of Monday, 22 February 2027, with a calving window of 2027-02-15 to 2027-03-01. That window is a fortnight wide because it is one standard deviation either side of the mean, and the honest reading of it is that it is a planning band, not a probability — cows calve outside it without anything being wrong. The date that actually demands action is the prolonged-gestation limit of 2027-03-15 — three standard deviations past the mean, day 304, past which Merck classes the gestation as abnormal rather than late. Today she is on gestation day 76, so there are 207 days to go, and 76 plus 207 is 283 as it should be. The stage note reports mid gestation and points out that the early ultrasound window, which ran 2026-06-12 to 2026-06-16, has already closed — if she was scanned then, the open cows in that batch could still have been re-bred in the same season, which is the whole reason that fortnight matters. The next date to put in the diary is 2027-01-03, fifty days out, when three quarters of fetal growth is still ahead of her and her feed requirement starts climbing steeply. Had this been a Brahman-influenced cow instead, the same service date would have given a calving date ten days later, on 2027-03-04, which is the size of the error you inherit by using one gestation table for every herd.

How long is a cow pregnant — is it really 283 days?
283 days is the common figure for British and Continental beef breeds, and UNL Beef gives 279 to 287 days across those breeds. It is not universal. The Merck Veterinary Manual's population mean for Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle is 279 days. Plasse and colleagues measured 1,048 Brahman gestations and found a mean of 292.8 days. So the answer spans a fortnight depending on the herd, which is why this page asks for the breed group before it gives you a date.
My cow is past her due date. When should I worry?
Look at the prolonged-gestation limit rather than the due date. The due date is a population mean, so half of all cows pass it by definition and nothing is wrong. Merck defines normal gestation as the mean plus or minus three standard deviations, and with a standard deviation of 7 days that puts the outer edge 21 days past the mean — 300 days for a Holstein in Merck's own example. Past that point gestation is classed as prolonged rather than late, and the causes include fetal death, fetal deformity and pituitary or adrenal defects in the calf that stop it initiating birth. That is a veterinary call, not another week of waiting.
Why does the calculator use the same standard deviation for all three breed groups?
Because only one standard deviation for cattle gestation is published in a source we could verify — Merck's 7 days — and inventing a different one per breed would be guessing. It is also corroborated independently: Plasse's Brahman mean of 292.8 days plus or minus three standard deviations of 7 days gives 271.8 to 313.8 days, against an observed range in that study of 271 to 310 days across 1,048 gestations. The agreement at both ends is close enough that applying Merck's dispersion across breed groups is defensible. If you have a herd standard deviation of your own from your own calving records, it will beat ours.
Is the calving window a probability? How many cows actually calve inside it?
It is a planning band, and we deliberately do not attach a percentage to it, because our two best sources disagree about how tightly cattle gestation is distributed. Merck publishes a standard deviation of 7 days for cattle, which is what this page uses. But Knott's study of 2,824 Holstein-Friesian single births reports a mean of 279.9 days with about 75% of calves born between days 275 and 285 — an eleven-day span, tighter than the fifteen-day band a 7-day standard deviation produces. Both can be true: Merck's figure covers cattle generally, across breeds and parities, while Knott measured one breed. We kept Merck's wider 7 days because a wider window produces fewer false alarms about a cow being late, and we removed the probability claim rather than quote a number neither source supports.
When can pregnancy actually be confirmed?
Merck reports that pregnancy-associated glycoprotein concentrations in blood rise rapidly between days 24 and 28 of gestation, so a blood test becomes usable from about day 24. Transrectal ultrasonography identifies nonpregnant cows 28 to 32 days after breeding. For a commercial herd the second of those is usually the one worth paying for, because the commercial value is in finding the open cows early enough to re-breed them within the same season, not in confirming the ones you already suspect are in calf.
What if my cows ran with a bull and I have no service date?
Then you have a breeding season, not a breeding date, and no calculator can recover what was never observed. Enter the first day the bull went in with the cows and read every date on this page as the earliest possible date rather than the likely one — the true service date can be anywhere inside the length of the joining period. A pregnancy diagnosis with ultrasound will let a veterinarian age the pregnancy directly and is the only way to narrow it.
Does the sex of the calf change the gestation length?
Slightly. UNL Beef notes that cows carrying bull calves tend to have a slightly longer gestation than cows carrying heifer calves, and Plasse's Brahman study found that both sex and sire contributed significantly to the variance in gestation length. The effect is on the order of a day or two, which is well inside the one-standard-deviation window this page already displays, so no adjustment is applied — and in any case you cannot know the calf's sex in advance without a scan that reports it.
Why does the page show a date fifty days before calving?
Because that is where the work is. Merck notes that in the 50 days before calving 75 per cent of fetal growth occurs and cows are usually not lactating during this dry period. Her energy and protein requirements climb steeply through that stretch, and Merck is explicit that cow condition at calving is critical to rebreeding — the onset of oestrus after calving is delayed in cows that lose weight or stay thin during late pregnancy. So the fifty-day date is when to dry off a dairy cow, step up the ration and plan the move to a clean calving area.
