WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute has productized a version of that same research into clinical growth charts covering ages 12 weeks to 2 years across five size categories, and a veterinarian can plot your specific puppy against those charts far more accurately than any generic calculator can.
What this calculator does instead is apply a simple, transparent planning heuristic: it estimates roughly what percentage of eventual adult weight a puppy has typically reached by a given age, bucketed into four adult-size classes (small, medium, large, giant) whose maturation timelines are chosen to be broadly consistent with the ranges the cited veterinary research describes, then divides the puppy's current weight by that percentage to project an adult weight. A small-breed puppy reaches its estimated adult size faster (around 48 weeks, roughly 11 months) than a giant-breed puppy (around 96 weeks, roughly 22 months), reflecting the well-documented fact that larger dog breeds take substantially longer to finish growing.
Treat the result as a ballpark figure to help with practical planning — crate sizing, whether to budget for a large-breed diet, or simply satisfying curiosity — not as a guarantee. Individual puppies vary around any population curve, mixed-breed puppies are harder to size-class accurately than purebreds, and the actual adult weight also depends on factors this simple calculator cannot see: genetics, nutrition, spay/neuter timing, and overall health. For anything more than casual planning, ask your veterinarian to track your puppy against an actual published growth-percentile chart at routine visits.
The gap between this calculator and a real veterinary growth chart is worth understanding rather than glossing over. A percentile chart plots an individual puppy's weight-for-age against thousands of other dogs of a comparable predicted adult size, and a veterinarian can flag early if a puppy is tracking meaningfully above or below its expected curve — a signal that can matter for catching nutritional or health issues early. What is puppy weight calculator?
Puppy growth is famously non-linear: puppies gain a disproportionate share of their eventual adult weight in the first several months of life, then the growth rate slows as they approach their genetically determined adult size, and the total TIME this takes varies dramatically by projected adult size — small breeds typically finish growing within about a year, while giant breeds can keep growing for nearly two years. This calculator estimates how far along that curve a puppy's current age falls, expressed as a percentage of eventual adult weight, and then works backward from the puppy's current weight to project an adult weight. It is explicitly a simplified planning tool: real veterinary growth-monitoring uses individualized, breed/sex-specific percentile charts built from very large datasets (see the Salt et al. 2017 PLOS ONE study and the WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute's clinical growth charts, both cited below), and those are the appropriate reference if you need a precise, medically-informed answer rather than a rough estimate.

The formula.
The calculator holds a simple percent-of-adult-weight-by-age planning curve for each of four adult-size classes, interpolating linearly between checkpoints at 8, 16, 24, 36, and (depending on size class) 48-96 weeks. For example, the medium-size curve estimates 18% of adult weight at 8 weeks, 40% at 16 weeks, 65% at 24 weeks, 85% at 36 weeks, and 100% at 52 weeks (one year) — broadly consistent with veterinary observations that medium dogs finish the bulk of their growth within their first year. The giant-size curve stretches the same shape out to 96 weeks (nearly 2 years) before reaching 100%, reflecting the well-documented fact that giant breeds mature much more slowly. For an age that falls between two checkpoints, the calculator interpolates linearly between them; for an age beyond the size class's final checkpoint, the percentage is capped at 100% (the calculator assumes the dog has finished growing rather than projecting an ever-larger hypothetical weight). Once the percentage is estimated, projected adult weight is simply current weight divided by that percentage (expressed as a decimal) — if a puppy has reached an estimated 40% of its adult weight, its current weight is treated as 40% of the unknown adult figure, so dividing by 0.40 recovers that adult figure.
A worked example.
A medium-breed puppy weighs 10 kg at 16 weeks (4 months) old. The medium-size planning curve estimates that a puppy of this projected adult size has reached about 40% of its adult weight by 16 weeks. Dividing 10 kg by 0.40 gives a projected adult weight of 25 kg (about 55.1 lb). The same curve estimates this size class typically finishes growing around 52 weeks (1 year) old, so this puppy has roughly another 9 months of growth ahead of it before reaching that projected weight — and, as with any estimate of this kind, the actual adult weight could reasonably land somewhat above or below 25 kg depending on genetics, nutrition, and individual variation.
