Background.
A livestock scale is the preferred way to know a horse’s body weight, but a scale is not always available in a stable or field. This calculator estimates weight from two tape measurements: heart girth and body length. It implements the equations reproduced by the MSD Veterinary Manual for adult horses, yearlings and weanlings, and accepts either inches or centimetres.
Measure heart girth around the barrel just behind the shoulders and at the base of the withers. Keep the tape snug against the coat without pulling it tight enough to indent the body. Measure body length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the rump while the horse stands square on level ground. The exact landmarks matter because a few inches are magnified when heart girth is squared.
For an adult older than two years, the published imperial equation divides girth squared times length by 330. The yearling equation uses 301 and the weanling equation uses 280. When centimetres are selected, this implementation converts both measurements with exactly 2.54 cm per inch before applying the matching published equation. Pounds are converted with exactly 0.45359237 kg per pound.
The result is an estimate, not a scale reading. The MSD Veterinary Manual says the adult equation is closer to actual weight than a weight tape but notes that it can still slightly underestimate. University of Minnesota research also shows that breed type, height, neck circumference and body condition affect accuracy; its more elaborate breed-specific models use those additional measurements. A simple two-measurement tool trades precision for accessibility.
Use consistent technique if the purpose is trend tracking. Measure at the same body landmarks, at a similar time relative to feeding, with the same tape and preferably the same person. A repeatable estimate can reveal change even when its absolute value differs from a weighbridge. Record body-condition score separately because the equation estimates mass but does not decide whether that mass is appropriate.
Do not use this estimate to calculate medication, anaesthetic, dewormer or other veterinary doses. A dosing error can matter, and this page intentionally provides no medication calculations. Obtain a measured weight or direction from a veterinarian for clinical decisions. A scale is also preferable when transport limits, feed prescriptions or a rapid unexplained weight change make accuracy important.
The age groups are equation categories, not a way to infer maturity from appearance. Select the animal’s known stage. The adult equation is described for horses older than two years; the youth equations come from extension guidance for weanlings and yearlings. Donkeys, mules, pregnant mares, miniature horses and draft horses may require different or more specific models. The University of Minnesota source explicitly developed separate breed-type equations, so this page does not claim universal accuracy.
In the worked example, a 75-inch heart girth and 65-inch body length for an adult give 75² × 65 ÷ 330 = 1,107.95 lb, or about 502.56 kg. Decimal.js carries the square, multiplication, division and unit conversion, then rounds once at the output boundary. More decimal places do not remove biological or measurement uncertainty, so interpret the figure as an estimate and retain the raw tape readings for later comparison.

The formula.
The selected age group supplies the published divisor. A 75-inch girth and 65-inch length for an adult produce 75² × 65 ÷ 330 = 1,107.9545454545 lb. Multiplying by 0.45359237 gives 502.559728125 kg. Centimetre inputs are divided by exactly 2.54 first, so equivalent measurements produce the same result.
A worked example.
For an adult, square the 75-inch heart girth, multiply by the 65-inch body length and divide by 330. The estimate is 1,107.95 lb or 502.56 kg. It is not accurate enough to serve as a medication-dosing weight.
