For example, the medium-size curve estimates 18% of adult weight at 8 weeks, 40% at 16 weeks, 65% at 24 weeks, 85% at 36 weeks, and 100% at 52 weeks (one year) — broadly consistent with veterinary observations that medium dogs finish the bulk of their growth within their first year. The giant-size curve stretches the same shape out to 96 weeks (nearly 2 years) before reaching 100%, reflecting the well-documented fact that giant breeds mature much more slowly. For an age that falls between two checkpoints, the calculator interpolates linearly between them; for an age beyond the size class's final checkpoint, the percentage is capped at 100% (the calculator assumes the dog has finished growing rather than projecting an ever-larger hypothetical weight). Why does the percentage cap at 100% instead of continuing to grow past the maturity age?
Because once a dog reaches its adult size, its weight-as-a-percentage-of-adult-weight is, by definition, 100% and stays there (barring later weight gain or loss unrelated to growth). If the calculator instead extrapolated the growth curve's slope indefinitely past the maturity checkpoint, it would incorrectly project an ever-increasing "adult" weight for an older dog, which is not how growth works. Capping at 100% keeps the projection meaningful for any age you enter, including adult dogs well past their growth period.
Can I use this for a very young puppy, only a few weeks old?
