Background.

Mare gestation is long and naturally variable, so a foaling calculator is best treated as a preparation calendar rather than a prediction of the birth date. This tool adds the MSD Veterinary Manual’s approximate 340-day average to the last recorded breeding date. It also displays the manual’s broad 315–365 day range so the single centre date is never mistaken for an appointment.

The last breeding date is a practical field anchor, but it is not necessarily the day of conception. A mare can be covered more than once during a cycle, and the interval from breeding to ovulation varies. When veterinary ovulation records are available, use the clinic’s expected date and monitoring plan. When only pasture exposure is known, a single calculator entry cannot recover the conception date; use the earliest and latest plausible dates to create a wider management calendar.

MSD states that pregnancy lasts 315–365 days with an average of 340. It also names nutrition, time of year and fetal sex as influences. Independent extension sources describe different but overlapping planning bands: University of Minnesota says pregnancy is usually 335–342 days but can range from 315 to more than 400, Oklahoma State gives 320–380 with an average of 338–345, and Penn State describes 330–370 with most around 340. These are not interchangeable definitions of a hard normal limit. Gestational age alone does not establish fetal maturity or tell an owner whether labour should be induced. Oklahoma State explicitly says all fetuses are not necessarily mature at 320 days and that length alone is inadequate for determining readiness. This calculator therefore has no induction threshold, drug schedule, medication dose or treatment recommendation. Those decisions require an equine veterinarian with the mare’s breeding record and examination findings.

Preparation should begin well before the average date.
