Background.
This is an educational planning estimate, not veterinary advice, and it does not diagnose pregnancy — only a veterinarian can do that, using ultrasound or a relaxin blood test. Read the whelping window beside the date, not just the date, and phone your vet immediately if your dog passes the end of that window, strains for more than thirty minutes without producing a puppy, goes more than two hours between puppies, or has green or foul-smelling discharge before the first puppy arrives.
A dog pregnancy calculator estimates a whelping date, and the honest version of that tool has to start by asking a question most calculators skip: which date do you actually know? Canine gestation is one of the most commonly misquoted figures in pet ownership. "Sixty-three days" is repeated everywhere as though it were a fixed constant, but the Merck Veterinary Manual publishes four different numbers for the same pregnancy, because each is measured from a different event. Normal gestation in the bitch is 56–58 days from the first day of diestrus, 64–66 days from the initial rise in progesterone above baseline (the LH surge), 62–64 days from ovulation itself, and 58–72 days from the first time the female permitted breeding. Those are not competing estimates — they are the same nine-week pregnancy measured from four different starting lines, and the arithmetic only works if you use the length that matches the event you recorded.
The difference between them is the whole point. If your veterinarian ran serial progesterone tests and told you the day of the LH surge or of ovulation, your whelping date is predictable to within about three days, and this calculator will show you a three-day window. If all you have is the date of a mating, the published range is 58 to 72 days — a fifteen-day spread — because the same mating can happen days before ovulation or days after it, and sperm survive in the canine reproductive tract long enough for both to result in a pregnancy. This page does not hide that. In the untimed-breeding mode it still gives you a single date, because you need something to plan around, but that date is the arithmetic midpoint of the published 58–72 day range and the page says so beside the answer rather than in a footnote. It is a planning date. It is not a prediction, and no calculator anywhere can turn an untimed mating into one.
The second thing the calculator gives you is a diagnostic timetable, which is often more immediately useful than the due date itself. A commercial relaxin assay only becomes reliable after roughly 22–27 days of gestation, because it detects placental hormone rather than the pregnancy directly. Ultrasonography is best performed at 25–35 days, which is the window in which it both confirms the pregnancy and shows whether the fetuses are alive. Radiography is a different tool for a different job: after day 55 the fetal skeletons are mineralised enough to count, which is how you learn whether you are expecting two puppies or nine, and whether one of them is large enough to need a planned caesarean. All three of those day numbers are quoted by Merck on the scale where whelping falls at 64–66 days, so this calculator shifts them onto whichever anchor you chose — by 2 days for the ovulation anchor, by 8 days for the diestrual shift — using the difference between Merck's own published figures rather than any new assumption.
What this page deliberately does not do is predict a fertile window or a next season. That calculation is anchored on the first day of proestrus, and proestrus lasts anywhere from three days to three weeks, which makes it a poor foundation for a whelping date. There is also no medication dosing here of any kind, for pregnant dogs or otherwise: a weight-based dosing error can kill an animal, and drugs given during pregnancy are a veterinary decision, not a calculator's.
What is dog pregnancy calculator?
Canine gestation is the interval between conception and whelping, conventionally reported as about nine weeks. The reason a single number is misleading is that dogs are spontaneous ovulators with a long, variable fertile period: a bitch can accept a mate for up to three weeks, the LH surge and ovulation happen at one specific point inside that window, and canine sperm remain viable for several days. The consequence is that the interval from mating to whelping (58–72 days) is far more variable than the interval from ovulation to whelping (62–64 days) or from the LH surge to whelping (64–66 days), even though the pregnancy itself is the same length every time. This is why veterinary breeding management is built around progesterone testing rather than mating dates. Diestrus — identified by a characteristic abrupt shift in vaginal cytology — is the most precise practical anchor of all, giving whelping 56–58 days later. Once pregnancy is established, the timetable that matters clinically is: relaxin assay valid after 22–27 days, ultrasound best at 25–35 days for viability, radiography after 55 days for a fetal count, and a drop in rectal temperature to roughly 37.1 °C in the 8–24 hours before stage I labour begins.
How to use this calculator.
- Choose the event you actually have a date for. If your vet ran progesterone tests, pick the LH surge or ovulation — those give a three-day window. If a cytology report told you the first day of diestrus, pick that. Otherwise pick the first day she permitted breeding and accept a wider window.
- Enter the date of that event in YYYY-MM-DD form. Enter the event date, not the date you first suspected pregnancy.
- Leave today's date as it is, or change it to see the timetable from a different day.
- Read the whelping window before the single date. On the untimed-breeding anchor the window is fifteen days wide and the date shown is only its midpoint.
- Use the ultrasound window to book the confirmation scan, and the radiograph date if you want a puppy count before whelping — a count is what tells you whether to plan a caesarean.
- Check the stage note for what is worth doing today, and start taking her temperature twice daily once the window opens: a drop to about 37.1 °C usually precedes whelping by 8–24 hours.
- Phone your veterinarian if she passes the end of the window, or at any of the emergency signs listed beside the result — do not wait to see whether it resolves.
The formula.
Step 1 selects the gestation length L and the whelping window for the anchor you chose, straight from the Merck Veterinary Manual: LH surge L = 65 with a 64–66 day window; ovulation L = 63 with 62–64; diestrual shift L = 57 with 56–58; first breeding, window 58–72. Step 2 adds L calendar days to the anchor date to give the expected whelping date, and adds the two window edges to give the window. There is exactly one derived number on this page and it is stated plainly: Merck publishes no point estimate for the untimed-breeding anchor, only the 58–72 day range, so that mode uses the arithmetic midpoint (58 + 72) / 2 = 65 days. That is a stated rule applied to a published range, not a guessed constant, and the output text labels it as a midpoint every time it appears. Step 3 places the diagnostic milestones. Merck quotes relaxin as valid after 22–27 days, ultrasound as best at 25–35 days, and radiography as useful after 55 days — all on the scale where whelping falls at 64–66 days, which is the LH-surge scale. To put them on your anchor, each day number is shifted by (65 − L): by 0 days for the LH-surge and first-breeding anchors, by 2 days for ovulation, and by 8 days for the diestrual shift. Both shifts are simply the difference between two figures Merck prints side by side in the same sentence, so no new constant enters the calculation. Step 4 classifies today. The classification scalar is the gestation day — whole days elapsed since the anchor date — and it is used unrounded, which matters because every band edge here is an integer day. The bands, in order, are: before the relaxin day, relaxin valid, the ultrasound window, mid-to-late gestation, radiography valid, the whelping window open, and past the window. All arithmetic is anchored at UTC midnight so a daylight-saving change cannot shift a date by a day, and every numeric result is computed at 40 significant digits and rounded once at the return boundary.
A worked example.
A breeder has serial progesterone results putting ovulation on 1 June 2026, and is checking the plan on 20 June. Because the anchor is ovulation, the calculator uses Merck's 62–64 day figure for that anchor: 63 days added to 1 June gives an expected whelping date of Monday, 3 August 2026, with a published window of 2026-08-02 to 2026-08-04. That three-day window is the payoff for having paid for progesterone testing — the same litter, dated from an untimed mating, would have carried a fifteen-day window instead. Today is gestation day 19, so there are 44 days to go (19 + 44 = 63). The stage note says it is still too early to confirm anything: a relaxin assay only becomes reliable from day 20 on this scale (Merck's day 22, shifted 2 days earlier because the ovulation anchor sits 2 days after the LH surge in Merck's own figures), and ultrasound is the better confirmation anyway. The best ultrasound window runs 2026-06-24 to 2026-07-04 — Merck's 25–35 days gestation, shifted the same 2 days — so the scan should be booked for that fortnight. A radiographic puppy count becomes worthwhile from 2026-07-25, day 54 on this anchor, and that is the number worth acting on if she is a breed with any history of dystocia: knowing whether there are two puppies or nine, before labour starts, is what makes a planned caesarean possible instead of an emergency one.
