The reason a kicker's line deserves more than a single division is that field goal percentage on its own is a famously misleading number. It says nothing about distance. A kicker who attempts thirty kicks from inside 40 yards will post a far better percentage than one who is regularly sent out from beyond 50, and the second kicker may well be the better player. It also says nothing about volume: 90% on ten attempts and 90% on forty attempts are the same number describing very different seasons. That is why this calculator returns the raw miss count alongside the percentage, and why the points figure matters — points are what a kicker is actually paid to produce.

The point values are taken from the NFL rulebook rather than assumed. Rule 11, Section 1, Article 2 sets out the value of every scoring play: a touchdown is 6 points, a field goal is 3, a safety is 2, and a try after a touchdown is worth 1 point when scored by field goal or safety and 2 when scored by touchdown. So the placekicking points on this page are three times the field goals made plus one times the extra points made. Two-point conversions are excluded by construction — they are run or thrown, not kicked, and crediting them to a kicker would be wrong.

Extra points deserve their own field because they stopped being automatic in 2015, when the try-by-kick was moved back to a snap from the 15-yard line, turning what had been a near-certain 1 point into roughly a 33-yard field goal. A kicker who is 35 for 35 on extra points is doing something that would have been unremarkable a decade earlier and is genuinely notable now, and a kicker missing three or four a season is costing his team real points that his field goal percentage will not reveal.

One convention is worth stating plainly rather than hiding. If you enter zero extra point attempts — which is legitimate for a partial season, a single game, or a kicker used only on field goals — the extra point percentage is reported as 0, because dividing by zero has no answer. The summary line underneath spells out that no attempts were recorded, so the 0 cannot be misread as a kicker who missed everything. Field goal attempts have no such escape hatch: they are the page's primary denominator, so entering zero is rejected outright.

What is field goal percentage calculator (football kicking)?

Field goal percentage in American football is the share of a placekicker's field goal attempts that were successful: field goals made divided by field goals attempted, expressed as a percentage. Every try counts as an attempt, including kicks that are blocked and kicks that fall short, which is why the statistic is a joint measure of the kicker, the snapper, the holder and the protection unit rather than of the kicker alone. Extra point percentage is the same calculation applied to tries by kick after a touchdown. Since 2015 the NFL's extra point kick has been snapped from the 15-yard line, making it roughly a 33-yard attempt and turning a formerly automatic play into a real one — extra point percentages below 100 are now common and worth tracking. The points a kicker scores follow directly from the rulebook: three points per made field goal, one per made extra point. This calculator reports both percentages, the points, the points per kick attempt across both kick types, and the raw number of misses, because percentages alone systematically flatter kickers with short attempt profiles and low volume. What it deliberately does not do is adjust for distance, weather, altitude or surface, all of which move field goal accuracy substantially and none of which are recoverable from a made-and-attempted pair.

How to use this calculator.

  1. Enter field goals made and attempted. Include blocked attempts and short attempts in the attempted figure — they are attempts under the official statistics rules even though the kicker may not be at fault.
  2. Enter extra points made and attempted separately. Do not roll two-point conversions into either field; they are not kicks and this page will not count them.
  3. If the player has no extra point attempts in the sample you are measuring, leave both extra point fields at 0. The percentage will read 0 and the summary line will say that no attempts were recorded.
  4. Read the miss count alongside the percentage. Three misses is a different story at 44 attempts than at 12, and the percentage alone will not tell you which you are looking at.
  5. Use the points figure to compare kickers with different roles. A kicker on a high-scoring team gets many extra points and few long field goals; a kicker on a stalling offence gets the reverse. Points per kick attempt is the crude equaliser between those two jobs.
  6. For fantasy purposes, do not use the points figure from this page — fantasy leagues score kicks by distance. NFL.com's default awards 3 points for a field goal inside 50 yards, 5 from 50 or beyond, and 1 per extra point, so a fantasy total will exceed the real scoreboard total for any kicker with long makes.

The formula.

The two accuracy figures are straight divisions. Field goal percentage is made divided by attempted, times one hundred. Extra point percentage is the same calculation on the try-by-kick pair. Neither is weighted or adjusted in any way, which is exactly what makes them easy to compute and easy to over-read.

The points figure comes from the rulebook rather than from convention. NFL Rule 11 Section 1 Article 2 lists the value of each scoring play: touchdown 6, field goal 3, safety 2, and try after touchdown 1 point by field goal or safety, 2 points by touchdown. Placekicking points are therefore 3 × field goals made + 1 × extra points made. Two-point conversions are scored by running or throwing the ball into the end zone and are not attributed to the kicker.

Points per kick attempt divides the points total by every kick attempt of either type. It sits between 1 and 3 by construction: a kicker who attempts only extra points and makes them all reaches 1.0, and one who attempts only field goals and makes them all reaches 3.0. It is a rough way to compare kickers whose workloads are split differently between the two kinds of kick, and it should be read as a workload-mix indicator rather than a skill measure.

The miss count is field goal attempts minus makes, plus extra point attempts minus makes. It is included because it is the number that survives small samples. Percentages on ten attempts move by ten points per kick and are close to meaningless; the miss count is at least a fact.

One zero-denominator convention. Extra point attempts may legitimately be zero, so when they are, the extra point percentage is set to 0 rather than left undefined, and the summary line states in words that no attempts were recorded. Field goal attempts cannot be zero — a field goal percentage with no attempts is not a small number, it is not a number at all — so that case is rejected with an error rather than fudged.

What the arithmetic cannot do is adjust for distance, and no made-and-attempted pair ever can. Accuracy falls sharply with distance: an attempt from inside 30 yards and one from beyond 55 are different events being counted identically. Two kickers with the same percentage and very different attempt distributions are not equally accurate, and the only honest fix is to compare within distance bands using data this calculator does not take.

A worked example.

Example

Chris Boswell's 2024 season for Pittsburgh is a useful worked example because the league publishes the answer to part of it. He made 41 of 44 field goals and 35 of 35 extra points. Field goal percentage is 41 ÷ 44 = 0.93181..., or 93.2%. Extra point percentage is 35 ÷ 35 = 100.0%. His placekicking points are 3 × 41 = 123 from field goals plus 1 × 35 = 35 from extra points, giving 158 — and 158 is exactly the figure printed in the NFL Record & Fact Book's 2024 AFC individual scorers table, which is how the scoring logic on this page gets checked rather than merely asserted. Across both kinds of kick he attempted 44 + 35 = 79 placekicks for those 158 points, so 2.00 points per kick attempt, unusually high because his workload leaned towards field goals rather than extra points. His miss count was three, all of them field goals. Now consider how differently that reads from a kicker who went 12 of 13 for a 92.3% rate: almost the same percentage, one miss instead of three, and about a third of the points. The percentage is the headline, but the attempt volume and the points are what actually distinguish a season.

Is this the basketball field goal percentage?
No. This page is the American football placekicking statistic — field goals kicked through the uprights, worth three points each, plus extra points worth one. Basketball's field goal percentage counts made shots from the floor against attempts and has no extra point concept and no kicking. Do blocked field goals count as attempts?
Yes. Every try counts against the kicker's attempt total, whether it was blocked at the line, hooked wide, fell short or never got off cleanly because of a bad snap or hold. That is why field goal percentage is properly read as a unit statistic rather than a pure kicker statistic — the snapper, the holder and the protection all contribute to it. It is also why a kicker's percentage on the field is always lower than his accuracy in practice.
Why is my kicker's extra point percentage below 100?
Because the extra point stopped being a formality in 2015, when the NFL moved the try-by-kick snap back to the 15-yard line. That makes it roughly a 33-yard attempt rather than the roughly 20-yard chip shot it had been, and missed extra points became a normal part of a season rather than a curiosity. A kicker who goes perfect on 35 or more extra point attempts is doing something genuinely notable under the current rule, which was not true before 2015.
Why does my fantasy league show more points than this page?
Because fantasy kicker scoring is distance-weighted and real scoring is not. NFL.com's default fantasy settings award 3 points for a made field goal from inside 50 yards, 5 points from 50 or beyond, and 1 point per extra point. This page uses the actual rulebook values — 3 for any field goal regardless of distance, 1 for an extra point — so any kicker with makes from 50-plus will show a higher fantasy total than scoreboard total. What is a good field goal percentage?
In the modern NFL, a kicker who clears about 85% over a full season is doing well and one below about 75% is usually in trouble, but the number is close to meaningless without the attempt profile behind it. Accuracy drops sharply with distance, so a kicker at 88% who was rarely sent beyond 45 yards may be less accurate than one at 82% who was regularly asked for 50-plus. The honest comparison is within distance bands. Compare season to season within the same era too — kicking accuracy has improved substantially over the last three decades.
Can I use this for college or high school kickers?
The percentages, yes — made divided by attempted is the same everywhere. The points figure, mostly yes: the three-point field goal and the one-point kicked try are common to NFL, NCAA and NFHS rules, so the arithmetic carries over. The one thing that does not carry over is the extra point distance: the NFL's 15-yard-line snap is an NFL rule, and college and high school extra points are kicked from much closer, which makes a sub-100% extra point rate a stronger negative signal at those levels than in the NFL.
