Rabbit Gestation Calculator — Kindling Date

Estimate a rabbit's kindling date, 31–33 day planning window and sourced day-28 nest-box date.

Rabbit Gestation Calculator

Use the first recorded mating date. Several matings should be kept within the same one- or two-day record window.

Background.

Rabbit pregnancy is short, making a reliable breeding record especially useful. This calculator adds 31 days to the recorded mating date for a centre estimate, shows the MSD Veterinary Manual’s 31–33 day kindling window, and marks day 28 for placing a nest box. The day-28 milestone is also published by Penn State Extension.

Use the first known mating date. Rabbits are induced ovulators, but a mating date still does not prove conception. False pregnancy is common, and body shape or nesting behaviour cannot replace veterinary assessment. If mating occurred across two days, repeat the calculation for the later date so the preparation calendar covers both possibilities.

MSD says pregnancy lasts about 31–33 days and notes that does with small litters can have longer pregnancies. Penn State describes an average of 31–32 days. Utah State publishes a broader 28–33 day producer range and says size can affect timing. Those sources use different population and management descriptions. This page keeps MSD’s exact clinical range rather than merging the outer limits into a probability claim, while disclosing the broader observation.

The nest-box output is breeding date plus 28 days. It is a husbandry reminder, not evidence that pregnancy is present and not a substitute for a suitable enclosure. MSD explains that adding the box too early can allow urine and faecal contamination. Bedding, box dimensions, sanitation, temperature and monitoring should follow qualified rabbit-care guidance appropriate to the breed and setup.

A calendar cannot determine whether labour is progressing normally, whether a litter is viable or whether the doe needs intervention. The MSD page advises veterinary involvement when pregnancy extends and describes serious outcomes after an excessively delayed birth. This calculator intentionally supplies no labour induction, medication, supplement or treatment dosing. Contact a rabbit-experienced veterinarian promptly when the expected window passes or when the doe shows distress, stops eating, has abnormal discharge, strains without producing kits or otherwise seems unwell.

In the worked example, breeding on 1 January 2026 gives day 28 on 29 January, day 31 on 1 February and day 33 on 3 February. The arithmetic uses civil calendar days in UTC, so leap years and daylight-saving changes are handled consistently. Biological uncertainty remains far larger than date-computation uncertainty.

Prepare before the window: record the breeding, arrange a clean nest box and bedding, check food and water access, minimize avoidable stress and know how to contact veterinary help. Do not wait for the centre date to make those arrangements. Equally, do not label a doe pregnant or overdue solely from this output. Examination and the actual animal govern.

The calculator is for domestic-rabbit breeding records, not wild-rabbit rehabilitation and not a recommendation to breed. Responsible breeding requires appropriate age, health, housing, genetics, homes for offspring and access to veterinary care. Those decisions remain outside the arithmetic.

What is rabbit gestation calculator?

Rabbit gestation is the short interval between conception and kindling. MSD describes about 31–33 days, while extension sources report overlapping ranges and emphasize record-keeping and preparation.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Enter the first recorded mating date.
  2. Use day 28 as the sourced nest-box preparation reminder.
  3. Treat day 31 as a centre estimate and prepare across days 31–33.
  4. If mating spanned another day, calculate that date too.
  5. Use a rabbit-experienced veterinarian for pregnancy confirmation, delayed kindling, distress or abnormal signs.

The formula.

centre estimate = breeding date + 31 days

The formula shifts the same civil date by 28, 31 and 33 whole days. A 1 January 2026 breeding produces a 29 January nest-box reminder, a 1 February centre estimate and a 3 February late edge. It does not infer conception or fit a probability curve.

A worked example.

Example

For a recorded mating on 1 January 2026, place the prepared nest box around 29 January. The 31-day estimate is 1 February, and the MSD planning window ends 3 February. Veterinary findings govern if timing or signs cause concern.

Frequently asked questions.

How long are rabbits pregnant?
MSD says about 31–33 days. Penn State gives an average of 31–32, while Utah State describes a broader 28–33 day producer range.
Why is there a day-28 date?
MSD and Penn State recommend adding a nest box around day 28, close enough to kindling to reduce unnecessary contamination.
Does nesting prove pregnancy?
No. False pregnancy is common in rabbits, so behaviour and a calendar do not confirm conception.
What if mating occurred over two days?
Run both dates and prepare for the combined span. The formula cannot know which mating led to conception.
Does this page provide induction or treatment doses?
No. It supplies no medication, supplement, induction or treatment dosing. Delayed kindling or illness needs a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.
