Background.
This is an educational planning estimate, not veterinary advice, and it cannot tell you whether your cat is pregnant — that takes abdominal palpation or an ultrasound, and neither is reliable before about day 21. Read the birth window beside the date rather than the date alone, and phone your vet immediately if she passes the end of that window, strains for more than thirty minutes without producing a kitten, goes more than two hours between kittens while still straining, or has bloody or foul-smelling discharge before the first kitten.
A cat pregnancy calculator is a simpler tool than its canine equivalent, and the reason is a genuine and useful piece of feline biology: cats are induced ovulators. A queen does not release eggs on a hormonal schedule of her own — the LH surge that triggers ovulation is itself triggered by the physical act of mating, which is also why Merck advises multiple breedings across two or three days to make ovulation reliable. Because the mating and the LH surge effectively coincide, the mating date is a genuinely good anchor for a queening date. The Merck Veterinary Manual puts parturition at 64 to 66 days from the LH surge triggered by copulation, and its cat-owner guidance simply says delivery typically occurs 64 to 66 days after breeding. Contrast that with a dog, where an untimed mating gives a fifteen-day spread from 58 to 72 days, because a bitch ovulates spontaneously at an unknown point inside a receptive period that can run three weeks. Same nine-week pregnancy; completely different predictability.
That does not mean feline gestation is a single fixed number, and this page does not pretend it is. It offers two published figures and lets you see both, because two respectable sources measured two different things. The clinical figure is Merck's: 65 days, with a 64 to 66 day window, which is also the value in Merck's own table of approximate gestation periods. The observed figure comes from Root Kustritz, Johnston and Olson's 1995 study of a feline research colony, where gestation across fifteen pregnancies averaged 66.9 days with a range of 62 to 71 days. Those are not compatible: the colony mean is nearly two days longer than the clinical figure, and the colony range is more than three times as wide. A calculator that quietly picked one and hid the other would be making a research judgement on your behalf and telling you it was arithmetic. This one shows you which figure is driving the answer, in the output text, every time.
The second thing this calculator does is turn the abstract nine weeks into three dates you can actually act on. The first is the confirmation window: days 21 to 30 after breeding, which is when palpation and ultrasound become useful. The second is the feeding step-up, twenty-one days before the expected birth, because a queen's energy requirement climbs steeply in the last three weeks as the kittens put on most of their birth weight — Merck's cat-owner guidance is roughly 25% more food in that period, rising to two or three times her normal ration once she is nursing. The third is the birth window itself, and the calculator widens its late edge by one day for every extra day she spent with the tom, since any of those matings could have been the one that triggered ovulation. That widening is a derivation from Merck's own multiple-breeding advice, not an invented adjustment, and it deliberately never moves the expected date or the early edge.
What this page will never do is give you a drug dose. Medication, supplements and wormers during pregnancy are veterinary decisions — several common wormers and flea treatments are not licensed for pregnant queens — and a weight-based dosing error can kill an animal. Ask your vet.
What is cat pregnancy calculator?
Feline gestation is the interval from mating to queening, conventionally about nine weeks. Cats differ from dogs in the single respect that matters most for a due date: they are induced ovulators, meaning the LH surge that causes ovulation is triggered by vaginal-cervical stimulation during mating rather than arising spontaneously. The practical consequence is that the mating date and the hormonal start of the pregnancy are effectively the same event, so the interval from mating to birth is tightly clustered — Merck gives 64 to 66 days — where the same interval in a dog spans 58 to 72 days. It also means a queen who mates once may not ovulate at all, which is why repeated breedings over two or three days are standard practice, and why a queen can carry kittens fathered by more than one tom in the same litter. The clinical timetable that follows from the mating date is: nothing detectable before about day 21; palpation and ultrasound useful from day 21 to 30; fetal skeletons visible on radiograph from around day 45, which is earlier than in the dog; a steep rise in energy requirement over the final three weeks; and stage I labour, mostly restlessness and nesting, in the day or so before the first kitten arrives.
How to use this calculator.
- Enter the first day you saw her mate. If she was an outdoor cat and you did not see it, this calculator cannot help — an ultrasound is the only way to stage the pregnancy.
- Enter how many consecutive days she had access to the tom. One if you saw a single mating; two or three for a planned breeding, which is what Merck recommends.
- Choose which published figure to use. Start with the clinical one; switch to the observed-colony figure to see how much wider a real measured population was.
- Leave today's date as it is, or change it to read the timetable from another day.
- Read the birth window, not just the expected date. Two days either side of the estimate is normal.
- Book the confirmation scan inside the confirmation window shown — before day 21 there is nothing reliable to find.
- Increase her food from the step-up date shown, by roughly a quarter, and keep food available freely once she is nursing.
- Phone your veterinarian if she passes the end of the window, or at any of the emergency signs listed beside the result. Do not wait overnight to see whether it settles.
The formula.
Step 1 selects the gestation length and window for the published figure you chose. The clinical figure is L = 65 days with a 64–66 day window, which is both Merck's stated range from the copulation-triggered LH surge and the value in Merck's own gestation-period table — so the point estimate is published, not derived. The observed-colony figure is L = 67 days with a 62–71 day window, from Root Kustritz and colleagues' measured mean of 66.9 ± 2.9 days; 67 is that mean rounded to the nearest whole day, which is the only place on this page a source figure is rounded, and the output text says so. Step 2 adds L calendar days to the first mating date to give the expected queening date. Step 3 builds the window from the same anchor: the early edge is the low end of the published range unchanged, and the late edge is the high end plus (s − 1), where s is the number of days she had access to the tom. That widening follows from Merck's advice to breed repeatedly over two to three days — if the LH surge could have been triggered on any of s consecutive days, the latest possible birth moves out by s − 1 days while the earliest does not move at all. Step 4 places the two clinical milestones: the confirmation window at 21 to 30 days after breeding, taken directly from Merck and independent of which reference figure you chose; and the feeding step-up at 21 days before the expected queening date, from Merck's "25% more food during the last 3 weeks". Step 5 classifies today. The classification scalar is the gestation day — whole days elapsed since the first mating — used unrounded, which matters because every band edge is an integer day. The bands in order are: too early to confirm, confirmation window open, mid gestation, last three weeks, birth window open, and past the window. All arithmetic is anchored at UTC midnight so a daylight-saving change cannot move a date, and every numeric output is computed at 40 significant digits and rounded once at the return boundary.
A worked example.
A breeder puts a queen with a tom on 10 April 2026 and leaves them together for three days, as Merck recommends, then checks the plan on 20 May. On the clinical figure the calculator adds 65 days to the first mating and returns an expected queening date of Sunday, 14 June 2026. The birth window runs 2026-06-13 to 2026-06-17 — five days rather than three, because the late edge is pushed out by two days for the two extra mating days, any of which could have triggered the LH surge. Today is gestation day 40, so there are 25 days to go (40 + 25 = 65). The stage note reports mid gestation and points out that the 21–30 day confirmation window, which ran 2026-05-01 to 2026-05-10, has already closed — if the pregnancy was not confirmed then, an ultrasound now will still see the kittens, but the ideal moment has passed. The number to act on next is the feeding step-up on 2026-05-24, exactly 21 days before the expected birth, from which point she needs about a quarter more food than her pre-pregnancy ration. Had the breeder chosen the observed-colony figure instead, the same mating date would have returned 2026-06-16 with a window of 2026-06-11 to 2026-06-22 — two days later, and twelve dates wide instead of five, which is the honest size of the disagreement between a clinical manual and a measured colony.
